I’m sad to discover that Michi Restaurant has closed its doors. :-(That said, Michi Catering is alive and well! This was probably the freshest, most creative, and most expensive sushi I’ve ever eaten. I absolutely loved it here, everyone treated you like family. It was a small building, so sometimes you could be waiting or even feel cramped, but the tasty goodness that awaits was always worth it. The owner, Mr. Shin, would always come around to tables and toast wine with his guests. Sometimes he would send out a special plate made just for you. I’d also like to comment about the pricing. Michi has been around for a very long time, and for as long as I can remember it was a high priced establishment. Compared to most sushi places I frequent, the quantity and quality is almost always better. The sashimi in the restaurant(I cannot speak to those reviewing Mtn Winery) is meaty and very fresh tasting. Were there things that seemed a little high? Sure. Astronomically? No. The experience of chatting with the owner usually made up for the extra cost.

I will never eat here again. Unfortunately I got really bad food poisoning after eating here & ended up in the ER. I know for sure it was from here bc it was the last thing I ate that made me sick. It was a few years back & will definitely never go back. I really hope they are more careful now with food prep. & cross contamination . Aside from that the food is over priced & not that good. Much better food in japantown. Some great places there.

If you must go here, try the Alex Smith roll. Sushi rolls were decent but a bit on the pricier side. Service was good and attentive. Probably won’t be back though; due to the roaches I spotted on the window sill…

Brutally overpriced, with indifferent(but polite) service. Skip it and go to TGI Sushi, the quality is the same or better at half the price.

Michi’s prides itself with its overwhelming number of choices for sushi rolls. They use nontraditional ingredients to create culinary delights. With names of the rolls like Harvey Davidson, Sexy Atlantic Delight and Dynamite Roll they conjure up images of artistic creativity. The sake is good either hot or cold. They have a selection of beers and you need to try the plum wine. Atmoshpere is lively and animated.

I’ve been going here on and off for many years. My favorite sushi Chef used to work here and we would go all the time for drinks and food. Recently they had a certificate on LivingSocial that I purchased and decided to try again after a bad experience the last time. I could not believe the prices they were charging for basic sushi rolls! There were also known for this freshest sushi and two of the four rolls I felt didn’t have freshest of flavors. There are many other places in the bay that have a lot better tasting sushi for a fraction of the price. The service was also dismal! They changed servers on us three different times after the people next to me sat 10 minutes after but ate 20 minutes before we did and it looked like we ordered around the same type of items. Now the reason I would love to give this place a negative star review… Is very rare that I see people being caddy and talking crap about somebody but when I saw the waitresses and bartenders making remarks about my fiancé, I almost went explosive. To the point when I got my bill I walked up to pay and asked all three of them if there was an issue or if I can help them with anything. They knew they had been caught and I just felt that it was most unprofessional service I’ve ever had any restaurant I have ever been to. Back in the day, the owner would walk around and make sure everybody was doing well. Now the prices have doubled and I just feel that over the years this place has lost its soul!

Wow, what a disappointment. The BF and I were lured into Michi via LivingSocial, although I can’t imagine why they offered a deal considering how busy the restaurant is. Let me warn you, Michi gets ridiculously crowded on weekend nights. Unfortunately, the front desk staff doesn’t seem competent at handling reservations and the crowds. They take ‘some’ reservations and leave ‘some’ tables ‘open’ but this doesn’t mean much. Definitely doesn’t work in anyone’s favor. Staff is all over the place while patrons are annoyed and stacking up by the minute. Make a res if they let you, and if you come a minute later than 4:49 on a Saturday night without a table booked, be prepared to wait. Food: As many other have said, sushi prices are OUTRAGEOUS. $ 25 for an 8pc roll. No thank you. Ordered the Hawaiian Poke and was seriously disappointed. The poke was drenched in hot sauce(Michi’s ‘special sauce’ on the menu) and was served a top rice and«vegetables»(lettuce). It was Impossible to taste the fish with all that hot sauce and the presentation of the poke was very poor. Basically chopped up like chum. Not worth $ 22. The only highlight of our meal was the miso soup and appetizer salad. Really not sue what the allure is here. Tip: acoustics are terrible in the restaurant, so you might want to look elsewhere if you want a quiet night or decent conversation.

