The wines are so memorable, silky Diamond Mnt Cab principally, not to mention a notably elegant SB intermezzo, that I feel a tad guilty evoking the gracious setting. This is a place for collectors fully graduated from the Napa Valley amateur hour. A secret estate meets a panoramic view and understated salesmanship at this winery. It’s easy to see why they have a wait list for their allocations. The experience is about the wine and soil, but the visitor comes away with a grand memory of Napa at the same time.

Just up the mountain from the famed Château Montelena is a hidden gem. Vinyardist produces a singular Cabernet Sauvignon off of a handful of acres. The winemaker used to produce Kobalt and is somewhat of a cult collector wine producer. Got a good tasting of the 2011 vintage. Started out a bit subdued and alcoholic but as it opened up it was spicier and softer on the palate. It’s nice to see some not so commercial finds sometimes not so far from some of the most famous in the area
