This nursery sells inferior plants. And, the staff from the owner to the counter help could really use lessons on customer service. We special ordered a tree ($ 450 plus delivery charges), that has never done well. I was wondering whether the supplier might have a replacement policy if we were sold a diseased tree. I was told: «There’s no way that we are going to take the tree back.» or offer any help. They offered no answer as to the disease I described (just a general «it could be anything»).
I don’t think that they know anything about plants and the staff is less than helpful. We went to Grigg’s (down the road) and got immediate help. And, no, I did not berate the other nursery to get it. Grigg’s is just far more knowledgeable and much more helpful and informative. I will never buy anything from Valley Hills again; and, we have purchased a lot from them in the past. I have instructed my landscaper to do the same. Go to Grigg’s.

I think this place is beautiful. They have such a great selection and wonderful lot. I ended up buying more than I expected because I couldnt pass up on some of the rare plants I found. The customer service was great since they answered every question I had and helped me make a selection.

Carmel Valley, CA
Each nursery has it’s own goodness. They are a little different and worth visiting and they are only 4 minutes apart on the same road. They have a lot of the same inventory and also different with lots of selections. The owners are both charismatic personalities. Valley Hills gets 4 stars as the owner has not always been on site. He seems to be there more now. As for plants and their care, I read the directions. It works for me. There are a lot of plants to know. The internet has always been a terrific library to go to as well. The ambiance for Valley Hills and Griggs (5 stars) I find them peaceful and pleasant.
As for the review by Lisa B. it presents as «‘young» and also has a defamatory style to it. I suggest Lisa B. re-​review the nursery.

Nice selection, service questionable. On my last two visits I received advice that turned out to be totally wrong (which I discovered the hard way, then researched on the internet, and at another nursery, at which the staff laughed at the advice I received at Valley Hills). The staff overall is friendly and helpful, but not well educated about plants, and usually refer me to the manager (owner?). It’s this gentleman who has given me incorrect advice, I think because he was looking to sell me some more snake oil. I’d look elsewhere unless you just like to shop and don’t have any specific questions or problems. Griggs up the street has a comparable selection, and their staff bends over backwards for you, even if you’re only purchasing one small plant. I heart Griggs!

Still the best selection. I was in there in the end of November and found colorful bedding plants and bareroot berries ready for planting. No one else had that sort of stock!
