Short version: Amazing store with amazing staff. Variety of different design«styles» to suit most people. Very large and helpful Annie Sloan paint selection. Offering classes to learn to use their chalk paint. Moderate prices. Will definitely be back multiple times. Long: I keep seeing awesome Pinterest crafts that use the Annie Sloan paint, so I figured it was time to give it a go. This is the only supplier in Northeast Iowa, so I figured I’d stop in. It’s located right off Main Street — though I wish it was easier to find parking here.(But that’s a main street problem and not a Fig and Frolic problem). The store is attached, via a door, to a card/décor store next door as well. The store itself is gorgeous! It’s pretty much this weird hybrid between an interior design store, a workspace area, and a paint area. They even have a small area with couches and design magazines that they welcome you to use to «draw inspiration» for your space! The entire space feels hipster and awesome. The store is relatively small, but they manage to keep it feeling relatively spacious. Most of the items/furniture on display are for sale, so if you like a piece, you can just buy it! If not, they do encourage you to draw inspiration from what they have going on. Fig and Frolic is weird in the design styles they have. It’s actually kinda awesome, and while I’m not sure it was intentional on their part, they end up having a wide variety of «styles» that would appeal to a lot of different people. They have some«upcycled» type of style things(a chandelier made of spoons) which is meh for me. But they also have lovely chalkboard things(love!), and brightly-colored modern furniture(love!). I’m glad they chose to go a route that has a decent amount of different styles rather than a LOT of one particular style. I could even some people who love the«rustic» look really getting along in here. I came here for the Annie Sloan chalk paint. In that manner, they do a beyond amazing job. They have paint swatches of all of the basic colors with the standard wax and darker wax. There are hand-outs about how to best use the chalk paint. They went above and beyond and have paint«recipes» with paint swatches for some of the non-standard colors you can get by mixing. They have brushes and wax brushes available for purchase as well. You can also purchase and look through Annie Sloan books. That being said, it seems like the entire chalk paint section was designed to have someone walk you through it, so do expect some interaction with an employee when you come. They do offer chalk paint classes here. They seem to be priced in the $ 80-ish range and provide the supplies you need. Check their website for their schedules, but it looks like they offer classes about twice a week. I plan on coming back and attending a couple. As far as prices, they’re relatively fair. Annie Sloan paint is oddly expensive anywhere you buy it, but it does cover a lot of furniture before needing more of it. The furniture and other décor is pretty reasonably priced. It’s priced like it was actually home-made(which most of it was!), but it’s not«luxury priced» either. Moderate pricing. The staff was INSANELY helpful here. Like I mentioned above, the chalk paint section was designed for help with staff. The employee walked me through how to use chalk paint, what steps were required, and she helped me choose what colors I wanted and what wax I wanted to use. She explained the different types of brushes, and she pretty much wanted to ensure I knew exactly what I was doing. Very, very helpful, and she seemed passionate about her job and the chalk paint.
