The Liceo Cubano de Bridgeport goes back sixty years when Latinos, especially Cubans and Puerto Ricans, started their migration to the industrial might of Connecticut’s Gold Coast. It was a place to rest, to relax, to enjoy a little bit of home in the midst of an oftentimes unfriendly environment. From its former downtown location, the Liceo moved to its Fairfield Avenue’s Black Rock location about thirty years ago. It is now a landmark institution in the Latino community. We literally grew up going to the Liceo as teenagers when we were refugees in this great country of ours. Almost fifty years later, its services have expanded to take in most of the Latino community, but it is still home. And so many anglos enjoy the salsa dancing classes.
