I have been a customer for almost 20 years. COuldn’t not ask for more professionalism, knowledge, skill, and comfort. I have referred family members and friends over the years, all of whom have remained customers.

This is my first time here and it is the most beautiful experience I have ever had with my locks. First, The lady who shampooed my hair took me to a whole different level by explaining every product, the process and gently but thoroughly massaging my hair at the same time. Then, my new stylist Sharene, after expertly coloring my hair, with a perfect color match, gave me expert advice on how to work with my hair at home as she twisted my hair and shared great tips about her homeland to enhance my cultural experience as a new Brooklynnite. I love my hair, this place and my whole experience. I am hooked on the love and expert service I received in this place. Hallelujah!

This happened to be the first natural hair salon I’ve been to since going natural. Unfortunately, I feel like my experience could have been better. The salon is located in a cute area with lots of small cafés, a wine shop, and a few restaurants. This place has a very African theme going. The color of the walls, exposed brick, and the décor are beautiful. However, there are NO mirrors. How this salon has been able to function without wall mirrors is beyond me, but very frustrating as I like to see what’s going on with my hair. The hair dressers are extremely nice. I was taken in last minute and received my service as soon as I walked through the door. I received an invigorating hair wash and scalp massage, and got my ends trimmed. The services were a bit pricey and I didn’t necessarily agree with their method of trimming. It wasn’t until I was about to leave when the stylist gave me hair advice. I probably won’t return, but this place seems to know what they’re doing with their dread hair clients. I saw some beautiful work being done to multiple heads! So I definitely suggest this place for someone looking for a relocking or a dread styling.

All the ladies here provide great customer service. Their skilled hands are sure to have you leaving the salon happy. I personally see Atim and she puts up with my shenanigans of making my locs look long in whatever style she decides on. Durma is the best at washing hair. Her pressure is just right. She frequently asks if you want more or less pressure. I simply love coming to this oasis. If you want to go to a place where everybody knows your name(queu the Cheers music) definitely come here. All stylists know eachother’s client’s names. Which makes it even more welcoming.

This is a lovely salon — just not for me(more on that in a moment). The shop is nicely appointed, love that they have books, rather than magazines, to read. The staff was very friendly and by 9:30am, the place was already filled with customers. My wash was fantastic — scalp massage, consistently checking if it was too hard or itching. My stylist didn’t arrive until part-way through my wash and thus did not see my hair when I came in. I have curly coily, classic 3c hair. As a first time visitor to the salon, I thought there would have been more conversation about my hair before she started. But to be fair, I only scheduled a wash and trim, so what was there to talk about. Apparently a lot! After the trim(btw, who blows out hair and trims it dry?!?), she asked what I «wanted done» with my hair, and I said I am a wash and go girl, so she said she would re-wet my hair and put some curl crème in. What she did was soak my hair in some leave in conditioner, a ton of oil, and put me under the dryer having done some two strand twists — I think. The one oddity of the salon — NOMIRRORS — ANYWHERE! Now, I certainly could have asked more questions or suggested things be done differently, but I was enjoying the experience and if what she was doing ended up looking great, then it’s all good. In the end, I looked like I had been in bed for two days with the flu. I did not know anyone could take out the coils and add frizz to my hair in such an alarming way. In trying to fix it, she brought over a soaking wet terry cloth towel and ran it through my hair to get some of the oil out. And as any good naturalista knows, terry cloth is like running Velcro through your hair. Any vague hint of curl definition was gone. She finally offered to rinse it out, but after 2.5 hours at the salon, I figured I would cut my losses. She recognized that this was not a good experience for me and put notes in their system about what to do differently next time. I appreciate the customer service, but would have appreciated it more if she had asked 2 hours prior. It wasn’t until I was leaving the salon that I realized that every single solitary person there had locs, braids, or twists(or a TWA). Somewhere in the Universe, black women with natural hair have been divided into two groups — those that loc/braid/twist and those who don’t. This salon does not cater to the latter.

