Normally, when a restaurant gets your order wrong, they would take away the dish and get you what you actually ordered. Not this place. The owner(she took our order) was abrupt, rude and kept insisting that we were wrong. To salvage the evening, we just stopped insisting and let the issue go. The food is delicious but the staff could be friendlier and more adept at speaking English. Half the time, it’s a struggle to communicate our order and there’s always that mild anxiety that they didn’t understand what was said. Also, beware when you are paying and expect any change back. It’s «cash only» and you HAVE to tell them that you want your change back… They just automatically assume that the extra is their tip. If the food wasn’t so great at this place, I would’ve boycotted them a long time ago based on the spotty service.

This place is better than the one on 86th. Employees here are friendly and don’t have a habit of yelling like at 86th. Food is goos too. I gave 4 because it’s a little difficult to find parking and wait might be a while depending on day. Subway station is a few blocks down, but bus runs through here too.

Expectations pretty low based on recent reviews, but my friends said it was one of their favorite Malaysian spots, so what’s to lose? I was expecting brusque treatment, but that was not the case. I felt welcomed and even had a few laughs with our server over the ridiculous mountain of garlic being hand peeled in the prep area! There are faster ways certainly, but the staff seemed to enjoy sitting and chatting over the laborious task. What were they doing with that much garlic, I think a lot of it ended up in our delicious water spinach. In addition to the excellent greens, the satay, thicker cut than expected, but flavorful and juicy and the Mee Siam spicy and funk stood out. See the awesome Lisa E.‘s review for additional commentary. Cash only, but really affordable.

I would give zero stars if possible. Prices have gone up while portions have become minuscule. I came to this location thinking it might be better than the stingy Brooklyn 86st location but I was very wrong. Pad Thai, asam laksa, and hainanese chicken were smaller and sub par but not the worst. My curry noodle soup looked and tasted nothing like curry. It was like a soy sauce soup base. Never again.

Ventured over after a gorgeous day at the Botanical Gardens with friends who adore Nyonya here and in Manhattan’s Chinatown as well. Despite some negative reviews, we all had agreed that the meal, service and value was outstanding. We started with some Roti Canai, hand made Indian pancake with a curry dipping sauce. The Roti was perfect… warm and soft. Also fantastic were the beef satay… small cubes of tender marinated meat grilled on skewers with a peanut sauce… out of this world !!! The Mee Siam was another hit… a mound of super thin noodles with shrimp and tofu in a delicious spicy Thai chili sauce studded with grounded peanuts. My favorite was the squid with onions and green peppers in a fiery sauce that went amazingly well over our order of water spinach sautéed in finely minced garlic. Every dish was simple yet unique and we left stuffed. The servers couldn’t have been nicer . We look forward to trying their NYC location.

This is RIDICULOUS. I’m going to tell something about how they treat their customers. Actually, I love the food. Because it is so close to my workplace, I always came here for lunch. My favorite dishes are fish head noodle soup, beef curry, and fried rice cakes. Sometimes I would ordered half Hainan chicken to take home. Service? Well, service is not the best, but what I need is only serving me the correct food and getting me the correct check. And I visited this place again for lunch today with my co worker. She ordered the fried rice and she also wanted some chili oil to go along with it. Her English is not very fluent(yes she is not Chinese either) and she said to the waiter that she would like some«oil hot sauce». The waiter looked at her like she just said something totally made no sense. Then i explained to him that she would like some chili oil. Then the waiter got us hot sauce, and he told us that there wasn’t any chili oil provided. Another waitress also came and confirmed that. After they both went away, I heard a loud laughter from the other end of the restaurant and those waitstaffs were actually joking about my co worker’s English.(Yes only me heard it, unfortunately I have very good hearing) I didn’t want to ruin my co worker’s day so I didn’t let her know about it. And speaking influent English might be awkward, laughing at the costumers will only awkward your own business. No more dining in at this place. They don’t deserve a tip.

While swimming through the sea of humanity on 8th Ave Bklyn, I rested and refueled at this bamboo oasis known as Nyonya. While everything looks good good that was being served around me, I highly recommend the Malaysian Curry dishes and the veggie dishes with Shrimp Paste(either okra or green beans). This time I opted for the Curry Me with Yung Tau Foo which is egg noodles in spicy coconut curry with veggies, tofu and minced fish($ 8). It had just the right level of spiciness to allow you to enjoy the flavor of the dish. As a compliment I had the okra on the side($ 11). Now that my appetite has been quenched, I am ready swim upstream back to the N train on 60th St.

