I’m being generous with my Stars today, as it’s the Holiday Season and hard working independent businesses don’t need folks like me to give them a hard time, unless they deserve it. I wandered in today, as we were already in the same shopping area for a Target and Home Depot Run. I needed to restock my Mother-In-Law’s refrigerator with at least passable white wine, and we preferred to be heading home than traveling any further down US395 towards Carson. Valley Liquors is on a far lonely end of this commercial strip and they looked like they could use the business. It was a windy day and after forcing the front door open, I headed past the tobacco counter and straight to the refrigerated case. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but only bottles of Andre sparkling wine and Sutter Home or basic Beringer Chardonnay available either far or near. I was underwhelmed and disappointed, although I’ll readily admit to regular wine purchases at Grocery Outlet at $ 4 or less per bottle. Maybe it’s the bad memories of Sutter Home White Zin or thinking that there could easily be a bottle of MD20 – 20(aka Mad Dog) just around the store corner that forced me off my cheap wine game. Actually the Sutter Home Chardonnay isn’t half bad. However, I hope that Valley Liquor upgrades the wine selection in the future. May I suggest a large bottle of Woodbridge(aka Grampa Wine) as a good start?

An oasis in an otherwise unbroken sea of big box chain stores. Every once in a while, I’m forced to leave Tahoe, and go down into the valley to shop at one or six of the big box stores in Carson City. I don’t know about you, but the whole experience of a full day of this gives me a headache, and in need of(ahem) refreshments. Enter Valley Liquor & Smoke Shop. Tucked away in a small strip near Home Depot, it’s unexpectedly like a friendly local cornerstore. It’s got everything you need to recharge, and the owner is super nice and welcoming. A nice way to end my spree before I head back up the hill…