I was referred to this salon by a friend. I was looking for a salon that would focus on treating my hair instead of just washing and styling my locs. I made a 7pm appointment with Atim. They called me the day before to confirm my reservation. I arrived 10 minuted before my reservation and was immediately greeted by the shampoo girl. She immediately walked me over to the shampoo station and began washing my hair. She did put an oil treatment in it but I forgot to ask for the name of it. Throughout the wash she would ask me if the water temperature was fine, and if she should add more pressure. What a sweetheart! I was then seated in Atim’s seat. She introduced herself to me. I informed her that my locs are ALWAYS dry. She asked me if I was tender headed(I am) and started retwisting my hair. She didn’t use any clips(Hallelujah!), she didn’t over twist, and it was painless. I was more so happy that she palm rolled my locs from scalp to ends instead of just the new growth. My hair began a relationship with her hands. The whole process was painless. She also oiled my scalp and hair. While I sat under the dryer she asked me about styling choices. I opted to go with a style included with the price. I asked questions about maintenance, and she also reminded me to use a satin cap. Prompt? Yes, Professional? Yes, Pricey? Yes. I may not go there every month but I will aim for 6x a year.

I love going to Nu Wave… The ladies there are professional and courteous. They started my locs in October 2008 and I have been loc’d since. The salon is clean and smells great. They are knowledgable about natural hair/locs. They can create a hairstyle from what you describe that is phenomal. I would recommend them to anyone.

I only go to this salon because I’m not confident that any other salon will be able to handle an aggravating style that they convinced me to get. I have fake hair twisted onto my hair to give it some length while it locks. First off I got this style because they said it would hold up better in water as I’m a regular swimmer. Come to find out, if I even get caught in the rain these twists slip right out with hair falling embarrassingly all around me. I could go on for days about how misleading their advice was. The next issue is that they consistently speak to me like I’m not paying them to do my hair. The offer up lots of condescending remarks and mucho attitude. They speak to me like I am their child.(And when I say they, I’m speaking of 3 of the 5 people there.) Also, they have a habit of not telling you the price for things until after it’s done. Honestly I dread going there but I’m stuck with them until my hair completely locks. I would not recommend my worst enemy there. I’ve deterred the rest of my family from going there. They do a good job, their salon smells + looks great, but they’re overpriced and offer a horrible customer experience. Go at your own risk.

This is hands down. one of the best natural hair salons in the greater New York City area. The service can be pricey, but it is worth it as it can last, nourishes your tresses and looks phenomenal. I went in in December to get a two strand twist style done. I was AMAZED by the caliber of service. the shampoo was awesome(please have cash to tip your shampoo girl. It is a different person than your stylist and because it was my first time, I was unprepared for this) after the shampoo was over, the conditioner was placed in my hair, my whole head was combed out with the shampoo in and then parted and sectioned off in twists. THEN the conditioner was rinsed out while the fat twists were still in my head. After which oil was applied and I was placed under the dryer. I haven’t had my hair prepared so well since my mama was doing it. They also offer several cool deep conditioning options, but I didn’t choose one when I went so I can comment on the quality of those. In general though, six weeks later I am impressed by the texture and care of my hair from their last styling. They styled my hair dry which I was not used to and a little apprehensive about(I am generally am pretty antiheat) but it turned out beautifully and lasted literally up until today. I am a teacher and set an appointment for after work so I was DOG tired and didn’t speak clearly to my stylist about what we would be doing. There was a discrepancy in the cost, but they ultimately were incredibly kind and knowledgeable through a communication failure on both of our parts. It is always nice to experience the customer is always right as a tenet of a business that you enjoy supporting. I would highly recommend this salon and have made it my monthly go to for my hair maintenance. Can’t wait to see how I grow with them!

I wish I could try this place but they refuse to do my hair! Not only did I get attitude at the front desk, but the lady told me that they don’t take care of natural hair that isn’t locked! Not only that, but she reccommeded I either go to the salon across the street for a blow out and trim(a hell no in the naturally kinky world btw) or go to a barbershop! WTF?! Am I being exiled because I’m nappy!!! LIKEYOU??? Just wash and cut it bitch! A four Month wait list? Are you kidding? So people with locks have to walk around all fuzzy in the front till you’re ready? Oh, and they cost an arm and a leg to boot! Bullshit. Okay, I might be hating a bit but this is my Crown and Glory bitches!
