Been here several times now for a Christmas Bazaar. Love the old buildings, gives the place character. Parking is easy and close.

I’ve gone every year since I was five either as a spectator or a competitor of FFA sheep. It’s great fun if you like rides and food. I love going watching the 4-H Fashion Revue and checking out the animals. Sometimes there’s a good selection of music and entertainment but it’s really up to personal taste. The past few years however I have been noticing that there really isn’t anything new except for a few vendors and artists, but as long as I’m town during August I’ll take a day to have some fun at the county fair.

We had a swell time at the fair, but this one is definitely on the small side. Our family highlights were the K-9 Air Show, juggling act and the Pioneer Village where most of the vendors were in period costume. And that part of the fair is in a shady grove, which is a perk on a hot summer day. You always feel gouged by ticket prices at the carnival and all the basic rides were there and functioning. It still seemed pretty sparse and there wasn’t much to entertain older kids. Of course, my boys were most interested in the crossbow game, which is a good way to go through your tickets fast. Food was decent, by fair standards, with lots of local vendors. Once we paid the general admission, our focus was on the free activities inside. There are multiple barns with large and small animals exhibited by the regional 4-H clubs. Good summer activity with the kids, especially if you can take advantage of some of the promotions to lower your admission costs, etc. Check the website for the daily calendar and deals. There is a rodeo and demolition derby taking place at the fairgrounds, but there is an additional admission charge for both events.

Oh man, get thee to the Clackamas County Fair. At first Mr. T and I thought this was kind of a shakedown; you have to pay $ 5 for parking and $ 7 just to get in the door. Then you have to pay separately for things like the rodeo and rides. But we found out there was plenty of fee-free fun inside. We started off getting our fix of fried carnival food first, including apple-pie fries and pigs ears. Next we hit up the 4H livestock exhibits. All I can say is, wow. Punk rock chickens, crazy-eyed goats, giant pigs and tiny piglets, you name it. I never imagined there were so many varieties of chickens. Seeing the piglets suckle was a highlight, not in a weird way or anything. And speaking of weird, pigs have strangely human-like butts. Anyway, next we stumbled upon the adult talent show, and our only regret is that we didn’t find it sooner! The final acts are on Saturday evening, it would be great to see. Winners go to the state fair in Salem. Fair goes through Saturday; get there!
