We visited this place during a day trip to Buffalo, and we’re glad we discovered this on Unilocal!Since visiting Burma Superstar in San Francisco, I’ve been on the hunt for an equally delicious Burmese food experience. While Sun Cuisines doesn’t top that, it comes close. Definitely a solid choice for a tasty and interesting meal. First, parking. There’s a parking lot connected to the restaurant, so you won’t have to worry about paying for parking or leaving your car too far away from the restaurant. Second, the atmosphere. It’s nice inside! White tablecloths, interesting art, very clean — modern yet showcasing Burmese culture in a very tasteful and interesting way. There’s also a decent amount of seating. Good for dates, families, small groups. Third, the food. This place doesn’t only have Burmese food, they have Thai, and sushi as well. When we were there, they had a Buy 1, Get 1 Free special on their sushi rolls, so we ordered: a) the Seared Beef and Mango Rolls(good size, and didn’t scrimp on the meat!), along with b) a Burmese Tea Leaf Salad and c) Burmese Beef Curry. I was a bit disappointed with the Tea Leaf Salad — it was too bitter for me, although it had great textures(others I’ve had elsewhere were a bit sweeter). The sushi and the Burmese Beef Curry were delicious — fresh, tasty, lots of different flavours that melded together so well. Very well done! Lastly, make reservations. Even on a late Saturday afternoon, the place was half full. It looks like a popular spot, so make sure you save yourself a table. For two people, with tax, and tip, we paid around $ 38.00.

Good food and good ambience. Tucked away from the city but definitely worth a visit. Ginger tea is great. Pad Thai is on the lightly sweet side, which is the way it should be. Basil fried rice were fantastic. Definitely worth coming back.

First time there as a friend, the seating was a little weird where everyone was sitting on top of each other. I was warned about the slow service so i was already expecting it. But the food was very good we got the mango chicken which was a little bland but still good, and the eggplant dish with shrimp which was amazing but only had about 6 pieces of shrimp. Will go back again to try more dishes like the sushi!

I’ve been frequenting Sun since it was an Asian market in the front and a very small restaurant in the back, up the stairs. I watched it transform into the well appointed place it is today add I happily blushed through most of the items on the menu. I’ve never had a bad meal there and feel confident that whatever I order is going to be a flavor explain. You can’t go wrong with the black rice salad, the tea leaf salad, the curries, the phô, the crispy duck, the whole fish… see you just can’t go wrong!

We really liked the atmosphere and decoration in Sun Restaurant. It is dark and calming, and the restaurant was nice and quiet. As for the food, my fish, which was served on a giant platter shaped like a fish, was delicious, as was the famed black sticky rice! Definitely try the black rice. The noodles with vegetables were, on the other hand, nothing special. We’d love to go again and branch out to try some of the sushi.

Hands down… best Thai/Vietnamese place in Buffalo. Came here to celebrate my 30th birthday on a Thursday night. They had $ 5 saki/$ 5 sushi roll specials. Ordered a crab roll as an appetizer before my basil noodle dish. Always enjoy a Thai iced tea when there as well.

Avocado wrapped sushi people! Whoever designed this amazing menu is a certified genius. Delicious and worth every penny. The location is on Niagara St, and the outside does not prepare you for the wonderful setting inside. Much of the décor will catch your eye and perhaps some interest. It is dimly lit and great for intimate dinners. The staff is wonderful and informed. The food is well presented and a must try for Buffalo food adventurers! Beware, you will want to try the whole menu, everything is novel and executed with perfection; although they also don’t mind if you go rogue; which I did with the black rice sushi. They have an extensive fish selection and styles and are vegetarian friendly. They also have lunch specials, a great time to try one of their many salads or soups or both. Best Burmese restaurant so far, but Im hoping they will get some more competition soon as I can get enough of these flavours.

Amazing food. I’ve been here many times and am never disappointed. Best sushi in town, awesome Thai(among the best I’ve had outside of Thailand), and fresh preparations. I have only had excellent service and super food. This is one of my favorite places in Buffalo. It’s a great spot for a date, a group of friends, or bringing picky eaters who want to branch out a little(it’s very authentic, but accessible for simple eaters I think). Sun is awesome!!!

