Sylvan Learning of Castro Valley

My boys have been going to Sylvan for about seven months now and I can see the change in their reading and writing skills. They love the instructors. I will recommend it to any one.

My son was struggling to learn how to read and showed no interest in trying. But in the last two months at sylvan, he is putting together word sounds and gaining confidence in his reading. I am very happy with the small changes I have seen and I expect that with Sylvans help continuing, he will continue to strive.

My son attended Sylvan for 3 years, and really enjoyed it. He went from an anxious child, to a very enthusiastic learner, and a voracious reader. Sylvan taught him not only math and English, but he learned how to love learning and gained confidence in his studies. He went from below grade level, to above grade level and is an honor student in high school. Thank you Sylvan for helping our son!
After my son completed with Sylvan, we decided to put our 6 year old daughter in Sylvan. She is still new to the program, but speaks very highly of it, and looks forward to her classes there. I feel that in the few weeks she’s been there, I have noticed a difference in her ability to grasp concepts in English and math.
Sometimes kids need that third party to help them in school. I am glad that we are a Sylvan family, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
The staff, teachers, and families are all so wonderful. I always feel welcome there, and they are always available to everyone. They are so helpful, and they go above and beyond to make sure you get what you need from Sylvan!

After reading the negative reviews here, I felt compelled to write a positive one. My daughter started at Sylvan, Castro Valley, 6 months ago, and we have had nothing but a positive experience. My only complaint is the price (or I would have given it 5 stars). Still, the money I spend is well worth it. My 6^th grade daughter has a completely new attitude about math. She loves her instructors at Sylvan and often exits the building in a far better mood than when she entered it. No more struggles and battles at home with math homework. She feels confident and competent.

What a joke. NEVER send your child here. The administrators are absolutely inept, and is ridiculously overpriced (especially for what they pay their great teachers). It may be a bit more expensive, however, pay the extra money for a private tutor. You will not regret it.

My son was having troubles in kindergarten with reading, so as a concerned parent, I enrolled him in Sylvan. The advertising of one-​on-​one help really got me. I relentlessly tried at home to help him advance his skills, but I needed an outside source of help.
I brought him here and they immediately test him to check his level of skills and come back with a game plan and recommendation. Well, let’s just say it ISN’T cheap… but, I am willing to pay whatever to help with my child’s education… and if that is taking out a second mortgage on my house, so be it!
We took our son three days a week for an hour each day and he really did not like it at all. The hour goes by really quickly and it takes about 10 minutes at least to settle in and get started from the day before. The ONLY thing he looked forward to were the prizes or points the instructor gave for paying attention… he was focused pretty much every minute on how many points he could put in his checkbook to buy a prize. I do appreciate incentives to get children to pay attention, but, seriously I felt like I took out a second mortgage for him to buy a robot calculator after 4 months of this…(about $ 5000.)…
He eventually learned how to read and it wasn’t from the help of Sylvan Learning Center, it was because he was READY to do it on his own. Maybe this place is better for older children… i dunno, but i got a BIG learning lesson myself!
