The only thing redeemable about this school what the teachers of the photography program. Everything about the school with an absolute living nightmare.
The financial department we’re cheeky salesman, and rotten to the core. He receive bribes and kickbacks from the things they got me to sign up for, on my own tab, without my permission, in which they got the line their pockets with, while I’m still paying for it.
The Career Services Department was even more of a joke. Promising students at the school’s reputation had a far reach into the working world of the Arts, and they had a sterling reputation to back it up. Come to find out, the courier service department was disrespectful, and uneducated the job market themselves, never once offering any will help in finding a job for us outside of school. Even is going as far as offering this job that JCPenney and Home Depot as a reputable employers for college education. An expense paid for that was useless.
The school offered no real dorms, and often were under Code as far as safety and health concerns go. They were highly expensive dorms for how deplorable and disgusting they actually were.
In our general education classes, teachers would often never show up for the classes that we paid to be there for. As well, the material they were educating us on, had nothing to do with the field of study that we were actually covering.
I’m a 28 year old who has $ 150,000 in student loan debt for a photography degree from this school, with over $ 45,000 of that being interest in the two and a half years that occurred while I was still in school. My payments are over a $ 1000 a month, I’m which the school said Sallie Mae offered help and easy ways to pay back. We received no consolidation whatsoever after we were promised lower, income based, percentage repayments through the school.
The school has practically ruined the lives of my fellow students, myself, and most importantly, my family. My family shouldn’t have to suffer this much from me just wanted to go to college to get a better education, Which, this school did not provide.
I’m so very fortunate that the school was shutting down, & I hope this is a permanent continuation of what’s to come for EDMC. I can only hope for my fellow classmates sake and mine, that we will see justice for the injustice we received from this for profit tyrant.

The graphic design program at this school is spotty at best. Most of the teachers I had were wonderful people and I did learn things, but ultimately not the skills employers are actually looking for. Also astronomically expensive especially in comparison to the quality of education. I should have just gone to community college and become a web developer. Five years later and I’m still drowning in loans and without a graphic design job. This school is NOT WORTH IT

The educators are AMAZING at least in the Interior Design/​architecture program and at least when I attended from 2008 – 2013. It’s too bad they work for such a greedy uncaring school! I got a bachelor’s of science degree here and all the students say this school has the best educators but everything else is weak! They guarunteed help with job placement after graduation and that was a joke; i found all my employment completely on my own! I do feel like I got a quality education thanks to professors who work in the field having major project accomplishments, so they taught me hands on learning, but for the money I paid you would think the campus experience and resources would’ve been better!!! Thank God they are closing so they don’t rob any other student of the full college experience. 3 stars for the educators.

Just burn your money instead. And while you are at it, find some nice teachers and burn their reputations.
This place is heinous. It should be shut down, because it is a racket.
They take great amounts of your money, or the governments money. In return, you get LESS than you can get from a week of browsing tutorials on the web. In fact, for the digital media classes they don’t even pretend, they sign you up for the very low end online tutorials provider «dig​i​tal​tutors​.com». If you really want that level of training, you can save a fortune by just signing up for it at home on your own.
A fair number of the teachers at NEIA are actually talented. But NEIA manages to squander that and extract the very worst from even their best. Mis-​casting faculty to teach pointless and worthless classes, with insane and irrelevant requirements.
However, a good percentage of the teachers are destructively misinformative. Many of them are the direct result of the school it self, going from failing to transition into the workforce to teaching at NEIA and passing along further disinformation and cluelessness.
It is hard not to be completely offended by the level of disinformation and misrepresentation that is happening in this ‘institution’.

As an Audio Production student I was once excited about attending and pursuing a career. As an Alumni I now realize I’ve wasted money by coming here. Once you get your degree if you don’t get a job in your field it’s worth absolutely nothing. I usually tell people don’t bother applying and invest in a more general Degree. You’re paying them 40k to learn a trait most learn in a basement for free.

There is no proper way to review this school — it’s a miserable place. There is a reason why the government is suing the Art Institute corporation.

