I am true sad to see this close. On a nice day it was a great place to meet up with friends, have a drink, grab some good food and chill with great dj music. It was a nice retreat from the urban of the city. I guess the price you pay for gentrification and the need for just another luxury condo.

I love this place! It is radical with its variety and selection. I ended up going to Maharlika and having the most delicious linguisa(might be spelling this incorrectly, sorry!) on garlic rice! It was so tasty! I am so going back. I also so the art of joe coffee there and dub pies. My hubby ended up getting a delicious spicy pie made of chicken. I also spied and saw clothing stores as well as some art stores. What I meant to say it is not just a place for quick tasty treats but also there for magic shows, live performances, and also picnic tables to eat your food instead of hauling it several blocks to a local park. It is located near the Q line at DeKalb Avenue and R train Metrotech-Lawrence Street. You will see shipping containers with businesses inside them. And perhaps a ton of trees and grassy flora. Then you will know you are in the right place. :) The only drawback is that there are no physical bathrooms just porta potties and did I mention bring some purell because they have an empty purell container in most of the potties.

What a surprise! I am usually in this area once a month and I was pleasantly surprised to see the Dekalb Market open late one evening as I had trekked into Brooklyn. I was a bit hungry heading to this area and wasn’t looking forward to being in this ‘hood…because I don’t know much about eats in the area. However… Dekalb Market provides so many different and eclectic and not to mention cheap dining options… donuts, sammiches, BBQ, wings, italian, ice cream, coffee, booze! You name it and it’s there. Lots of little shop/boutiques set up as well. DJ spinning music from above it all… Ah…this is the new Brooklyn? Me likes.

I love the Dekalb Market! I literally watched it from Birth(initial construction) to Now(repairs, upgrades) all from my office window! At first, it was a mystery. But, once it opened, I was impressed. There is soOo much diversity here. Little shops great for gift shopping. Food carts with nice goodies, coffees, sandwiches and home cooking. If you sign up to their newsletter, you’re constantly up to date with free and paid events. Too bad this place is temporary. Apparently, a building will be under construction at this site soon. I wonder if Dekalb Market will blossom to a new location, or just go? In that case, take as much advantage as you can. It won’t last forever.

This is pretty much down the street and across the street from JayZ’s new stadium, in Brooklyn. You will not be disappointed if you come to Dekalb Market. Bring cash, try the gelato & the gourmet tacos. This has gotto be one of many gems in New York. I can spend all day here(but blow about a hundred bucks). The people are awesome, the ambience is contagiously joyful, the food is organic & healthy, parking can be a challenge, but you CANNOT be disappointed with your experience at the Dekalb Market. if you haven’t come at least once and you live in NY — WTF, seriously??? Go now, make plans this weekend, regardless of the commute it’s worth it. You’ll enjoy yourself and get some great food.

Awesome little market located in no man’s land in downtown Brooklyn. Certain sections of the area are a tad rough, but if ultimately once you get thru them you feel a bit safer :) At first sight it looks like a private lot with storage containers(which it technically is), but then when you peak thru you see that there’s a bunch of vendors and a large seating area. There’s vendors for Caribbean food and desserts and surprisingly a filipino restaurant I’ve been to also had a booth there, Maharlika. Unfortunately I didn’t get to spend much time here, but it’s a nice spot where you can spend a few hours chatting, drinking and eating with friends. There are plenty of picnic tables for anyone that wants to spend an extended amount of time here. There were also a few vendors not offering food, but no one was really paying attention to them as most of the visitors were there for just the food.

Driving past Dekalb Avenue I noticed several storage containers with mannequins(or something resembling one) sitting on top and wondered on and off a few times just what was going on. When a friend finally told me about Dekalb Market, I was intrigued by this concept of an open air marketplace where storage containers were turned into shops and restaurants. As Albert W. pointed out, it felt like something out of a dystopian science fiction novel — which is cool in my book. The containers make up a bulk of the shops, with restaurants ranging from buffalo wings, to cupcakes, to panini, vegetarian fare, baked goods and donuts. Towards the back are more shops, but focusing on items like handmade soaps, jewelry and toys. Spread throughout the market are tables under canopies that sell a variety of items including food, jewelry and yes, more handmade soaps(I dig’em so these stand out in my mind). Off the the right are gardens for locally grown produce. It’s a delightful sight overall. On this particular day I was lucky enough to sample a nice variety of items. The buffalo wings are fresh made, crisp and tasty(but not super hot). The donuts are also freshly made complete with sugar on top that made them extra sweet and delightful. I also had a wonderful vegetarian kale curry stew at one of the tables in the center of the market. I also tried some tacos from a stand near the garden and while the meat inside was full of flavor and tasty, the outer wrap could have had more flavor. The atmosphere here is friendly and one of the cooks solicited my feedback on her dish(the kale curry) and one of the soap vendors told me the tale of how he got into the business. This is also a fun place to dog watch as people bring their fluffy critters with them all the time. Overall I found my experience at Dekalb Market delightful and I look forward to a future trip!

