Magic Smokes

First off the shop was locked up during business hours. I called, nothing, then I notice the Hair shop next door is connected, sure enough the person running the smoke shop was in there.
She opens up… I ask for a carton of smokes «we don’t sell carton» (literal, no pluralization error on my end)
I ask «I’ll just take a pack then»
So I proceed to use apple pay at the terminal…
Lady «one dollar for credit, use debit»
I ask her to cancel, she tells me to cancel. She finally realized she has to cancel.
I press debit and proceed, she say «debit 1.50»
I just walk out
Bad enough that they make customers responsible for their merchant fees, she was literally making up prices on the fly.
Go somewhere else that will value your business.

Had a pretty lame experience there yesterday.
It’s Valentine’s Day, my boyfriend and I are on our way to a Hookah Lounge, and we decide to stop at a random smoke shop to buy a couple packs of cigarettes to last us the weekend.
We walk in and are «greeted» by an older Persian woman talking loudly in Farsi on the phone. I’m Persian, so I could understand that she was speaking to a friend, gossiping, on the house-​phone that clearly belonged to the store.
As an employee she had two options:
1. Say hello, and then let my boyfriend and I look around in peace while she goes to the back or stands a bit further away from us and continues her conversation.
2. Get off the phone with her friend, and actually assist us and help us find what we were looking for.
But she decided to go with option number 3. Talking loudly and laughing and babbling away while following us around the store. Right next to us. No space given whatsoever. Look, lady, we’re not criminals, we’re browsing. Everything was kept behind glass and locked up or far behind the counter, out of our reach. We’re not stealing your shit. Calm down.
So we decide on trying a new pack of American Spirits. We both smoke only menthol, and asked her which pack was the menthol pack.
Continuing her phone conversation, she grabbed a pack and told us that was menthol. We said okay, and bought that pack as well as a pack of Marlboro Smooth’s. For both, the total came to $ 12.95, pretty average price for 2 packs of cigarettes.
We step outside, open up the American Spirits, and take a whiff. They DEFINITELY did not contain menthol.
We walk back in and I tell her to get off the phone, we needed to return them. She told us she couldn’t take them back because we had opened them. I told her maybe if she was helping us properly, she wouldn’t have sold us the wrong pack. She started to yell and told us there’s nothing she could do, we already opened it. I told her we didn’t smoke any and we were still standing right outside the door, opened the box, smelled the awful non-​menthol cigarettes, and walked straight back in.
If she was at least apologetic, I wouldn’t mind too much. But the fact that she was yelling at us as if WE did something wrong was very uncalled for. I asked when the manager would be in and she said not until later that night, at 9pm. I called today to complain, but unfortunately, they had closed right before I called.
She’s getting paid to talk on the phone, yell at customers if they complain, ignore customers but pay full attention and giggle away to her friends, and give false information about what she’s selling us.
Maybe the store itself is okay, but the customer service is definitely awful. So far, every place I’ve been to with the name «Magic» in it has been disappointing. I’m making sure to call the store again when they’re open.

Hookah tobacco and charcoals are not fresh and prices are higher than nearby tobacco shops.
Had to go to buy the good stuff somewhere else…

This location is convenient and has a good selection of standard items, but the Woodland Hills location is obviously more expansive.
The reason i do not prefer this location is the vibe: the lady that usually attends the store during daytime seems extremely impersonal, almost reluctant to serve me.
It would be PERFECT if the lovely gentleman that usually works the night shift could share some of his joviality and helpfulness with her!
(If there is a language or other barrier, i understand and hope she is able to get past them speedily! :-])

Great experience, the owner Magic is the sweetest guy! Super helpful & knowledgeable. Prices are on point. Will be back soon!