What appeals to many people here is the major variation, as I can whole heartily say after attending it for three years I was GLAD to transfer out and go to a real university.
First and foremost, the faculty is quite possibly a joke or non-​existent. There were a few wonderful professors there and the rest were very uninterested, underpaid and no where to be found. On my last year, I had to have my classes pushed back two semesters because my prerequisite classes were NOT being offered. The reason being is there was no teacher to teach it. Really? For 40k a year that was the reason?
Money wise, this school is not for a hardworking individual or a financially struggling family. It’s a «I have or my parents have lots of money to blow and I’m bored» kind of school.
It’s expensive and most federal offices won’t cover it, I needed private loans and due to a dishonest Financial Aid Supervisor at the NEIA office, my social security number was tampered with and she applied for 10+ loans claiming, «Well your original loans didn’t cover your existing classes.» First off, when you get FA, it gives you the okay to register for classes as they are paid for and you are ready to attend them. Due to her carelessness my credit was completely botched hitting pings of seriously 10 separate loans to cover one semesters classes. I am still fixing this issue and it’s been 5 years. It’s a nightmare and I detest that woman very much as a result, I will spare her the humiliation of publicly revealing her name but avoid their offices.
In a legal sense I have been fighting for justice but been pushed away due to ignored calls by the staff of the office.
Lastly, they should be spending their money on your equipment not their pockets — it’s a technology oriented school, my machines should be top of the line and my software updated. I don’t think it’s difficult to do given how much tuition is. They add new rooms and offices and even signs, but they don’t pay for teachers or learning tools.
I had a terrible experience at this college and find most of my previous classmates either transferred out or were forced to drop out due to financial or curriculum issues. I had to pay a final fee of 3k from a returned loan to finally get my transcript so I could get out.
Don’t go here. They are stealing your money for mediocre to terrible education, you can seriously get 10x the education for a quarter of the price if you go to a state school, not to mention federal funding.

2004 Associates Degree in Digital Media Production (TV/​Radio).
Simply put, where it was a moderately expensive but staffed with competent teachers then, today it is outrageously expensive, predatory, and ill-​staffed.
Many of the pros that I worked with (practically all of them worked — at the least — freelance in the industry) have either left or, as happened today, been laid off. The parent company of the school is being sued for BILLIONS (with a B) for fraud. The only «perk» is having access to the labs and cameras — but even then, you could take a quarter of your tuition and buy all the equipment you’d need.
This is not a place of higher learning. This is a for-​profit institution. No screening to weed out lesser qualified students. It is all about getting asses in seats and getting revenue.
And do not let any admissions counselor (sales-​person) try to convince you their school has an «excellent job placement program». It’s a lie. Here, or anywhere. It is not their responsibility to get you a job (and no employer in the industry is going to say «Hey, this person needed their school’s help to get a job, let’s give them one»… you need to fight for yourself.). Despite what they tell you, it’s a gimmick, and a lie.
If you are thinking of enrolling in this school having read the scores of negative reviews on this site and others, you are exactly the dummy they are hoping to snag.

Whoever wrote that last positive review, definitely works here or was paid to do it.
The most shady admissions practices you will ever encounter. It is a business, and they know that once they get you in they have their money and that’s that. Admissions reps turnover – don’t even get me started. Ethically, not many people can withstand working here.

I could have spent the last 3 years working a full time job, saving money for my future, and sharpening my skills at the same time. Instead, I chose not to do the research and I have a $ 100,000+ loan on my shoulders, 3 years wasted, and the ongoing stress and anxiety this school has brought me.
As others have said, this is a FOR PROFIT school, meaning they only care about the money in their pockets. The higher-​ups at the school and at EDMC could care less what you do. Their job is to get you in, take your money, and get you out with a degree that is argued to be useless. They’ve even been sued for fraud in 2010 which made their stocks drop from $ 25 down to $ 3.50.
The teachers are great, but the curriculum is so broken they can’t teach to their full extent. They’re dragged down by the way the classes are set up and the lack of new equipment and space.
Everything that was advertised in this school when I enrolled is now gone. ²⁴⁄₇ access to labs is gone. The tri-​semester course load is gone. One of the buildings is gone. The company is losing so much money in lawsuits and dropouts that soon enough they won’t be able to afford new software for the computer labs.
If you’re reading this, it means you’re doing more work than I have. You’re researching different schools and seeing what students say. Unfortunately, I never researched schools. Make the next step and avoid this school as much as possible. /​do not believe anything the recruiters say or advertise. You’ll probably lose it in a year or so.