I had an awesome time at Dekalb Market. At around 5pm on a Saturday, we were able to snag a picnic table that fit about 8 people. The DJ was poppin’, people were dancing, beer was flowing, and the food was good. My gosh, the garlic rice at Maharlika was to die for. You also have to get a fish taco from Mazie’s Bites(avoid the soggy corn on the cob though) and try the rice balls from the Arancini Brothers. The little donuts from Cuzin’s Duzins melt in your mouth and the hot wings from Dekalb Wings were done just right. Didn’t get a chance to browse the shops though. Overall, the whole concept of this market fits the bill for the type of place I want to support. Recycled shipping containers turned into stores, fostering a community in an otherwise desolate, empty lot, and addressing food justice issues with the Food 360 project… all things I must praise!

DeKalb Market just might be the best kept secret around here. For one thing, it’s in the middle of nowhere. Well, it’s actually remarkably easy to get to… it’s just not in a spot you’d generally wander by. But when you finally convince your friends that you’re not dragging them down the deserted street to murder them, they’ll be happy they believed you.* Because DeKalb Market is basically like your own personal beer garden. Only instead of being limited to sausages and sauerkraut(which I do love), there are all sorts of fantastic food options. So here’s what you do: Post up at a picnic table and drink Sixpoint in the sunshine, and when you get a little hungry, walk around and decide what deliciousness you want to eat that day. Maybe Maharlika’s BBQ pork skewers, or their longanisa hot dog that I’m head over heels in love with? Perhaps the carbonara option over at Arancini Bros, or Mayhem & Stout’s braised beef sandwich? How about Dub Pies, Pasticcio, Cheeky Sandwiches or one of the seven different grilled cheeses available? After you’ve eaten your fill(hopefully sharing with friends so you can try a number of different things), you can chase the savory with the sweet: sea salt brownies at Robicelli’s(when they’ve got them, GETTHEM), Culture Yogurt, Cuzin’s Dozen… And during all this eating and drinking, you can rock out to the surprisingly awesome DJs they book, and enjoy the outdoors. Good beer, good food, good friends and sunshine? All is right with the world. Oh, almost forgot. They also have a lot of shops. And although I can appreciate the fact that there are tons of local vendors hawking their wares out of shipping containers… I’m just not really in the market for anything that isn’t food and booze. However, it’s a rare thing in NYC to be able to wander around an outdoor market with a beer in your hand. So take a look. You might want to buy something, because as everyone knows… alcohol leads to good decisions. __________ *Which in turn will lull them into trusting you when you actually do decide you’ve had enough of their snide, backhanded comments. Just kidding. I love you guys.

This place is laid out like a flea market, only inside shipping containers. Not a bad way to layout a set of stores, in an empty parking lot that otherwise might sit idle. From artisan shopping, clothes, jewelry, and gifts to plenty of food vendors of all stripes, this is a great stop. I was checking out a friend’s place where he sells Kombucha, and stopped off at Cheeky Sandwiches while there. Loved the layout, it’s a sort of hidden gem. BrooklyN!

Hidden gem in downtown Brooklyn. Looks like a junk yard from the outside but don’t be fooled ‘cos all the good stuff is in the outside ;) Best to come here during the weekend when it’s more lively. Great outdoorsy flea market that contains homemade goods from small vendors. Tad pricier but that’s the cost you pay for originality, right? Food market is located in center. The food from the vendors are amazing. The Beta B from Nile Valley was delicious but a tad more on the expensive side(I believe it was $ 7?). Good place to chill on a lazy weekend day.

