Not sure why Camp Allegheny is listed as Closed on Unilocal.(edited to say, they fixed that and added the url I submitted) This place was formative in my youth. As a NYC suburban girl I was sent here every summer with the Southern Belles. Add to that I’m an introvert and was kind of messed up from going to grade school in the Bronx for 2 years. It was not a happy mix. Allegheny is rather homogeneously white, christian, and upper middle class. Makes sense from the cost of attending and the location. I came away from 8 years knowing in my soul that I’m a northerner. I never did win an engraved silver bowl(not kidding they have a serious awards ceremony) for happiest camper. They divide all the girls up into 2 groups and have team competitions. The teams are the grays and the blues. Why yes, they are still fighting the civil war. If my sister had attended she would have been put in the same team I was so the family didn’t get split up with a summer camp rivalry. Many of the campers were 2nd/3rd generation and were on the same team as their mothers. I now refer to it as summer camp for southern belles when talking to folks about it. Sums up the experience rapidly. A couple of times I went to Girl Scout Camp. I highly recommend sending your kids to GS camp over Camp Allegheny. The main benefit I got from going was the slight southern accent I picked up each summer neutralized my NYC area accent and when I went away to college and then moved to Denver, folks tell me that I don’t sound like a New Yorker. Skills I learned there that I’ve used since included archery, fire building, canoeing, and horseback riding.