I’m a senior in the Media Arts and Animation program at this school. I have great grades and I love our major. However, your experience at this school most likely will range anywhere from a mixed bag to a complete and utter nightmare. I have been very unhappy here, BUT — to be certain, I have learned a lot of really cool stuff, grown as an artist tremendously and made myself exponentially more versatile and marketable than I ever would have dreamed of three years ago.
This is a for-​profit school that is branch of the controversial Ai network. The Institutes are frequently involved in all sorts of lawsuits and whatnot and a lot of the time it can feel like you’re going to school in a bit of a cataclysm.
However, the education you will receive here, at least in the MAA major, is top-​notch. The professors are excellent. What they don’t tell you right up front is that our major is very 3d and video game-​centric, and a lot of people who just kind of like to draw end up very disillusioned or even plain screwed when they reach their Junior and Senior year. Also, they are really not screwing around in the grade books here — do not come here expecting to have fun expressing yourself like an art student in a stupid Hollywood movie or something. If you don’t love to work long, long hours on your art, you won’t do well. At all. Sacrifices will have to be made to succeed.
One reason this school receives a lot of whiny, dismal reviews is sadly the fault of its broken admissions practices. Admissions counselors are, as far as I can tell, here to hook in everyone and anyone they can. Lots of people wander into a very difficult and demanding major totally unprepared for what they’re about to get themselves into (not to mention how much they’re going to end up owing in loans if they don’t pull it together, and fast).
You will learn very revelatory and awesome things about your interests here, if you are driven and know what you’re getting into first and know what you want to do. The professors are very accomplished and respected individuals from their fields One of our professors was the animation director for Pan’s Labyrinth, which is just plain cool.
Another one of our 3d animation teachers was this year’s Autodesk Master, which means the leading company in 3d technology called him their #1 user and designer — in the world. He’s not an easy professor, as you can imagine, but he’s also really awesome and vastly informative and helpful if you come prepared. Show up without your work done, and you may find him, or most of the other professors, suddenly become deaf. Which I like, a lot. Most of the people who have made me most unhappy here also screw up regularly, so it makes me smile when the teacher doesn’t give a shit about their stupid sob stories.
Nobody could fairly say that the education here isn’t outstanding. It just most likely comes with a bitter taste of many unpleasant experiences along the way, and a steep, steep fall if you screw up.
Oh, also, don’t get in trouble here. Really. Leave the bong at home.

The only thing I value from this school is the students I met. Couple of the professors as well, but the number is pretty small. I believe that school’s should enable and engage young and talented people, not restrict them by having broken equipment or generally just not enough resources. In AiNE’s case, the resources were extremely poor. I can’t speak for audio/​web majors but I can tell you that in the Film/​Video major, student’s got really screwed over. The headhunters took in WAY too many students than the classes could actually take but none of them stopped to ask if there was enough cameras for all students.
Much like everyone else says, this is a ‘for-​profit’ school which means the emphasis is on getting money and worrying about everything else LATER. I graduated from Ai New England with Bachelors in Digital Film & Video Production in 2009 and I wish I had someone to tell me how this school really was but sadly, now I am neck deep in student loans that are $ 150,331.41. I am screwed for the next 35 years of my life. (This is only if I plan to have a steady job for the next 3 decades and pay over $ 600 every month) Thank You Ai New England, I’ll never forget you and how little you offered yet how much you took from me. You have turned me into a slave.
This is an overly-​priced school that does not deliver what they promise. 85% of the students who graduate from this school end up working at Best Buy, Apple, Staples and other crappy jobs that anyone over the age 16 can get, with or without a diploma. The best thing you can do is go to a community college for two years and get all the bullsh*t classes out of the way so you don’t have to get raped by Ai New England absurd fees. Don’t say you haven’t been warned. The school hasn’t ‘improved’ except for the exterior. The equipment is still outdated! A school that costs so much money should have more equipment available for the students. How sad is that this school as of 2011 only has ‘ONE’ Canon 5D camera? You read correctly.
Don’t buy the BS the ‘sales’ people from Ai feed you. These same people do their best to keep the new perspective students & parents FAR AWAY from the actual students from the school for the fear of students telling the parents what goes on here. Do a test yourself and ask one of those headhunters from AiNE to let you walk around the school alone and talk to the students. Watch how fast they freak out and prevent that from happening.
If you teach your students to value themselves and their college education, they will both support and promote their school of choice for the rest of their life. This is not the case with Ai New England. Alumni’s HATE this school! You think I’m making this up? As of 2011, AiNE has stopped operating the so called ‘Alumni Night’ because the attendance was extremely low and the only thing heard during these gatherings were people complaining about how they cant start a family, buy a home or a car because AiNE and Sallie Mae put them into lifelong debt.
Listen, make sure you read every review on this school and definately make sure you speak to alumni graduates from this school. You can take these reviews with a grain of salt but the fact of the matter is that most of people who go to this school come out with an extremely negative experience and massive debt.

