I’ve managed bands in New York for 10 years and I’ve been to every recording studio around. I recommend exactly one of them to my and all other artists: Bushwick Studio. The studio itself rests comfortably between a state-of-the-art edifice and a self-built home. But, as great as the control room, the live room, the vocal mics, the board and every other piece of equipment in the house is, it’s the proprietor of the joint, Josh Kessler, who will make you recording experience special and your final product ideal. Kessler is not only the most gifted engineer I’ve come across, he is not only the owner of some of the best gear one could possibly have, but he puts extraordinary care into every stage of the process. Josh also creates a uniquely-productive but relaxed and welcome atmosphere. It’s become almost a second home for me and the artists with whom I work, and I’d have to say that any band recording anywhere else may very well be making a mistake.

I’ve done two projects to Bushwick Studio and was very happy with our choice both times. The collection of new and vintage equipment Josh put together, and continues to hone and develop, is fantastic. Bushwick Studio is on my shortlist of studios for any recording project in NYC.

The beautiful thing about music as an art form is that it is inexpensive to obtain and the finest works sell for exactly the same price as the junk. You can buy Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde or you can buy any album by Creed for the same ten bucks. The downside of this is that it also means that just about anyone can go out there and make an album. There are limitless studios, instruments, and musicians with which to work. Yet for some reason, in music, certain acts rise above all the others and have millions of fans while others are left playing their records for friends and family. The industry yields a very uneven distribution of success. I believe this is because all truly great music requires a person of near perfect judgment to play an integral role in its creation. Setting off in search of these masters of craft is either a doomed pursuit or one that results in the rarest of finds. Josh Kessler is the sole proprietor of this studio, which he treats like his home. Because it is. His records span grunge rock to orchestral soundtracks. It’s a waste of time for me to recount his equipment list here(see the website) because that’s not what makes music hum. Anyone can buy any piece of equipment. It is the operation from brain to extremity that generates a sound that generates a feeling. In this function, Josh is chief, professor, and guru. $ 800 day rate including engineer for recording or mixing $ 100 by the hour Like I said: in music, the masterpieces sell at the same rate as the refuse.