I remember coming here couple of years ago. That was our first and last time we have gone since today’s lunch. I remembered the food being super expensive but pretty good. Good presentation and quality. The service was also good despite us having a baby with us. It was kind of crowded that night, but I think we caught the tail end of the dinner rush that night. We returned on Sunday night with our living social voucher. Apparently, everyone in Santa Clara county was there with their voucher. We would have had to wait nearly two hours. With two little kids, there was no way we were going to wait. So since it expired on tues, I planned it out better and decided to call for a reservation yesterday. It is closed on Mondays, but someone did answer and told me that reservations were full for lunch and dinner. I decided to call right when it opened for takeout so that I can use my voucher. It was a good thing I did. When I went to the restaurant to pick up, it was just like Sunday night. Nightmare of wait! It took awhile for someone to help me get my food. Even though it was sitting in the front, the manager was going crazy with crowd control. What I really should have done was check the food before I left. This was one dumb mistake I made. When I got home, I only had a gyoza seafood soup and not nobemono as I have ordered. I specifically asked and repeated over 3 times with the person on the phone. I don’t know Japanese, but i just went with what was on the menu. I asked him if it came with the fuko-something that is pickled vegetables. Nope. I didn’t get them even though I specifically asked for it. Fukomono? Anyhow, I read off the menu for the order, and he still got it wrong. I opened up my mango salmon salad, and lo and behold — a new type of salad dressing. HONEY! They packed honey as my dressing. That’s it. No acid component with the sweet. Obviously a mistake. I ate my salad sans dressing. My husband got his kalbi. He said the meat was quite puny for the amount we paid! With that amount, it should have been grassfed beef. As a compensation, we got a butt load of rice. I don’t get it. Oh, we usually eat low carb. I am probably not going to drive 25 mins again to eat here again. Parking sucked(parked at some neighborhood who probably didn’t want me there). Crowd sucked. Oh, and I didn’t appreciate a waiter muttering under his breath that we all waited until the last minute to use our voucher. Yes, I know that. We suck, too. I didn’t realize my husband had this voucher, okay? It takes 2 freeways for me to get here so it was easily forgotten. But the attitude of the worker stinks. He can say that in front of the guests since we are not sitting at his table. Anyhow, i don’t want to return here. My husband who grew up in San Jose liked this place. But this experience really turned me off. Giving it two stars in remembrance of our first time here.

They’ve taken a turn for the worse and it’s not a place I want to go to anymore. Being here before, I knew how expensive it was and I wanted to give it another shot with the livingsocial deal they had. They need a better front of the house experience. It stinks. I went in on a Friday evening and there was a girl there who said hello and we’ll be with you in just a minute. That minute was over 10 minutes with multiple staff walking by and seeing my wife and I just stand there. Finally, one of the servers starts the conversation. Server — How many people? Me — Two Server — Do you have a reservation? Me — No Server — Sorry, we’re booked full for the night. You can call in next time for a reservation. I don’t have a problem with the place being full and they can’t take any more people, but why did they have to make me wait 10 minutes just to tell me this? If they knew they were full, the girl should have been able to tell me this right off the bat. Fast forward to yesterday when the coupon expires and I ran over there during lunch to use my coupon with every other bargain hunter. The restaurant was totally unable to handle the influx of orders. I put in my order and the ticket is expedited at 12:18PM. I know this because I saw the ticket. I didn’t get my two sushi rolls until 1:00PM. I even got my order in before there was a rush of people. I saw one lady walk in with a phone order and they didn’t work on her food until she paid and complained where the food is. The house manager had to basically go to the back and tell the staff he needed X, Y, Z for this lady. Turns out they lost that order. One other lady was eating in, but her food was also lost. How did I know this? The manager said sorry, and they’re working on the rolls right now. She had to ask for it to-go because it wasn’t ready yet. When I left, she was still waiting! One of the staff walks up and asks some of the people waiting if they wanted some water or if they’ve been helped yet.(She was just coming on shift and the lone bright spot of this experience). I let her know it’s been about 45 minutes and I haven’t gotten my to-go order yet. She looks shocked and goes to the back to find out what is going on. She comes out with a server and he asks what I ordered. With their million rolls, I couldn’t recall both names. I just remember the Jeff Garcia and some other roll. They run back again and magically my food is there ready. So in about an hour, they lost at least 3 orders. Maybe more for the people dining in. It got so busy, that the owner had to go to the back and work at the sushi bar himself. TL;DR? front of the house needs a lot of work. You’ll spend forever waiting for decent, overpriced sushi rolls that all taste the same because of the amount of sauce and macadamia nuts they put on them.

