A locals hangout: No visit to Carmi to visit my Dad is complete without at least one visit to The Coffee Shop on West Main across from Montgomery Circle. The prices are shockingly low(my California husband can’t believe the prices aren’t ten dollars higher) and the fried chicken is second best only to my Mom’s, and I haven’t had that for over thirty years! Look for daily(blue plate) specials that may include catfish, pork tenderloin, fried chicken, meat loaf and other comfort foods, with a side of potatoes or rice and green vegetables. Top it off with sweet tea to wash it all down and save room for a piece of the best coconut cream pie that you’ve ever tasted. You’ll feel right at home with the great service, too.

Ok kids, pay attention. When in small-town, southern Illinois, eat comfort food! :) That’s what ‘the coffee shop’ is all about. I love going to visit my dad, because I can always count on at least one meal from this great kitchen and the friendly and familiar staff. I’m lovin’ me some fried chicken and of course the swiss steak is to die for. Throw in some mashed potatoes and maybe some green beans or any of the other dozen plus side dish options and a nice soft roll along with a glass of sweet tea, and it’s just a feel good meal. Big thanks to all the crew at the coffee shop for being so good to my dad and big props from a restaurant girl. There are a heck of a lot of ‘prissy’ restaurants that would do well to take a page from your book when it comes to tasty food and sincere service! See you next time I head south!
