Every time I visit the Weston Gallery over the years I encounter high quality and expensive photographs and a snooty staff that isn’t helpful or particularly interested in whether you buy anything. This was the case again on Dec. 29th when my wife and I stopped by. A young guy behind the counter demonstrated no interest in us or our questions but seemed very interested in continuing to peck away at his computer. We walked out after several minutes of this and headed to Carol Williams’ Photographic West several blocks away where they were friendly, interested and helpful.

I had to call Weston Gallery a few months ago with some questions relating to my day job, so I was excited to be able to stop in and check it out for myself. When I happened by, it was a busy day and the staff was actually pulling some work off the walls to prepare for shipping to another venue for a loan. That was a little weird/unorthodox seeming to me, but I figured I caught them at a bad time… and because they seemed so crazed I didn’t take the second to introduce myself and thank the fellow I’d spoke with(still a regret, although probably the right choice, given how busy!). Anyhow, it’s a very nice, small gallery with two spaces — one highlighting the Westons & co., and one showing temporary shows by other artists they represent. I thought that the gallery was thoughtfully laid out and the works were quite nice. They had some books and posters for sale besides the high-end photography, and also had flatfiles of other work on hand, but since different galleries have different policies on handling flatfiles, I didn’t want to overstep and peruse. Perhaps on a quieter day… Bottom line: very glad I went, very much worth the drive from Monterey, and very sorry that they are so wonderful that they’re quite busy during business hours!

Very impressed with this small, intimate gallery. As a lifelong professional photographer who works 80% of the time with B&W Film I was amazed that the selection of gallery displayed prints here rivaled the best exhibitions i have seen in recent years. Particularly the Yousef Karsh exhibit – you have no idea what a master he was until you get to see some of his large prints in the flesh. They also had one Ralph Gibson up and a host of Ansel Adams etc… If you are interested in looking at some great, unique, photographic books they have quite a special selection – and if you have the money – I seriously recommend looking here to purchase some prints for your home…

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a nice area, but definitely a bit stuffy shall we say. I like the funk. Ya know? I mean… we want the funk. How ’bout that funk? So there aren’t really a lot of interesting places that totally piqued my interest here. This was an exception. In the market for an original Ansel Adams print? They’ve got it. They also have many other prints and books that are visually stunning and artistically moving. If you are in the area for whatever reason, this is a must see if you are a lover of art or photography. It’s about as good as checking out a museum. And if you are so inclined, and funded, you can buy whatever you want.
