Piece of Velvet

My favorite place to get cake, I live in Coney Island so it’s walking distance for me, but if your in the area u must get a slice to go. The slices are big, some people say expensive ($ 6) but I think its worth it. They’re moist and fluffy and u can actually taste the cream cheese frosting. My favorite is red velvet wit cream cheese frosting and pecans, however all they cakes are good, u can always get a sample before u buy

Their cupcakes were good, but this business is «temporarily» closed.

I live in the area, and have been a regular customer since opening day. The employees are ghetto, and sometimes blasting inappropriate rap music, but usually nice. Today was a different story. I walk in behind a woman who asks for something (they didn’t have), then she asked for samples. She saw me and said «go ahead». I thanked her and then waited. And waited. And waited. Two guys were in the shop, both ignoring me. The woman and I exchanged one of those WTF looks. Finally I ask very loudly «can I buy a piece of cake?». One of the guys, who by this time it is clear he is leaving, laughs and says «of course, but I’m finished with my shift». Ok got it. So I watch the other guy plug in his iphone and proceed to do everything imaginable except acknowledge my existence so finally I ask him «are you done plugging in your electronic devices and organizing your music library? Do you think I might be able to purchase a piece of cake? Today?» His surly response– «oh, I thought you wanted a sample». No, I want to buy a piece of cake. Which apparently is much more difficult than it should be in a place that… sells…cake. Overpriced cake at that.
Cake is decent, which is the ONLY reason I gave 2 stars, but that will be the last time I step foot in here. I don’t give my $ to places that treat their customers like a piece of shit on the bottom of their shoe.
They way you’re headed, you’ll be out of business soon anyway.

Stay away from this place. they are a rip off. Have no respect for customers or the Groupons they buy. I bought a Groupon and called a week before, the man told me you have to call 24 hours ahead so i called on a friday for a sat. evening pick up. gave my name, etc… then i go in there and he refuses to take the Groupon. He says that they do not take printed Groupons. I said that no place on the Groupon does it say that it has to be presented with a Smart Phone. He shrugs and says «too bad» the I huffed out and contacted Groupon and told them. He just smirked and said «have a nice day» as if to really rub in the fact that I could not get the cakes I had promised my kids who were waiting in the car because of his «power». This place smelled bad too like stale air and the cakes looked old as well Perhaps him acting the fool was really protecting me and my kids. It should be called «piece of shit.»

Coney Island just isn’t what it used to be. There’s plenty of new shops with jacked up prices for poor quality goods. This place is no exception!
Steps away from the end of the brooklyn half marathon, you’d think the shop owner and staff would do all they can to capitalize on the uptick in traffic. Let’s be real, no one would come to this place on purpose — if not for just walking by.
In any event, I was met with horrible customer service and stale cake!

I’m very confused…
We came into this shop and were given samples; the samples were moist, rich and delicious.
The staff was very helpful and sweet and didn’t get annoyed at the fact that there were 13 of us all asking questions and sampling things.
We were very excited to purchase the cupcakes– we got a variety of things as well.
It was late in the day and they didn’t have any of the «alcohol cupcakes» available so I picked up a mixed dozen for $ 10.
We were told that they currently offer a Groupon for 2 dozen at $ 10, but you had to call 48 hrs ahead.
No problem, we made our purchases, thanked them and left.
Excited to eat our cupcakes, we came home and were very confused.
The cupcakes had absolutely no taste at all.
They were literally just small, colored balls of sugar– flavored air…
I was thoroughly disappointed.
All that circling for parking around Luna Park for no reason.
Definitely not worth the trouble and the $ 10.
I’m thinking that because of the Groupon demand, they were baking for quantity and not quality.
Would I be back, probably not.
So many more bakeries in the world and so little time to eat from them all.
1 star just because the staff was sweet and 1 because Rita’s was right next door.

I seldom post reviews online. However, the customer service during my first (and final) visit to this place was so outrageous that I decided to do so.
My wife and her friend ordered 2 dozen of cupcakes each, through Groupon. My wife called ahead (as required by the store’s silly policy) and gave both her, and her friend’s name. Then they sent me to pick up the cupcakes giving me the printout confirmations. I showed the printouts to the young lady behind the counter. In a very condescending tone, she said that according to the store’s policy, she can’t accept the printouts as a proof of purchase, turned around and completely ignored me. At that point I was shocked. I thought I said something that the lady did not like, but my only words up to this point were «good morning. I would like to pick up the cupcakes that we ordered online». Well, I asked what other proof of purchase can I offer. Apparently, the store needs to see the Groupon purchase online. That means that if you don’t have any internet connected device, you are not able to pick up your order. Not a big deal. Who doesn’t carry a smartphone. I downloaded the app, Called my wife to get the login info, logged in, and asked for help with what to do next (not too familiar with Groupon ordering, but assumed it should be pretty straight forward). The young lady took my phone, redeemed the coupon, and went to get the cupcakes. I then called my wife’s friend to get her login info. That’s when the whole mess started… I logged in with the other account, and showed the lady the redeemed coupon on my phone (I clicked «redeem» as I was standing in front of her). She went crazy! Like, seriously… crazy. She started accusing me of cheating! Told me that I redeemed the coupon myself, insinuating that I try to get free cupcakes! I then asked her to check her record to see if there were any purchased cupcakes from those accounts and when were they redeemed. She then told me that I did not call ahead and that my name is not on the list. That was true since my wife called and gave 2 female names. She told me that my wife/​friend would have to come in person to pick it up… A twilight zone! Finally, after 10 minutes conversation on the phone with the owner (I spoke with the owner as well. Complete madness), I got the remaining 2 boxes of cupcakes. I spent there about 30 – 45 minutes. It was Saturday morning. The store was empty with me being the only customer. What a start of a day.
The bottom line, worst customer service ever. Beware.
Cupcakes were ok.

I learned about this shop through groupon. Ironically I live in the area but had never saw the shop before.
I purchased a groupon for 2 dozen mini cupcakes and was required to place an order 24 hours prior to when I wanted to pick them up. The cupcakes came in assorted flavors but I was never told which flavors were which when I went to pick them up. The shop itself was small but cute and appeared to be clean. They also had a small seating section inside.
There was an A grade in their window as well. The cupcakes were very nicely decorated and very moist but not doughy or dry. They were delicious and also not to sweet tasting. Definitely returning.

Brand new location in Coney Island on Surf ave across from Nathans famous. Store is fully loaded with all the flavors. I’m sure they will do well this summer. Nice not having to go all the way to Fulton street for some velvet. You can now have Nathans and then some red velvet cake for dessert. Does not get much better than that!
