Faction

I really love this place. Nick is super cool and has created a place where you can feel comfortable in your training. Good facility, REALLY great instructors and lots of options for different classes. Top of my list of Martial Arts gyms.

Started training at Faction (now Gracie Carlsbad) about 1.5 years ago. Initially I was reluctant given the reputations of other BJJ/​MMA/​Muay Thai gyms in the area, but I’m glad I gave Faction a chance. Nick Stefan is an incredible instructor and well respected in the BJJ community. His instruction is very technical and he does a fantastic job at creating a welcoming, yet challenging training environment. He’s also an all around cool guy. Same goes for everyone that trains there.
In terms of BJJ, there are many different belt levels who train at Faction. White to black (I’ve seen other gyms where it’s predominantly white and blue). I feel having the chance to train with people of different skill levels has really helped me improve during my short time training. I primarily train for fitness, self-​defense, and fun, but I enjoy having the chance to train with those who like to compete and have much more experience than myself. Everyone there is more than willing to answer questions about technique when you’re sparring, which is extremely helpful.
The Muay Thai is equally as enjoyable/​valuable. Andy Scott is a great instructor and his classes are awesome. Fun, challenging, and he takes the time to give each person his individual attention to correct their stance and form. He definitely knows what he’s doing.
I’ve been training both BJJ and Muay Thai at Faction/​Gracie Carlsbad and couldn’t be happier. I have since moved from Oceanside to downtown for my job and although there are many MMA gyms close to me, I still prefer to drive all the way to Carlsbad to train with Nick.