While i still value the things that I learned from the many great photography professors that I have had here (who are all leaving one bye one by the way), I would advise anyone who is thinking of attending college here to strongly reconsider. This is a for profit college, and they don’t care about anything as much as they care about money.

I attended Ai in 2006 for Media Arts & Animation. Worst Mistake ever. I didn’t know it at the time but It is part of a chain of «Art Institutes» For-​profit scam schools.
Their recruiters used the same lies that the GAO found with for-​profit colleges in 2010.
It’s an elaborate corporate scam to funnel as much government money as they can as fast as they can out of poor vulnerable people and leave them with the bill.
They use IMPULSE based programs to lure in people to programs that the people think have real-​world value and employers looking for people. In reality, it’s flooded fields and all you end up with is a high school level job you could get without Ai.
They used lies about connections, job placement, credentials, and more. They seem nice but its because they’re basically car salesmen. Their open houses are just a chance for them to isolate and pressure unsuspecting students.
I wish I could say it was isolated. But it wasn’t. Because of Ai and one other forprofit college lies I have over 93,000+ dollars in student debt that can never be repaid. 40k+ is directly from Ai (EDMC) and SallieMae working together: financial aid lying and telling students that private were loans were from SallieMae, their preferred Federal lender. Implying the loans were Federal. I dont even have a degree to show for going to Ai. They assume that because mortgages can be paid over 30 years that so can student loans. Mortgages replace rent. Student loans replace needs.
Even if you finish, you will have over 100k student debt and no way to pay it. It’s hard enough to find ANY job that will pay $ 100k a year, never-​mind an art job. Employers don’t even respect the degree because they know Ai is open enrollment (They take ANYONE with a pulse to get the government money, especially if they know they can’t afford it).
It is why EDMC (Education Management Corp) is owned 43% by Goldman Sachs. It’s just a corporate welfare scam.
Worst. Mistake. Ever.
Google EDMC and Art Institutes, they’ve been all over the news for this nation-​wide sub-​prime scam.

I honestly loved AI when I attended school there for photography. The faculty was amazing, and truly cared about the subject, and the students they taught. But ever since I graduated, things have been going downhill. They laying off 4 amazing professors purely based on seniority, and not taking into account what they actually do for the department or what skills they have. They’re going to be leaving big holes in pooled skill sets of the departments they’re laying professors off. They don’t care how the students feel about this, and it’s run more like a corporation than a school. After I left, all they want is for students to come in, give them money, and get them out with as little education and effort as possible. Unless NEiA starts shaping up, I honestly wouldn’t recommend this school to anybody.

Okay, so to follow up with this there are a few things and explain the reason that made my rating drop a star since finishing with my Bachelors degree in Interactive Media Design (now named Web Design & Interactive Media).
School is undergoing a decently sized construction project now and since I have finished I am told it is a huge hassle to current students due to noise. Regardless it is nice to see the school investing more money into the students priorities by adding more rooms and bettering the school.
In my last semester however the 4 star rating got knocked down to a 3. In your last semester you are required to have an internship and take part in a portfolio class to better your image to the outside world and to gain more knowledge in the field you will be entering. I luckily had found an internship with the help of professors and not through the Academic Affairs office but for those less fortunate there was less help to be seen. So because of this I am retracting my previous statement on the school being great with helping you find work. I am now finished with Ai and had found a great job in the field without the help of Ai that seems more interested in finding you any job to make them look good rather than finding you a job you are looking for. This is the major reasoning for knocking that star off the rating.
The next thing is something I had touched base on before and since has gotten worse. Some staff can never be found and often causes problems when you have to get a signature for one thing after another to even go to the classes you are paying for regardless. Professors (from my program) are always willing to help you get to the appropriate people but even they often cannot track them down. This causes major headaches and if thinking of going to Ai, be prepared for it.
The price has gone even higher and I am sure there are even more Audio majors attending the school. I greatly enjoyed most lectures from professors in my program and think it was well worth the time and to some degree the money. It is really hard to judge the school by the admissions staff so it is best to ask students/​alum if thinking of attending.

