We couldn’t quite home in on what seemed a good fit for lunch, most things sounded good, but nothing really jumped out — so we decided on Hursey’s because they offer a nice variety of excellent plate choices — pork bbq, ribs, seafood, and broasted chicken, and almost all their sides are favorites — and it had been awhile since we’d eaten here. We settled on the Seafood Combo Plate(Flounder & Popcorn Shrimp for $ 10.69, with slaw and FFs) and the 2 piece Broasted Chicken Plate($ 5.69 for dark meat) with Mac & Cheese & Slaw — both came with HPs, as well. As usual, the food was excellent, with the single exception of the FFs, which are breaded, and had a strange texture, and very little potato taste. The broasted chicken was simply excellent, with a crispy skin, tender & moist inside, and great, great flavor. The Flounder was plentiful, also with a nice fresh taste. The Popcorn Shrimp were also very good, but the portion was tiny, really tiny. HPs were excellent this time(can be leathery at times), the Mac & Cheese smooth & rich, and the slaw is always nice here, though it is very, very finely chopped. All in all, the food was excellent. We used to come here quite often, probably at least once a month, but we don’t come as often now — a combination of value(portion size has shrunk & prices have risen) and the service can be spotty when busy. Today was a perfect example — there was only one waitress on the floor, there was a table of four that took 10 minutes(yeap, 10 minutes to order in a BBQ joint — waitress had to explain every item on the menu — guess they don’t get out much), and then a group 14 or so came in, with 5 kids under 5 or 6, and the place became a zoo. Luckily we had our food, but never even came close to a refill or a «how are you doing», had to go to the front counter for a to go box. Still, we do like the food, and we’ll drop in again.

Excellent hush puppies! Crisp and not dry. The bbq is chopped, which isn’t my preference, but has great flavor. I didn’t have to add any hot sauce, mustard, or vinegar. Yum!

I had baby back ribs. The ribs were dank. The meat fell off the bone. it was so tender. The fries were alot better than I thought they would be. The slaw was good.

Let’s be clear that I am reviewing the S. Church street location which is where the pit is. I loved my lunch today. The pit and woodpile is right near the door and you can see and smell the smoke from the parking lot. There was a guy feeding hickory logs into the small iron door of the huge bricked in pit. The service was friendly and attentive. The pork BBQ was great and came out already sauced, although you could add more from the bottles on the tables if you wanted to, but I thought it was already perfectly sauced up — not too little, not too much. Great flavor, texture, moistness etc. and a nice fine chop and cleaned of all the nasty little bits that some of us hate — those un-chewable gristly/greasy parts and thicker pieces of skin too tough to chew(I bet your dog would love it though). Cole slaw was good, hush puppies also, and the Brunswick stew is well made here with good flavor. Mac and cheese was creamy and soft, nothing special but certainly up to par. I ate it all with passion. Took a picture and sent it to a friend, he said«Man I have GOT to take a road trip soon.» You bet he does, and so do YOU.
