Downtown you will see this church if you are anywhere in the area of City Hall. Or driving down one of the thruway ramps. As the Italians began to arrive in the 1870s, they came to the Lower West Side. They wanted a church with services in Italian. In 1891 The Church of St Anthony was formed and built. It was the first Italian Catholic church in Buffalo, but there were 20,000 Italians in Buffalo, so more were to follow. By 1904 they had to make the church bigger. In 1991 the still active parish restored the interiors murals and artwork. They went to Ohio for the sandstone that this is made of. If you are passing by and its open, you should go in. Its beautiful.