The food is absolutely delicious. I have been a few times and ordered something different each time(pad Thai, mango black rice sushi, Burmese stir fry). The menu is extensive and includes a variety of different(mostly southeast) Asian dishes. I love and savor every bite! However, you must have time because service is quite slow and takes a while– the quality of the food is well worth the wait though as long as you know your time spent there will be longer than average! Prices are very reasonable as well. Check it out — the food definitely will not disappoint.

This place just makes me happy, in a way that usually only adorable purring kittens can make me happy. I love Sun Cuisines and yet, it had been some time since my last visit. I ended up here for a late dinner last night that reminded me to never let it go that long again. We started with the Chicken Curry with Paratha as an appetizer. This was very good but would have been better for one; it wasn’t really a sharable portion which was the intention. For dinner, I ordered the Spider Roll. This was incredible; best Spider Roll I have ever had. My friend ordered the Coconut Seafood Medley which I tasted and thought was very good as well. I concluded the meal with the Mango Sticky Black Rice which is always a treat. There is no way I can remember everything I’ve had here over time and I should have written a review sooner. But I want to add that Sun’s Black Rice Salad is amazing. I always want to order that every time but I also want to try new dishes. Their menu is huge. You may want to browse it online before going. I am never decided when the server first comes to take my order — and the service is consistently great here; attentive and friendly. From the outside, this place looks very casual. The inside however, is quite nice – more of a classy casual with soft lighting and a very serene ambience. Great for date night, casual business, or for sharing an assortment of dishes with friends.

Disappointed overall with the Thai cuisine that we had here. I saw the positive reviews and expected better. Tried the food here twice and was disappointed both times. Why did I try it twice, when I didn’t like it the first time? Peer pressure of the reviews. I thought it was possibly a bad day and tried again. Chicken was dry and chewy. Noodles lacked texture. Ambiance of the place is nice but located in a questionable part of buffalo. If this is your last resort, would be my recommendation.

I’m extremely surprised by these rave reviews. My experience at Sun was just average. Except for the black rice dishes(which you can’t really find elsewhere in Buffalo, at least not that I’m aware), the food here was ridiculously average. I had the sushi, a soup, and part of a curry, and I felt that nothing about the meal was special. Lots of other restaurants in Buffalo will prepare the same food for much cheaper. Having thought I might have gone on a bad day, I returned to the restaurant and found my second meal to be just as mediocre as the first. Determined to give Sun another chance, I tried their sushi at the Expo market and left with nothing but average sushi and $ 16 less in my pocket. I’m sure this restaurant was really good at some point, but it seems like it might have lost touch with its roots as it became super popular through word-of-mouth, etc. I also think it tries a bit too hard to be trendy — this is Buffalo, not New York City. The prices are also too high compared to similar food you would find in the neighborhood/Buffalo in general. I’m sure it’s worth a try if you haven’t been, but don’t expect to be wowed like all of the other reviewers have been, especially if you’ve lived in a big city with lots of great food options.

So disappointed. Friends have raved about Sun for quite sometime so I finally decided to head over for a nice warm noodle filled lunch. I was alone and seated at a booth by the window and felt as if I had been forgotten about. By no means was the restaurant busy. I knew what time I arrived because I have an hour lunch so I was one eye on my watch the entire time. When the server came over to greet me, I ordered the Jasmine tea and Pad Thai with chicken. First came miso soup and a salad which had spicy mayo as the dressing. The soup was luke warm at best and I wasn’t interested in lettuce and spicy mayo so I waited. Finally my Jasmine tea came and I was able to enjoy one and a half mugs full. It was good. By the time my Pad Thai came out I had to request a take out box and wrap it right up. My work is less than a ten minute drive away, pending traffic. When I got back to work I sat at my desk to eat and here is where the real disappointment comes, flavorless. Completely lack flavor all the way around. Noodles, a little chicken and bean sprouts. I am pretty sure they forgot to add peanuts. Sometimes I am ready and willing to give a place a second shot. With West Side Bazaar and Phở Dollar even closer to my work, it will take quite a bit of someone talking me into heading out to Sun again.

Saying that Sun serves the best Asian cuisine is an understatement. The serves is impeccable, the range of dishes is impressive and the atmosphere is so calming. My bf & I use to come here back in the day when the owners still operated a storefront off of Niagara Street. Those were the days! We love the remodel & we still get that same«mom & pop» charm like we did when we first started coming here. Be sure to try the black rice rolls & the green curry!