OKAY. First off. This school IS a business school.
I’ve Been going here for the «Media Arts & Animation» Program since 2005.
They never told us that we were Guinea pigs to be tested on. The above is True. The people here have a certain quota of students they NEED to get to come to this school. (I should have KNOWN something was up when they even offered to DRIVE me here to sign up) They remind me of used cars sales men. And most of them don’t even stay that Long in their job. Half way through my enrollment. My admissions rep changed.
In the beginning I loved this school. Though the commute was terrible, along with the dorming and the requirement of random general ed courses.
I even started working as a student worker.
This is when it opened my eyes. I never knew how much money was going into this!
Not only that but I began to see and understand what happened behind the scenes. The people that worked here hated it. Everyone was constantly looking for other jobs in other places. In the four years I’ve been here we went through 3 Bosses and 3 employees. I outlasted my main boss and the employees. (there’s only one who’s been here longer than me)
The animation course is a complete mess. You’re forced to have both 2D and 3D courses. Even if you wish to only major in one. If you like 3D and you’re horrible at 2D, too bad, you fail, you must take it again and PAY for it. If you love drawing and want to do 2D. Too bad. the world revolves around 3D and you MUST learn it, even if you never want to work on it in your future.
There’s only five animation teaches. (not including the chair who teaches maybe three classes a year… maybe?)
So If you don’t get a long with one teacher, you’re screwed until graduation. If you fail a course. There’s usually a rule that you won’t take it with the same teacher if you don’t want to. This is impossible at this school. They offer one of each animation classes a semester, if you’re lucky. sometimes they don’t even offer their required course, which sets MANY student behind a semester because of prerequisites.
All I can really say is that this program has a lot of fixing to do. and it’ll be too late for me.
I don’t know much about the other programs. Though I’ve heard great things about their longest run program, Audio.
I majored in Graphic Design in high school. and I actually majored in it for a semester before transferring to animation… and I learned more and did more in high school than the graduates here…
If you want to succeed here. «You shouldn’t take a full load of classes or have a part time job“you should also live with your parents and have no social life. :)
I can’t say anything about the other programs. But I will tell you this: The amount you will pay to go to this school is equal to the amount you would pay to go to HARVARD. At least with Harvard you know you have a good name and degree under your belt. Most employers don’t’ even know NEIA exists.

My degree was to be in photography. I was accepted (everyone gets in no matter who what where and what gpa you got). There is no portfolio requirement, don’t even send it. First off, all they want is for you to sign up for a loan. That is it. This school functions like a business. All the admissions people sound great and fun and your friend on the phone as well as in person. Actually, once you meet them in person you will quickly see how unorganized they are. The photography degree is completly digital. There are only 2 printers in the lab. The tech fees are unrealistic. Housing is 2 miles from campus. The housing deposit is non refundable. The school loan (ai loan) is a pay as you go or start paying after 1 year loan. How can you pay if you are in school and studying, possibly can’t find a job, or be able to make those payments each month on top of the living expenses of Boston?
There is much more, needless to say this is a scam school AND so is academy of art university.
Look into actual university programs and actual colleges to persue a degree in art and photography!

Just thought I would add to my review and update, and start by saying this school has been nothing bug un helpful and snobby to me in the last 2 weeks and I know of 20 people that just dropped out and are going to better schools, and probably more I dont know of or will soon, its not like its a bad concept of schools, learning your basic gen eds and such, but for this business you dont need them and even if thats what your thing is, there is much better schools that offer gen eds that make more sense and are integrated into your major.

