Great Italian takeout food, anything from subs, hot sandwiches, to Italian plates. Fast, and friendly service. I try to stop in at least a few times when I travel to Maine for work.

I grew up in Topsham, the neighboring town, and I know about 10 different spots in the area to get a decent italian sandwich. But, I would say in all of Maine(and this means the world since you can’t get ‘em elsewhere), Amato’s is the best. Now you have to get the«Real Italian»; this is ham, cheese, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, pickles and olives on a roll with salt, pepper and oil on top. If you are vegan, vegetarian, kosher or halal you are shit out of luck. Gotta get the ham italian. The beauty of it lies in the details. Kalamata olives, not many places use these, usually you’re getting California black. True Mainers have an aversion to pretty much anything that comes out of California(except long lost relatives). Sour pickles, another rarity in the sandwich world, and essential to the flavor. Also particular to Amato’s is the tomato and onion preparation: chunks, hearty chunks, not those flavorless slices that most joints serve. All of this loaded on a fresh roll without any of that mayo/mustard garbage, I’m talking about a complementary adornment of oil, salt and pepper, and we’re good buddy. I ate here all my life and every time I come back to Maine it’s one of my first stops. I know most of my friends that still live in the area eat here all the time, they just haven’t Unilocaled it yet because they’;re still working out the whole literacy thing. Wicked good, you betcha!

Ever since I had my first Amato’s Italian when I was 17, I’ve been a fan. That was when my girlfriend at the time(now my wife) introduced me to one of their«Real Italians,» which is how the Maine-based chain markets their uniquely different Italian sandwiches. Amato’s actually makes the claim that they invented the Italian – a sandwich on a long roll of Italian(or French) bread, split widthwise either into two pieces or opened in a «V» on one side, filled with a variety of meats, cheeses, vegetables, seasoned with oil and salt and pepper. It’s also a sandwich you used to only be able to find in Maine. Generally, if you go south of Kittery, you’ll have to ask for a sub, a hoagie, a grinder, or something else – not an Italian(although Amato’s has now francished locations in New Hampshire and Vermont). I recognize that saying that«Amato’s makes the best Italian» is subjective, and just like making similar claims about lobster rolls, Southern BBQ, and rock and roll bands. However, in my opinion, their Italian is unique and tastes distinctly different than any other Italian I’ve ever had. Is it the sour pickles, or the oil? I’m not sure. I know that if I was participating in one of those Man vs. Food competitions with Italians, I’d want an Amato’s Italian as my choice for chowing down. The Pleasant St. location is one of a number of full-service stores. The service is always friendly and efficient, although making a left(to go North on US Route 1) out of their lot can be an adventure during those crazy, high-traffic tourist periods or during late afternoon rush hour.

I am a fan of the Amato’s chain as a whole. Even though I am a snobbish New Yorker who has high standards for italian food, I’ve always liked their pizza and meatballs and calzones. It is not fabulous but can’t go wrong. This is basic italian food, not trying to be fancy, just meat and cheesy goodness. Sauce is good and the crust is good. I enjoy the sandwiches too. Maybe it is the simplicity that makes it good, but there is something about oil and vinegar on a sandwich. I also love their pickles that they put on the sandwich, nice and sour. Way better then Subway that is for sure. I disagree this a $$$ priced place though. It is $ 4.99 for a large sandwich and like $ 12 for a large pizza… really people?

had an Italian that overall was a good sandwich, however lacked any substance when it came to the quantity of ham they place in the sandwich. I would have liked to taste the ham along with the bread instead i felt like i was eating veggies with bread. The pizza I ordered was pretty good however i gave them 3 stars because of price and lack of ham in sandwich.

The one star is for the lobster roll. It was inedible and tasted like a paste made of salt. It was that same Dehaime” Premade salad that Gilley’s uses. I picked up an Italian there yesterday and the«DeShames» sign was gone. They claim to make their own now. I don’t want to waste my money on the salt paste when I could spend it on a double italian. The whole«Real Italian» thing is garbage. It’s the«Real Maine Sub.» They should just acknowledge who they are. Otherwise, I eat Amato’s Italians w/salt, pepper & oil all the time.

This applies to the whole Amato’s chain, but this is the one I went to the most at home: Great pizza. The best calzones I’ve ever had. The best Italians I’ve ever had — fresh ingredients, good quality ingredients. They bake their own bread every day and bring it to the stores. I order a pepperoni italian every time I’m home. The bread really makes the sandwich although the rest of it is great too. This particular location has a few seats in back. They sell beer & wine but you can’t drink there.