This place is a complete rip off! Everything here is double the price or more. I can understand having expensive rolls, but everything is overpriced and undersized for unimpressive looking sushi. They have no reason to have rolls ranging from $ 20 – 30 when they look exactly or worse than any other sushi place. The cheapest roll was the California rolls for $ 6. It really was a clump of imitation crab and avocado(one of the worst I’ve ever seen). A mushroom roll is $ 11. If you want anything that remotely has any fresh fish or seafood, you are looking at a minimum of $ 20. I looked around the restaurant and every table looked empty and for good reason. Their rolls we so small and unattractive. How can anyone afford this place? The restaurant surroundings and inside décor isn’t nice enough to be paying these kind of prices. I ordered a chicken teriyaki don bowl for $ 20 because I know at least the white rice would make me full. The bowl had a thin layer of chicken, some mushrooms and seaweed on top. It was okay, but it was definitely not worth the price. They just packed in the rice and masked the top with teriyaki sauce. Well, a bowl of white rice is $ 2, so I guess I might be getting a deal here. All I know is, my entire party could not understand the prices here. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. The only positive with this place was the waiter was nice and friendly. If they keep up this, this restaurant will close. I read many reviews say they keep increasing their prices. Stay away from this place! It is a complete SCAM! Save your money and eat anywhere else!

It’s a baby-unfriendly restaurant. My sister, brother-in-law, their baby daughter(4-month old), and I went to Michi to have dinner tonight. I waited for around 40 minutes. When we had the seat, my sister and brother-in-law took the baby from the car to the restaurant. My niece was immediately scared by the noisy environment and cried heavily. The restaurant was very noisy. The music and the sound that people made were loud. I was not able to hear what my sister said clearly. I was surprised that the restaurant was so noisy because the price is considered high. We tried to calm my niece down. But she was so uncomfortable. She stopped crying when I used my fingers to block my niece’s ears. When the food came, the waiter asked us to take the baby out. It was difficult for us to do this. Thus, we chose to take the food out and went home. Although the waiter apologized, I felt very uncomfortable. The waiter explained that he received a lot of complaints. We have taken my niece out to restaurants several times. She has never been scared like this. She cried because of the noise. Her sound was not loud in this restaurant. I took her to a Vietnamese restaurant last weekend. It was crowded but not that noisy. She cried for a while. Her sound was loud in that restaurant because it was not noisy. But the waiter and people surrounded were very friendly. The reason why I felt uncomfortable is that it was the environment that scared my niece. Somehow she was blamed to make the noise in that noisy environment. She has never been cried so heavily in other restaurants. When we went out the restaurant, she immediately stopped crying. For the food, I think it’s ok based on its price, the quality of ingredients, the taste, and the portion. We ordered Caterpillar Roll($ 19), Embers of Flame(spicy soup noodle, I remembered it’s $ 16), and Katsu Don($ 24).

I’ve been coming to Michi’s for years and love this place, but the price tag keeps increasing that I don’t find it worth coming anymore. The only reason I would come is if I had a Groupon or Livingsocial deal and luckily I had one so Michi I went. The food here is always great and they are known for their speciality rolls made the Michi way. My go to roll everytime I go is the RSM Unlimited roll, now called the MSM Unlimited roll and the roll never disappoints. Overall, 4 stars because of their price tag. I think it is just way overpriced and dislike that they are constantly increasing their prices!

I bought a couple of Living Social vouchers thinking it was a great deal. I was immediately turned off by the long list of rolls they have on the menu. Many might think that’s a good thing, but for somebody who’s never been there before it might take a while to scheme through and digest the menu list. It doesn’t help either that the server asked a few mins after we sat down if we were ready to order… that’s after we told her it was our first time. The food is not bad, but it isn’t great. The green tea was not hot and it didn’t have the usual tea with toasted brown rice taste that u get from a sushi place. So why the 2 stars? PRICES! OVERPRICED for that matter. I understand sushi joints tend to be on the pricey side but $ 26 for an order of 8 rolls? That’s outrageous! Almost $ 70 for 3 rolls… don’t think I’m willing to do that again even with LS voucher.

