My dad worked as a manager here before the name was changed and he decided to stop working here. It was a good area to have a nice small ice cream shop.

Scoopz is a solid ice cream place if you live in the ‘hood, but don’t go out of your way to come here. It’s decently priced and does the trick for a summer evening, but the water-ices are pretty low quality and the sorbets are just fine. Plus they got rid of the best sorbet flavor(coconut!). I haven’t tried the ice cream or gelato.

Not bad. Decent ice cream, pretty good water ice. Prices are excellent. Selection is good, lots of flavors. BF had the red velvet ice cream, which for me is way too sweet, mixing it with vanilla seemed to help. The bratty girl behind the counter who was smoking out front before she scooped our ice cream really bothered me. She had absolutely no interest in serving customers and was way more interested in chatting with her friends who were sitting on the bench out front. I get these walk-up places want cheap, summer labor, but I found her attitude and the fact that she was smoking outside an open air ice cream stand to both be pretty disgusting.

Where have I been? What happened to Lia’s Ices? oh well. I found the ice cream and sorbet at Scoops to be a significant improvement over what was there before. I was suckered into ordering ices and ice creams from Lia’s on many occasions because of it’s proximity to the subway and a terribly hot summer, but never liked what I had. I even threw an ice in the trash once after a few sickeningly sweet bites. Could have been the luck of the draw. Tried the red velvet ice cream and passionfruit sorbet at Scoops recently. Both were really good, and tasted of the things they were named after. The portions were ample. Got to go back and try the vanilla and hot pepper.

Scoops has taken over the old Lia’s Ices space, and although the management is new, the menu is very similar. I tried the chocolate peanut butter gelato, which was rich, creamy, and decadent. Other flavors on the special board, such as vanilla and hot pepper, looked intriguing. My friends seemed to enjoy the pineapple, lemon, and passion fruit ices, none of which were sickeningly sweet. Prices are very reasonable, and the location is great. I just wish they would have kept the former, cuter name.
