I’m long overdue for updating this review, but I haven’t been in for a while and ownership changed hands. I can however tell you what I know: Paul Lundy took over for Bob Montgomery over a year ago but he had been working and training with Bob for some time prior. Bob is still involved and comes in regularly so his knowledge is still on tap. Most typewriter enthusiasts know Bremerton Office Machines from his work with manual typewriters, however they also repair IBM Selectrics and Wheelwriters. I’ve heard good things from other enthusiasts about Paul’s work. Rates are pretty much the same as what Bob charged for years, which are about half that of office machine stores in Western Washington which *say* they can do repairs but farm out the work to independent mechanics. Yes, repairs still cost money. A good typewriter isn’t like the $ 20CD player you found in a pawn shop — they are intricate, finely tuned mechanical devices which were hand-built by skilled craftspeople. Repairs and adjustments aren’t done by software updates or offshore tech support reps — they require hands-on inspection, testing, checking linkages, etc. by skilled technicians who have worked on hundreds of machines. Most typewriters haven’t been serviced in 40+ years, so getting service once every 10 years is not exactly an undue hardship here. Bremerton Office Machines also offers fully serviced typewriters for sale. I just checked prices on their site and they’re pretty fair given the labor and skill required to make a typewriter fully operational. If you are looking to buy a typewriter, repair shops are a relative bargain to get started on the right foot. Typewriter repair is fast becoming a lost art, so I commend Paul for being one of the very few of the«new» guard to keep these machines running.

One of the last places for typewriter repair in the state. It was recently taken over by the nicest man and Bob Montgomery is still working there. I took my five Smith Corona typewriters there for service. They are varying ages and were in varying conditions. The owner looked each of them over and was able to tell me what he would have to do to get them in shape. He gave me an price estimate and time estimate and really worked with me to make sure I would get the machines back in a good time frame. I got them back faster than expected and the price was very close to the estimate. There were no surprises. I mean, it wasn’t cheap, but it wasn’t unfair. They even tried to help me find information on sourcing parts. They showed me some of the wonderful antiques they have in the store, which they also sell. Just a great great place.

If you need a typewriter fixed this is the place to go! I drove down from Shoreline to have a 1958 typewriter fixed for my uncle who is writing a book. Great service and we would highly recommend this place. The owner has a long history with office machines and knows them inside out.
