Located inside the stunning Point Lobos State Reserve at Whaler’s Cove, the Whaler’s Cabin Museum(WCM) is a neat little slice of history. Built sometime in 1851 by Chinese Fisherman as one of their residences, the WCM is the oldest wood-frame building in Monterey County. Amazingly, this building has survived the many incarnations of this area that included everything from Whaling, Abalone cannery, Dairy Farming, Vegetable Farming, Coal Mining, Gravel Quarry, Sand Mining, and it even served as the headquarters for the US Army Coastal Defense Squad just after Pearl Harbor. The WCM’s current purpose is an information station for Point Lobos visitors, and it also houses an impressive array of artifacts that pays tribute to all of this areas previous manifestations. I won’t get into everything because it’s far too much, and it really needs to be experienced anyway. However, I will mention that their Whaling exhibit is pretty amazing. There’s a whole graveyard on the side of the building of Whale bones, and there’s a whole section of the house dedicated to the weaponry and various tools used while whaling. It’s pretty impressive, and not to be missed if you’re at the WCM. The WCM really is the cherry on top of your visit to Point Lobos. While it’s not quite«must see» territory as a whole, it is definitely worth the 20 – 30 minutes you’ll spend inside. Highly recommended.
