This is a quicky review, and I hope to provide useful information for those looking for an authentic Portuguese culinary experience. Fernandes is really the place for you! I often come here for specialized items such as bacalhao(salted cod), queijo fresco(fresh cheese), queijo de sao jorge(best cheese ever… trust me!), biscuits and massa suavada(sweet bread). A few quick points: Location: it is a bit inconvenient if you’re arriving by public transportation. The 69 bus will drop you right in front of it, but it runs infrequently and is not on time. The walk from Central Square is about ten to fifteen minutes. Car is really the best way to go. Parking on Cambridge St is generally pretty ok. Best days to go: On Wednesdays. I think that is when they receive/make a lot of the deli items. Culinary suggestions from the deli: They have freshly deep fried charros(fish). It is amazing, and a large box will cost around $ 7. These go amazingly with white wine and simple boiled potatoes or yams(which you can get of the variety from Sao Miguel when in season). Financial matters: Reasonably priced but CASHONLY. They are a small business so it makes sense for them. Service: Very friendly and will help explain things for uncertain non-Portuguese customers. I can not tell you about how good the English is because I never speak to them in it. Random tidbits: don’t let the smell, size or strange characters hanging outside put you off. It’s well worth the trip :)

today i went for a walk in my neighborhood and totally transported myself back to portugal instead. in addition to heaps of bacalao(salted cod), fernandes has a tasty assortment of portuguese cheese(read: queijo fresco… yesss!!). this feels more like a portuguese grocery store than simply a fish market. it felt nice to lose the english for awhile.

If you want an old-fashoned fish market, this is it. The selection is limited(it’s a Portuguese market), but if you want fresh olives, cheese, fish, sardines or salted cod, this is a good place. I’m not sure that the staff speaks English superbly, but if that turns you off, you probably will not be barbecuing any sardines anyway. Good, local, old time business!