I am a student here in my 4^th semester for graphic design. I would say that some majors are better than others. My boyfriend is an audio major and it is amazing, but tough. If you’re horrible at math, then forget it.
Graphic Design is pretty good. Like any other school some teachers are better than others. The teachers in all majors and even general education have great backgrounds. Hugo Burnham was my freshman seminar teacher and he is a drummer for a band that was pretty big in the UK. My typography teacher Donna used to own her own business and has won awards.
I am enjoying my time at the school. It’s a business type of school. They are getting you ready for the real world. You have to get an internship and full-​fill it in order to graduate. This school is not for everyone. The school is expensive, very expensive. If you take 5 classes then it’ll run you a little over $ 10,000 each semester and that doesn’t include housing, tech fees, books and your starter kit.

This school is good for kids who don’t intend to pay their student loans and have mommy & daddy giving them a free ride. This school is a private school, so thus, it’s run like a business.
The admissions people are a lot like cellphone company representatives or real estate agents in that they’ll tell you EVERYTHING you want to hear. The problem is that it’s about 50% truth, 50% fabrication. And they don’t care. But. they are the NICEST, MOST CHARMING people you will ever come across though, my admissions guy remembered my name for my entire 4 years.
As for education. well. I won’t knock that. The teachers are excellent. All teachers are required to be currently working in the field, so you don’t have any washed up creative directors teaching you the old ways of the land, everything you’ll learn is what is going on in the industry today. This school is great if you are a hands-​on learner because classes are project based and you won’t be reading too many books.
Residential life is absolutely idiotic though. Dorms are located at Regis College, an all-​girls catholic school. This might seem great for the guys, but don’t be too excited, you might be surprised how many lesbians inhabit an all-​girl christian school ;P Anyhow, the rooms are made of white cinderblocks that remind everyone who’s in them of a prison and the cafeteria will give you permanent Irritable Bowel Syndrome (just ask some past students). Also, when they say «just located 10 miles out of Boston». 10 miles is a long freaking way if you don’t have a car, and the shuttles to the train station (all the way at the end) don’t leave nearly enough. I wouldn’t pass up my own dorm life for the world though, I met some amazing people and had some amazing experiences. You might hate it when you live there, but when you leave, you’ll miss it.
My biggest issue with the school was that the administration was more concerned about money than anything. They wanted you in, and after you were there, they could give a flying crap. For $ 120k I feel like I should have gotten my clothes washed and ironed every day before class. I had SO many instances of them pulling shit to get me to take more classes, tacking on mysterious charges, and trying to make me spend more than I needed to.
And let me tell you… 120k in loans equals $ 1300 a month for me to pay back. If mommy and daddy aren’t footing the bill, you better be pretty confident that you’re going to want to keep doing what you went to school for in order to pay those babies off. For real. If you think you might change your mind and become a social worker later on, DON’T sign up for a contract here, because you’ll be stuck needing to pay off those loans for many many years to come.
I guess how hard the school is depends on your major. The audio program is excellent, but it’s not for wannabes. This is the program that loses the most people every year because they can’t cut it. I went for web design, which was a disaster because I learned nothing and they ended up changing the major to Interactive Media Design which was more appropriate for the classes offered, but not what I wanted to go to school for. Overall my degree has served me well, I learned a lot, but it seems a little shitty to draw someone in with a degree you don’t have.
Which reminds me, my boyfriend in college got admitted into the school for a program that DIDN’T EXIST. The animation program (this was 2002). They told him every year to wait it out, they’d have it next year, just keeping taking the media classes, blah blah blah. Well, in 2005 they introduced the Animation program. 3 YEARS LATER. To boot, they said «oh sorry, those classes won’t count. we should have had you take the graphic design degree instead». WHO DOES THAT? So luckily his parents are paying for his schooling, but he ended up just quitting school after that fiasco with 70k in loans and NO degree since he would have had to start all over (minus his general electives).
Good for him though, he now works in the gaming industry ANYHOW. He worked on this year’s Game of the Year Bioshock at 2K Studio’s and now works at Harmonix which made Guitar Hero and now makes RockBand. NO THANKS TO AI. In this industry it’s all about who you know, so don’t waste your money. That really isn’t an exaggeration. They literally toss applications in the garbage unless it comes with a recommendation.
As for me, I have a great job, but it’s no thanks to the career advisors. I didn’t really learn anything in school I didn’t already know, except etiquette and best practices which works for me. Ok, all in all. If you’re paying for college yourself, do yourself a favor and go to community college. If not, well. it’s a decent education, and you’re probably already used to wasting your parents money anyhow by now.