Cue the rain and cue the night and you’ll have a scene straight out of Blade Runner. Though I don’t think I noticed a ramen place(there should be!), there were tons of places offering stuff with cheese in it. And who doesn’t love cheese if they’re not tolerant of it. In short, a lot of good eats to choose from. A lot of little shops — buy fancy soap if that moves you. You might get fat coming here though — so fair warning. =D

Dekalb Market looks super-cool: all the ‘shops’ are made out of old freight crates and the location gives it a very craftsy feel. They have a wonderful food court area and cool little shops that sell everything from soaps to tee shirts and everything in between. The only thing is I didn’t love any of the wares. My $ 4 Tea by Tiffany wasn’t great, and the vegan chocolate chip cookies were awful. We were searching for a gift for my mother-in-law, and the best option was a scented candle that, in all honesty, didn’t have the best scent. Cool concept, but the actual shops could use a little bit of work.

This is my spot. Been going there since shortly after it opened(when there were only a handful of businesses there) and have been digging its growth. My favorites from jump have been Brooklyn Beats(great vinyl there, and it’s run by the cats from the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival), Tea By Tiffany(she just hooked me up with this tea called ‘Fire’ that killed my burgeoning cold, not to mention their fantastic ice tea), the cupcake place Robicelli(expensive but so damn good), and the vegan spot right next to it whose name I can’t remember but they have the best veggie patties, which are pricy but they have a good selection. It was a few weeks before I tried Joes Coffee and Cuzin’s Donuts, but they are dope as well — great product and prices which is my fav combo. The design of the Market is actually a fantastic draw, so aesthetically the spot is great to look at. The vendors that have tables(instead of the canisters) on Sundays have stuff I’d actually buy compared to the clothes that are sold there on a daily — nothing personal, they’re just not my style, and not really marketed to men. All in all, I look forward to keep supporting Dekalb Market. Though I never think to check-in here(gotta correct that).

Fun facts about Dekalb Market: Open 7 days a week. Located just a couple blocks away from that madness that is Fulton St, at Dekalb and Flatbush Aves. If you’re walking down Flatbush you cannot miss the entrance to the market… just look for the crazy colored sidewalk and walls. The lot, filled with old shipping containers, is a combination of food/drink vendors and local artisans. Artisans are there daily selling beautiful homemade jewelry, bags, and artwork. Rumor has it that currently there are only about ½ the normal amount of vendors at the Market because of the change in weather… hopefully this will change as it gets closer to the holidays. The food section of the market has a «beer garden» type of feel to it with several food shops and a couple dozen picnic tables. Should you go? Yes! I went recently and came home with two beautiful necklaces. Definitely looking forward to going back.

NOW I have a reason to get off on the Dekalb Stop… You know when you were a kid and you played with legos? You would make all sorts of things out them like cars, rockets and ships. I would make stores and shops out of them. This is like seeing«my concept» as a kid a REALITY. Shipping containers as stores and food shops? HELL to the YES! The Dekalb Market is located right when you get out of the train station onto Flatbush Ave. It’s very easy to spot and you can hear the music that’s being spun by the DJ. This place is open 7 days a week. It’s easy to get to and the items they sell are really interesting. Once you go in you will see some stands with an array of handmade crafts. From Jewelry, handbags, lamps and even terraniums. If you like one of a kind things. You will love it here. Not only do you have outdoor shops, but you also have an outdoor Food Court. You have a selection of Teas, sandwiches, Hot dogs and even Grilled Cheeses. My personal favorite is Maharlika. They have a shop here that serves Longadogs. Which are Filipino Sausages on a bun. Really GOOD! You want some BEER? They sell beer here… My favorite combination is Shopping, Food and BEER!!! I love the concept of this outdoor shopping/eating gallery. You will see local vendors that take pride in the work they do. Take home a piece of Brooklyn at the Dekalb Market. For more info on hours, events and what’s new at the market:

On a sunny Sunday morning, I was in the mood for a walk in the neighborhood and this was on the to-do list. I walked a few blocks and on a busy stretch of Flatbush, I found this outdoor market. The concept is unique and most of the stores are housed in old shipping containers. I saw the word TRITON on many of the store buldings. I like the industrial feel and I really like the idea of recycling things for other uses. Dumpster pools are also along the same line of thinking. Since it was quite early, most of the stores were not open yet. I was able to get some excellent iced coffee from Joe’s. I also got a tres leches cupcake from the flagship Robicelli store. They have many food vendors here, but most weren’t open yet. They also have many retail vendors here selling apparel and jewellery. 3rd Ward also has a community garden here. I will definitely be back to browse the shops and also to have some food. They are also participating in Fashion’s Night Out and salsa on Wednesday nights. This would be a great place for a date or just to hang out with friends. A neat concept, and I love that it is right in the ‘hood!