Good food and service. A little pricey more than usual on seafood dishes. My wife prefers it more than me. Best Regards, Jimmy Wong VIPAUTONYC

Although I’ve had better Malaysian food, this is the closest location to home, so I visit frequently. However, the servers are very rude. Sarang Burong– Crispy fried taro bowl filled with chicken, shrimp, mushrooms, carrots, peppers, snow peas, baby corn, and cashews. I love this dish!($ 11.95) Spicy Thai Chicken– If you normally order the Hainanese chicken dish, I would definitely recommend ordering this with a side of Hainanese sauce instead. The chicken is topped with a flavorful sauce. Which makes the overall experience more pleasant. Despite the name, this dish isn’t spicy at all.($ 5.95) Crispy Pork Intestines– If you wash intestines thoroughly, the stinky scent should be at a minimum, but these were stinky! The taste was okay, but I’ve had better.($ 6.95) Kangkung Belacan– Water spinach drenched in shrimp paste sauce. It was pretty good.($ 9.95) Roti Canai(Indian Pancake) — I order this each time I visit. It’s always a pleasure.($ 2.95)

The service here was TERRIBLE. Reading the other reviews about the service here and I did not expect to get treated the same way. They start cleaning even before you leave the table. They start glaring at you when you ask for take out boxes. And they start coming to get your order even before you begin to look at the menu. I have this place a two star because the food was mediocre. I could taste all the sodium and saltiness after a few bites… I had to ask for more water.

Their food is 4 stars, but their service usually deserves 3. Compared to Redang a few blocks away, their food is significantly better. I always make sure to order the roti canai, my malaysian coffee that is very strong with its unique flavors that always tasted a little better after it’s a little diluted, and my hainese chicken. What I love about this place is that it’s great for family style, or for when you just don’t feel like sharing and piggying out on your own hainese chicken or noodles. My friends usually like the stir fried noodles with egg, or the prawn mee if you can handle spicy. My go to Malaysian place in Brooklyn, though I wish they would accept credit card!

I haven’t had Malaysian food in years, mostly because when I’m not a fan of spicy food which is a lot of what Malaysian food is. But you know what — decided to try again and it’s honestly wonderful comfort food. If you’re a fan of curry, definitely go for the roti. It’s not like Indian roti, which is thicker, but it’s thin and crispy, certainly a good accompaniment to the thick curry with a bit of chicken and potato. We also had the Hainanese chicken, which is a basically boiled chicken in soy sauce. If you’re not into chicken, don’t get this dish, because it’s literally a quarter or a half(definitely go for half, as it is only $ 2.00 more and so worth it) of chicken in soy sauce and a side of thai chili. We also had pineapple fried rice which unfortunately was not in a pineapple, but it was quite delicious and filled with salty chicken and sweet pineapple, probably canned, but a good mix of flavors. The Malaysian iced tea tastes like really aromatic and intense milk tea at Chinese bakeries, but was great for a humid, hot December day(who knew I would say that? It’s almost 70 degrees here in New York this week). The place is like any other Malaysian place — wooden décor(100% flammable if there was a fire), but very island-like vibe, which is great. I would come back again. I also didn’t think the service was awful, they were really nice and good with taking away our dishes and making sure our experience was good.

After my past experience at the other Nyonya location in Bath Beach(see my review), I was hesitant on trying this one. This is place is no better. The main thing that turned me off was the service. HORRIBLE! The waitress had trouble understanding English. I ordered a bowl of white rice as a side and she kept asking my if I wanted the coconut rice or the white rice. And when the food came, she came with both the coconut rice AND white rice AND as the audacity to ask me if I wanted coconut or white rice again. I ordered the Haianese Chicken. I had better. This was chewy. My boyfriend ordered the porkchop(King Pork Buff). It was mostly bones, no meat; and what little meat there was, it was tough and barely edible. The food was so bad that we decided to get our food to go. We got the check and the total came to $ 26. We put two $ 20 bills. The waitress asked us if we needed change. Duhhhhhh! Why would we give you a $ 14 tip for this kind of service!!! And here comes the cherry on top… When the other lady came back with our food in the doggy bag, there was a freaking bandaid on the bag! A F@$&!$ USEDBANDAID! We notified her and instead of apologizing to us… SHERIPPEDOFFTHEBANDAID and acted like nothing was wrong. We are reporting this to the Department of Health. This restaurant needs to be shut down!

Rude waitress and horrible packaging for my food. Juices just ffffing spillin everywhere. Never come here cuz I wont. So I went inside the dark gloomy restuarant with a few customers eat. They spoke chinese and knew english. I was ready to order for 5 minutes but when I said hey excuse in english and chinese they chose to ignore me. Finally a waiter told me wait wait. Then a waitress said to me to order quickly whatever I wanted. So if I order to go they dont get tips so I dont require respect. Previous when I was younger and gone there to sit down and eat they disrespected me and my friends. They thought teenagers wouldnt tip much and they ruin our ice cream cake. It was my friends birthday and we bought our own cake. We asked them to refrigerated it. When they served the cake at the end of the meal, it was on its side. Before we gave them the cake we checked it and it was just fine. I opened my order so I edited my review because I order one rice and curry and one spinach tofu, together 18.50. The spinach tofu was more expensive and they forgot to put tofu. So it is just spinach. Not a container full of spinach, just half full like they were planning to leave space for it but the waitress took it and gave it to me. My day is ruined. After working 8 hours, not feeling up for cooking. Lets pay other people to do it. And they make a bigger mess and rip me off.

