This review is for potential CONCERTGOERS(not students) The free concerts here are amazing and a great community resource. The quality is extremely high, and the student concerts have a real energy that sets them apart. And they’re free…

I would not recommend attending Longy’s voice department for a MM. It is disorganized and over-crowded. There is a lack of respect towards the students and a lack of depth in instruction.

Quality instruction for both undergrad and grad program. Also they generously offer classes for general public as well. Free concerts will never disappoint you as long as you pick the piece you want to listen. I forgot which night it was. But their chamber orchestra performs on regular basis. That one is always fun to listen to. And it’s free! You can also check out the concert schedule on the link below:

If you love music, especially classical and want to have access to amazing music for free this is the place to be! I just came back from an amazing performance — the Graduate Performance Diploma concert which is free to the public. Tonight’s performance featured Diana Shapiro and Stanislava Varsharvsky both on pianos(and both winners of numerous prestigious duo competitions) playing three pieces — Allegro brilliant opus 92(Mendelssohn), Variations on a theme of Beethoven opus 35(Saint-Saens), and Suite No. 2 opus 17(Rachmaninoff). I was floored by their talent and captivated the entirety of the concert. As an encore they jammed out their own rendition of Paganini’s Caprice! All this free to share with the public — what a treasure to have almost literally across the street from my place. Anyway, there are a lot of other offerings to suit any musical tastes — from choir to jazz this place really has so much for the general musical enthusiast. There are also other concerts that you can look up through their events page — Check this place out — it’s especially a good resource when you might have a friend or relative visiting the area.

i used to take violin lessons through longy as a kid. my teacher, beth cohen, was amazing – not only did she teach me how to read music(i started out a suzuki brat), but she was really into all sorts o fworld music, so she transcribed bengali folk songs for me to play. at her house, she always had cool femo and beads and stuff out for us to play with if she was taking extra time with the previous student, and our group concerts were off the hook(a great mix of the classical staples combined with all sorts of hungarian/greek/turkish folk music). i’m not sure if beth is still at longy, but if so, i highly recommend her as a teacher!