Sun has an interesting menu, and almost everything is good. My favorite things to get are the fresh spring rolls and the sashimi. The black rice is popular here but I do not recommend getting it with fish. Black rice has a sweet flavor that works well with sweet potato or avocado if you like vegetarian rolls and nigiri. However it overpowers the flavor of the fish, which is great quality at Sun. The service is slow, even when the restaurant isn’t busy because they are understaffed. This is annoying, but if you aren’t in a rush Sun is definitely worth the wait.

Ah-mazing food but painfully slow service. The first time I came here, we literally waited two hours for the food to come out. Seriously, we got through about 2 bottles of wine and several sake shots before the food came out. Understandably, it’s always busy here since they are one of the most authentic Asian restaurants in the area. The food is THAT good, but I’m not so sure id be willing to sacrifice that much time for it. Just be prepared to not be hangry before you arrive and all will be good. The curry chicken is so incredible… Tender, fall-off-the-bone of sorts. Their eggplant dish is just as wonderful and this is coming from a gal who doesn’t eat anything without meat in it; although you can get it with meat for an extra charge. It was so good the first time I tried it, that I ordered it as my main dish the second time I came here. The eggplant skin is so crispy and flavorful, it just melts in your mouth the second you take that first bite. The black rice sushi is also a must have; I love the fragrant, grainy texture of the rice in contrast to the delicate piece of fish. The«sun pods» were also really fun to eat– I can’t really describe it so you’ll have to try it yourself. But it’s… fun? All in all, you can’t go wrong with anything you order. Heck, my friend ordered the sesame chicken which I totally judged her for because we all know that’s an Americanized dish that no one eats in Asia, but I tried it anddddd it was pretty delicious. But I beg of you, please try an actual authentic dish if you’re going to come here. I promise you you won’t regret it. The portions are standard but filling enough for you to be able to finish in one sitting… Unless you’re a wimp.

This week features Burmese and Thai food from Sun Restaurant in the Black Rock neighborhood of Buffalo, NY. Burma is located between India and Thailand and the cuisine displays the best of both worlds fused together. Needless to say we were both excited to try this place out. Setting: The interior is even nicer than we expected. There are both tables and booths available for patrons and a small bar in the upper sections. The decorations are exactly what you expect from a place located between India and Thailand and that’s not a bad thing. Menu: The menu is vast and contains a dozen choices that we had never heard of. Some of the more exotic options include Crispy Salmon Skin Salad, Tea Leaf Salad, antioxidant loaded Black Rice, Pumpkin Curry, and a Seafood Pineapple Boat. The price of entrees starts around $ 12 and levels off around $ 20 before hitting the $ 40 mark for a roasted duck. Food: We got an appetizer of chicken curry with paratha which is layered, pan fried Indian bread. Mmmmm. It was tasty and when we do it again we will double up on the paratha since we really had to load the curry on there. We split an entrée of Kat Kyay Kite(Burmese Flat Wide Noodle) with Pork. The entrée proved to be as enjoyable as the appetizer. We will probably go with a more exotic meal next time around since it was similar to familiar Thai dishes. We were looking for a more unique experience and might give the Seafood Pineapple Boat a shot next time. Overall: Sun Restaurant was a good experience. The atmosphere was impressive, the service was excellent, and the food was done just right. We paid $ 25 for everything and clearly got a good deal. Next time we will have to venture farther away from our comfort zone to see what this place really has to offer. That will be the true test of Sun Restaurant. Overall: B.

Fact– Paul Revere actually was not warning of the British were coming, but was just in a rush to get some sushi from Sun. Fact– A pair of injured snow owls once found refuge in the rafters of Sun and were nursed back to health by eating nothing but Pad Thai from sun for 2 weeks. Fact– George Bush tried to eat at Sun, but it was closed. He retaliated by invading Iraq. Fact– Sun has the best Thai food in Buffalo, in a cool setting. Any of the noodle dishes will serve you well(just be careful asking for hot), and the black rice roll is heaven.