Let’s preface this by saying that I have been going to this location for many years. At least ten. I grew up on 8th Ave and I know that Asians aren’t the best when it comes to customer service, and I expect VERY little. Like other reviews have said, the Indian bread has gone down in quality. It is extremely small and they barely give you half a bowl of curry to dip. Other dishes seemed rushed and not as good as it used to be. I agree with other reviewers that the service is absolutely TERRIBLE. I recently had dinner here with my family. We were a table of 10 and we ordered a lot of food. There was one server who was a middle-aged women with short hair and thick black glasses. She was rude and unhelpful. We had a table full of food, so we didn’t have much room to eat. When we had finished a few plates, we had asked her to clear off some things. She took two plates, walked off, and never came back. First of all, Asian places usually take the empty plates off without the customer having to ask. Second of all, she was LAZY and dismissive. Things just got worse toward the end. When we were near the end of finishing, she comes up to us all of a sudden and asks if we’re ready to leave and take the check. There was CLEARLY food on the plates, so she should’ve known we weren’t finished! And once again, she didn’t take any of the finished/empty plates. When we were finally done and asked for the check, she just STOODTHERE, hovering over my mom, who was paying. She was like a hawk and staring into my mom’s wallet. It is extremely rude to do that. She was looking at us like we were peasants that weren’t going to pay the bill. She treated us poorly and tried to rush us out. Our check was at least $ 150. We tipped her $ 15, even though she was horrible. I know that this location has gained some popularity and more white folks are eating here now. But my family has been going here for over a decade and I can say that we are NEVER coming here again. My grandparents, aunt, cousins, brother, sister, and my fiancé and I will NEVER come back. They cannot treat customers poorly and expect them to return. It is the people of 8th Ave that have supported their business all these years. They can’t treat long time patrons like garbage just because they gained a bit of notoriety with white people. HORRIBLE.

Was just here over the wkend and the service and food have really went downhill. There are new waitresses and they are clumsy and rude. They walk away from u when ure trying to order, when ure askin for the check and want something wrapped up they would shout and tell another worker to do it and speed off. They also drop things while cleaning up the tables. It was jus a horrible scene. It wasnt even crowded(only abt 6 – 7 tables of ppl) idk what they are rushing for. I used to love their prawn mee but this time the veggie did not taste like its been cooked long enough. As if they jus threw it in the hot soup and expect it to cook. The pork was thick and tasted bad. I didnt even finish half of my order. I usually finish almost the whole bowl. Terrible experience and its definitely the last straw. Goodbye.

Came here for a Monday lunch with my mom. Pros: — Out of all the Malay places I’ve been to the roti canai here tastes the best! — The Hainanese chicken tasted great — The place is large — The waitress we had was very polite, maybe because there weren’t a lot of people there Cons: — Cash only — It’s better to eat the food at the restaurant — the portions are larger than take out

Hmm… I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed Nyonya when I’ve been here several times and love the food. Note: I love the food, the service I am not a big fan of. But then again, reading the other reviews you have to prepare yourself and just understand that you come here to satisfy your taste buds. I really enjoy the roti canai, it is delicious and perfect combined with the curry sauce. Also, the garlic chicken is amazing! The skin so crispy and the meat so tasty and soft! Just thinking about it makes me want to come back here when I just had it two days ago.

My friend and her mom treated me for lunch one day. The restaurant is your typical Malaysian style restaurant. Cash only btw. If you come here during lunch I suggest coming a little early than expected. We came here just before the peak of lunch. Once it hits lunch hours that is when the customers will start filing in. This is really a family style type restaurant, so come with a few people to share the love. We order the Roti Canai, which had more of a crispy crunch than a soft bite. Overall 2⁄5 for that appetizer. Prawn Mee Soup was alright. It was spicy, but I tasted more of a hot and sour taste even it was suppose to be hot and spicy flavor. Cantonese Chow Fun was very flavorful. Lots of seafood and vegetables. The thick sauce was very tasty. Hainanese Chicken wasn’t moist enough in my taste. A little more on the dry side. Vegetables…hey if you going to go family style at least have some vegetables. Eat your greens. After eating all that, my mouth was really dry. I think they put a lot of MSG flavoring into the dishes. No bueno! Service is really shaky. They staff tried to take our food away before we were finish with the dishes. WTH! Subpar food and subpar service. I prefer the location in Chinatown/Little Italy.
