Wow! I must admit I was very skeptical. We attempted the drive at night — and had the wrong address in our GPS. You have to walk through a very dated tiny general store to get to the restaurant is back. What a wonderful surprise! It’s a quaint spot — I can see why it would be critical to have a reservation during high season. Everything was amazing. We started with a pear salad that was perfectly prepared. My love ordered the seafood steam pot and enjoyed every drop! I ordered the salmon with purple sweet potato purée. Wow! Wow! Wow! We couldn’t leave without ordering dessert — chocolate cake with peanut butter icing and a chocolate pecan pie. This was truly one of the better dining experiences I’ve had. Don’t let the storefront fool you. This place is a true gem. Be sure to print your directions — you will lose cell service.

Gem of a place. Excellent crab cakes and ribs. How many places do both of those well? Friendly, efficient staff. Very good craft beer selection at reasonable prices. The only downside is that it’s 10 miles from town. Easy to get there, but before you arrive you’ll swear you are lost. You’re not.

If you are ever even remotely close to Cambridge, you should go to this restaurant. The chef is fantastic! We have eaten at this little gem many times and the food is always special. Last week it was seared mahi with crispy oysters which were light and crisp paired with a lemon buerre blanc. I would eat these oysters every day of the week! The very large piece of mahi was perfectly cooked and juicy. Shrimp and grits were delicious, bison short ribs are tender and wonderful! Mussels are prepared perfectly and you will want a spoon to make sure you don’t miss any of the poaching liquid. The steak frites is an enormous perfectly cooked piece of beef served with truffled fries that are to die for. If by any chance you have room for dessert, the cakes are made in house. Only once have I had room for dessert — a slice of spice cake which was lovely. This is a very special place run by A couple who truly care about food and their guests.

Do not miss this hidden gem!!! Food is amazing, atmosphere is quaint, and we never miss a chance to dine here. Who knew a small general store and restaurant in the middle of no where would house a talented chef and a pastry artist? Everything on the menu is fabulous and the daily specials are always delicious. Nothing on Rt. 50(or Baltimore) can serve you such a wonderful meal. It’s so worth the detour.

I normally do not write to TripAdvisor but I have to speak up about this little treasure outside of Cambridge, MD. Everyone hopes to find that local«hangout» spot, where the service is friendly, drinks are good and the food is surprisingly tasty. University Restaurant is that place! My fiancée and I love to visit the restaurant(within a general store) whenever we are passing through Maryland’s Eastern Shore. We have yet to be disappointed. When you walk through the general store you are greeted with a warm welcome. The staff is always friendly and entertaining. The kitchen is open, so you can watch the Chef cook away. The upstairs dining is comfortable with a country feel with dark woods, a fire place(and wood-stove downstairs), stone accent walls. The menu is very diverse and offers everything from Maryland favorites such as cream of crab(DELICIOUS!) to specials with an Asian twist. There is also fresh local seafood(Got to try the trout!) and steaks to choose from. We definitely recommend University Restaurant to all who are looking for a good meal, great company and awesome prices!

A 10-mile drive from U.S. 50 in Cambridge Maryland lies a true dining destination: Tucked in the rear of the 1875 Lewis General Store is the University Restaurant. Open for dinner only three nights a week — Thurs-Sat — from 5:30−8 pm, University has quietly and quickly claimed a loyal following in three years. Having enjoyed a few fabulous meals there recently, I’m ready to proclaim it among the Eastern Shore’s most memorable and ‘worth going out of your way for’ restaurants. The seasonal menu capitalizes on renowned regional fare — rockfish, oysters, crab — and the chef’s nightly specials feature creative interpretations of traditional dishes. On different visits we’ve enjoyed a variety of dishes: French onion soup, Maryland crab spring rolls, single fried oysters, ahi tuna, roasted lamb and assorted fresh baked desserts. A limited beer and wine list features a few local microbrews. I’m not certain if they have a corkage fee but assume owners Youngman and Jennifer would welcome patrons bringing a favorite wine to accompany their outstanding cuisine. Reservations recommended as restaurant only seats 30. Casual dress.