The place is very busy so I recommend everyone make reservations! The area isn’t very nice, neither is the outside of the restaurant. The inside however is completely different. It’s a beautiful sit in place with great atmosphere. I ordered sushi and dessert. The quality of the fish was great. I did not enjoy the rice much because it was too sweet. I threw away about half the amount of rice. It was starting to overwhelm the fish. The mango in the rolls were different. It was refreshing and sweet but all went well together. The entrees that were coming out of the kitchen did look extremely appetizing so I will be going back to try that.

I heard a lot of hype about Sun Restaurant and had a coupon that was expiring the next day so it was time to finally try it. It’s a smaller and intimate place but still enough seating that you won’t wait too long if it were crowded. We happened to go on a Thursday which was exciting because they had a selection of black rice sushi rolls on special for $ 5. We had the calamari and a black rice tuna roll to start. The calamari is done in a tempura batter and was a little on the greasy side but still good. The black rice tuna roll was delicious but personally, I couldn’t taste the difference between black rice and regular rice. I wasn’t feeling too adventurous and really wanted some comfort food so I stuck to the Chicken Pad Thai. My date ordered a wide noodle Burmese dish which was delicious. It definitely makes me want to go back and order off of the Burmese menu. I did dock a star for their use of the coupon. It was for a free appetizer so they took off the price of the $ 5 roll instead of the $ 6.75 calamari. I thought that was kind of cheap of them.

Until recently I had never tried Burmese cuisine before. I’m so glad that I chose Sun for my first foray into it! Every time that I have been to Sun for dinner has been an enjoyable and delicious experience. All of the dishes and rolls have different unique and complex tastes to them. I highly recommend ordering anything from the black rice bar(the only one in Buffalo!). I especially like the black rice salad and the grand avocado roll. Every roll that I’ve tried has melted in my mouth and a lot of have cantaloupe, avocado, another ingredient inside the black rice roll. Yes, Sun is a little bit more on the pricey side than other Burmese restaurants in the area but I believe you get what you pay for here. I highly recommend Sun for anyone who wants to dive into some delicious Thai/Burmese cuisine.

What a gem! This restaurant has great, friendly service and amazing food. If you haven’t tried Burmese food yet, you must! This place also has great black rice sushi and Thai food. We had the tofu salad. It was a little grainy but yummy; beware, it is not the traditional smooth-textured tofu. We also ordered beef curry that was amazing! Very different seasonings. The chicken coconut soup also very yummy! I don’t think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. We will be back to try more things.

If I could give this restaurant and cultural experience more stars I would in a heartbeat! I promote and tell people in the burbs and anywhere about this restaurant if they haven’t had the experience yet. Its one of my favorites hands down. For my birthday this past year I could choose anywhere to go and of course I chose Sun Restaurant, even though I’ve been there before. I’m VERY passionate about the Black rice they use because of how it tastes(little sweeter) and all the positive health benefits. Let me just say black rice has more antioxidants than blueberries. I enjoy the texture and taste 10 times better than white or brown rice! My birthday feel on a Thursday, which was perfect because at Sun Restaurant on Thursdays is their Black rice sushi special($ 5 rolls) and sake specials! So of course we started off with a few black rice sushi roll. We ordered the crab, mango, and tuna rolls. OUTSTANDING!!! Then for my entrée I ordered the Burmese curry pumpkin stew. Don’t worry I’ll post a picture of this work of art! The stew comes in a steamed green pumpkin! Its fresh and inside were smaller soft pieces of the pumpkin(like sweet potato), veggies(asparagus, onion, think mushroom), seafood(you can order other types of meat or vegetarian too), and a side of rice(paid $ 2 more for upgrade of black rice vs. white). The flavor was OUTOFTHISWORLD .YUM! I couldn’t finish it so they wrapped up my pumpkin and placed the stew in a separate container. My boyfriend Dan ordered the red curry chicken dish with a side of rice. That also was a winner and very tasty. For dessert we ordered the banana leaf with sticky rice w/coconut milk in the middle. I’ve never tried anything like this before and trust me I didn’t regret it! The service is exceptional, the interior is clean and remodeled. Because of experiencing black rice from here I buy it from Wegmans(could at Asian markets too) in the organic section. Lundenburg is the brand for less than $ 4 a bag(in a yellow bag). Sun Restaurant never lets us down and they offer Thai and Burmese. Sun Restaurant is the«sunshine of my day».
