I have been having custom work done by Joe for many years. I am an architect and have gotten things made (countertops, custom furniture) for my clients and myself. The quality it fabulous, particularly the finish. Joe can work with your designs, transferring to a CAD drawing which can be reviewed and tweeked. He can add his own expertise on joinery, dimensions and design. Recently I have been bringing down rough sawn cherry from our woods in Vermont and he has been making furniture out of that, which has been really fun. Love using someone local. He just finished a kitchen island, with some shelves, drawers and towel bars and it will definitely be a family heirloom.

One of the best furniture-​makers in America, in my humble opinion, and almost all their work is done right in their studio in Chestnut Hill. Joseph and Clint and the entire crew at van Benten work magic with wood. Exceptional craftsmanship and creativity in reinterpreting American classics and creating a few classics of their own (their Cantilever Rocker, for example, of which I’m a proud owner). On the surface, pricey, but when you consider that you’re buying an original American heirloom, not so much. And when you look at what Ralph Lauren charges for some of his Bloomingdales monstrosities, this stuff looks like a bargain.