Wow, this place is quite expensive for being a non-michelin star restaurant. Most rolls are in the $ 20-$ 30 range. Someone said it right when they said that something must be up if there are more non-asians in the restaurant than asians. We came here for dinner last night and luckily we had called ahead to reserve a table because as we were waiting for our table to be ready, the guy up front told someone on the phone that the wait was 55 – 60 minutes. A couple walked in and then walked out after they heard the wait. We started off with four rolls, the 49er roll, the rock n roll, a salmon skin roll and a mushroom roll. It took at least 30 minutes before we got our rolls. The owner even dropped by our table to give us a bowl of complimentary edamame because our rolls were taking so long. The standouts were definitely the 49er and mushroom rolls. But alas, four rolls was not enough to satisfy the appetites of four people, so we ordered two more rolls. The ebay roll and the white cherry blossom roll. Again our rolls took an extraordinary amount of time. Our server even gave us another complimentary bowl of edamame. At this point we had been in the restaurant for about an hour and a half, but somehow it felt longer than that. At about two hours into our meal, not wanting to turn this into a three hour long affair, my cousin asked our server to check on our rolls and to cancel them if they have not been started. Our server quickly came back with our white cherry blossom roll, which was gobbled up in a matter of seconds. Five rolls, a bottle of sake and more than two hours later we were lucky to get out of there for about $ 25 a person considering how expensive this place is. The service is quite slow, and it didn’t help that our table was in the corner of the back room, which made it even harder for us to get someone’s attention. So unless you are a guy trying to impress a date, I would suggest skipping this place.

Ok, Michi is still good sushi but it’s dropped in my ranking because of too many changes. Most importantly, it’s now much too expensive for the occasional sushi splurge night. If it was waaaay better than all the competition, I might be able to justify the double-priced sushi rolls… but it’s not. And to top it off, it’s gone from having a homey feel to putting what looks like advertisements in their menu for companies like PayPal, EBay and more.((ex. PayPal Roll( )) I guess that’s why I was there on a Friday night and there were lots of tables open. It used to be packed all the time. I went because I love Macadamia nuts on my sushi but the roll I ordered with it was missing them. They did bring me a lil bowl of them to top off the remaining roll but… come on, for over $ 20, I kinda want every bite to be amazing. $ 20– $ 35 for their sushi roles! 7 $/11 $ for their garlic edamame appetizer(delicious) and $ 14 for the 5-piece Kalbi appetizer(typical). Way too expensive because the South Bay has a lot of excellent, reasonably priced options. I was spoiling my guy with a night out but when he found out how much my total bill was, he said the sushi suddenly didn’t taste as good. Booh. Won’t see ya there!

When I sat down with my hubby to eat dinner, the first words that came out of my mouth«My bad!!» All because I CHOSE the restaurant since i was craving sushi and thought it would be a good idea since we’ll be using a passport card. WRONG. Whoah, it’s been awhile since I’ve had super duper sticker shock at a restaurant. Majority of the rolls were in the $ 20s to $ 35WTH?! Examples of other pricey restaurant options passed through my mind(all of which I’d rather eat at). May be I expected the sushi to blow me away because of the price, but it wasn’t. It was just OK and I was still hungry when we left. Dairy Queen across the street for dessert looked very tempting. For the price, i felt the service wasn’t quite there. Friendly, but average. Probably won’t be running back anytime soon.

The garlic edamame is my favorite thing on the menu. It’s so good and I can eat an order to myself. Anyways, the sushi here is good. You can taste the quality of it and the portions are huge. I love the service as well. On the other hand, they have a very extensive menu. It’s actually really overwhelming; to the point where I don’t even want to look at it anymore. ALSO, prepare to break the bank because this place is EXPENSIVE as hell-o! Get that edamame and stick with the rolls! Also, the seafood udon wasn’t that good.

Came here recently and tried a variety of sushi and rolls. All were quite tasty, although not necessarily the best I’ve had. Just OK. Despite the high prices which many others have talked about here, I did feel that they were matched by appropriately generous portions, whether large cuts of fish on the sushi, or gigantic rolls to gorge on. The key redeeming features about this place are the super, super friendly owners and staff. They really seem to know many of the customers on a personal, first-name basis, and they seem to sponsor a lot of local groups, so you can see why this place has a nice, loyal following and seems to be a popular community hangout.

If it wasn’t for the Google Deals($ 25 for $ 50 worth of food), I wouldn’t have eaten at this restaurant. Everything is 2x the cost of other Japanese restaurants in the area. The rolls are large and has fresh fish, but it’s not worth the $ 20-$ 30 price range. We ordered the Outer Limit Roll, which came with 6 pieces of toro roll and 2 sashimi pieces of toro. The toro roll wasn’t worth the price since the toro was chopped up. The toro sashimi was delicious! We also had the Pymp Daddy roll which came with an array of seafood — ika, hamachi, unagi, and more. It was supposed to be spicy, but I didn’t taste any heat. We received a complimentary bowl of edamame beans. It’s probably because we had to wait a while for the food due to the restaurant being crowded. That was a nice touch. As with parking, we parked along the residential street so we didn’t have to worry about valet. The bottom line is to come here to eat the rolls, but have a lot of $$$ to pay the bill.