I had been wondering what the deal was with all the empty freight containers that were piled up in a lot next to the Dekalb N/Q/R station. Walking to the subway on my way to see my sister in Greenwich Village I saw Deklab market had opened and made a point to go there this past weekend. Sunday morning we took the dog there to explore and grab brunch. Like Caitlin M says, this place has major major potential and for it’s first week open it’s bustling. After walking around, checking out the shops and mingling with some fellow neighborhoodies we ordered sandwiches from Cheekys. Both the egg and cheese and the chicken sandwiches on buttermilk biscuits were delicious and will realign your food point of view. They’re just a tad pricey, at $ 4.50 for the egg and cheese and $ 6.25 for the chicken but well worth it to try and as a treat once in a while. I’m really exited to see this place develop and discover new vendors as it fills in. If you’re curious about visiting Dekalb Market, definitely go. You’ll be glad you did. oh and p. s. It’s puppy friendly & they have free wifi. woot!

I LOVE Dekalb Market. It’s a short walk from my apartment and I’ve been there three times since it opened a few weeks ago. The vibe is excellent. Very relaxing, but fun. The DJ’s are there during the weekends spinning/mixing great songs — kinda retro /old school, but I’m an 80s baby, so I enjoyed every moment. The set up is great with the shipping crates turned into restaurants and shops. It’s a great place to bring your family, hangout with a group of friends, or bring a date. Trust me… I’ve done all three. There is a covered seating area with picnic-like tables. And yes, strangers share tables. it’s great. The BEST thing about Dekalb Market is the food. Rumor has it they’re going to start delivering soon… perhaps not all of their food vendors, but some. I went to the grilled cheese spot — Mrs. Dorsey’s — and seriously had the best grilled cheese ever. There’s nothing I love more than comfort food with an innovative twist. I intend on trying each one of their five or so selections… but I need to watch my waistline. Either way… I had the A.B.C. grill cheese… it’s a grilled in a cinnamon butter and filled with gooey, tasty cheddar cheese, applewood bacon and crisp candied applies. I loved the texture and it was so delicious. I can’t wait to try the other varieties. Mazie’s International Soul is AMAZING. I had the jerk chicken and it was well cooked and very moist. It’s not a spicy jerk, but a smoky jerk. The flavors and subtle, but not bland. And don’t you get me started on the Mac n’ Cheese. Oh My Goodness. When I had it this past Saturday, it was solid. When I came back on Sunday, it was even better — perhaps the best Mac n’ Cheese I’ve ever had. I tried to get some Jerk Chicken also, but it was sold out. :(And… to be honest… I left work early today hoping to have Mazie’s for dinner and seeking to avoid yesterday’s dilemma of sold out entrees. Unfortunately, Mazie’s wasn’t open. I was devastated, but slightly grateful to be saving myself from my impending Mazie’s addiction. The cupcake place… a name I can’t remember… just wasn’t my thing. I have 3 – 5 Crumbs cupcakes on a weekly basis… so I really love cupcakes. These, although creative in their combinations fell a little flat in the taste department. Also, I’ve never been a fan of buttercream and the icing on these cupcakes is just as tall as the cupcake. I had the Banana Foster and threw it away. Trust me… me throwing away a cupcake is a huge statement. My roommate, last weekend brought home a CHICKENANDWAFFLESCUPCAKE. It was a monstrosity. Fried chicken cutlets on a cupcake. I couldn’t do it, it was just too weird. I also checked out Tiffany’s Tea, which was pretty good. There were a fairly broad variety of teas with innovative flavors. I had the Lenny Kravitz, which is their version of an Arnold Palmer and it was very very good. Overall, Dekalb Market is a must see. Bring your family and friends and feast, while bopping your head to great music. I will definitely be a regular.

This place has potential. And by potential, I don’t mean that in a pitying way. It’s just simply too premature for this place to be all that it can be as it’s just started up. My friend and I swung round midday during the week and it was pretty vacant in terms of people and vendors. They had a few vintage/boho clothing stores open, a smattering of food vendors and a nice lively beat going from a radio booth. They also had a nice big open space filled with picnic tables under a stretch of tent which makes the whole space feel very communal and open. I can’t wait for this place to really get going because once it does, this place will definitely be a hit!
