Don’t let the lack of reviews deter you, Poor Richard’s Inn has many more reviews on the web from places like Trip Advisor that mirror the great reviews they’re starting to build up on Unilocal.I almost want to not write them a review because I want to keep this place a secret but it’s too good a place not to write about. One of the most concentrated streets of what Cape May is known for, Victorian style B&B’s, is Jackson Street. Right inbetween the two most popular destinations in Cape May, the beach and Washington Street(a pedestrian only road full of shops, restaurants, and more) is Poor Richard’s, a landmarked building with absolutely everything you could want. Both the owner, Harriet, and the Inn Keeper, June were amazing warm hearted ladies. Our room(#5) was incredibly comfortable, spacious, and had charming unique furniture that fit the space perfectly. The room had it’s own bathroom(which is not always the case with B&B’s), mini fridge, and TV with DVD player(though the TV was super small). In addition to the Queen bed there was also a twin bed in the room. Right next to our room(on the second floor) was a shared balcony with a couple tables and four chairs overlooked Jackson St. This was a great place to bring breakfast in the morning or to have a drink at night. Breakfast varies a bit everyday but is typically a hot egg based dish, fruit, juice, coffee, toast, and some sort of baked good. The first morning we were there it was a delicious frittata and the blueberry jam they had for the toast was definitely home made, it was wonderful. There is a couple of adorable cats on premises that were as calm as could be. Another benefit is that they have chairs, umbrellas, and beach blankets for you to use. The only complaint I would have is that the umbrellas aren’t very good(can not handle any amount of wind) but there are excellent umbrellas for rent on the beach(currently $ 12/day) if you need one. Lastly it’s worth noting that the prices of Poor Richards are extremely reasonable, one of the best priced Inns of this type in all of Cape May. Prices are posted on their website and unlike regular hotels were you may find sales and specials on travel sites, you don’t have to worry about haggling or finding a better prices elsewhere because it is what it is(there is on and off season rates though). I carefully chose Poor Richard’s as the place I would bring my girlfriend for the weekend in order to propose to her(which I did near the Cape May lighthouse). So Poor Richard’s will always have a very special place in our hearts and memories and I can’t wait to come back.

Loved it! Great location, beautiful home, nice people! Now for the full description– My husband wanted to stay at a hotel in town, that was like a resort. We stay at resorts all the time in other places we travel to, but since Cape May is a quaint town with Victorian homes, I said no, let’s do a B&B. I wanted to be close to the beach, and close to the Main Street. The location was ideal. I looked at 3 other ones in the same neighborhood, then found Poor Richard’s, which was $ 100 cheaper per night. I tried to figure out why and really couldn’t, so I read reviews where people complained about a small breakfast and an old house. The old house to me was kind of a «duh» moment, but I guess not so «duh» to the average person who doesn’t know what Victorian means. Now for my review: When I called, the owner was not overly friendly, and I got a little nervous about our stay. After leaving a deposit, she mailed us a cute brochure with things to do, and general info. I thought that was a nice touch. When we arrived, everything was perfect. She welcomed us, helped us carry our bags up to room 6– the 3rd floor, and spent 30 minutes answering all our questions and giving us suggestions on things to do, where to eat, etc. The room– Lovely. biggest room I’ve stayed in at a B&B. We had a queen size bed, a small bed by the window, and a claw foot tub– loved it! Also, a flat screen TV. The bathroom was cute too. All private. I have attached pics of our room– the mess you see is mine, not theirs LOL The location– Half a block from the beach, about a block and a half from a ton of shops and restaurants. Mad batter(great breakfast place) is right next door. The innkeepers– Harriett, the owner, is so helpful! She gave us recommendations, menus, covered all our bases– She even offers beach towels and chairs at no cost. It was very nice to not have to think of bringing these things. Solomon, an assistant, was helpful with our bags, our questions, and very friendly. Craig, was very friendly as well and helped us get settled. The maid was also very nice. The thing here is that she doesn’t want guests to stay here who won’t be happy. If you are looking for hot tubs, saunas, massages, or 5 star pampering, this isn’t for you. Breakfast– she advertises continental which is breads, bagels, juice, and coffee. She also has assorted fruits– pineapple, watermelon, etc, and she makes a baked dish per day. Day 1 we had a delicious egg frittata with mushroom, onion, and tomato, and day 2 we had a french toast casserole. We served ourselves, so you can take as much or little as you want. Perks– LOCATION! Free parking a few blocks away– about a 6 minute walk. Use of beach chairs and towels. All in all, I would recommend this to all my friends. We had a great time, and definitely picked the right place to stay!
