I’m sad to hear this place has closed my Grandmother and I met for lunch there twice. The two times we were there were about 6 months apart and the staff remembered us the second time. The food was fresh and delightful and there’s not another place quite like it in Brandon… especially a privately owned local establishment. I hope the owners will see this an know they’ll be missed.

Awesome Chicken fajita omelet with super delicious vanilla latte. Yummy banana foster’s french toast made my day! With excellent service and good environment. Love the music here. Oh yeah!

Nice little place with 30 seats and 4 stools at the counter. I’ve been two times for breakfast on the weekend around 9am before it gets busy. The menu is small but fresh. I recommend the chicken fajita omelet with fresh tomatoes. The coffee is good and they also offer latte and teas. Jasmine is friendly and the Adel music playing in the background made for a peaceful, no children breakfast. Enjoy

Perfectly simple environment when you walk in the door. Brandon doesn’t offer many unique options and this restaurant has exceeded my expectations for the location. I had the Sumatra Signature and enjoyed every single bite! The Quinoa and Avocado salad is amazing as well. The fruit on the side was fresh and delicious which is win for me. Blown away with the flavor on the Sumatra signature and looking forward to my next experience!

So I’d read bout the restaurant & wanted to go in just hadn’t made it in yet but so glad I finally did, it was delicious! I went around lunch time & still had the option for brunch which is my preference. The place although small, has both indoor & outdoor seating, nothing fancy but it’s clean w/a quaint, quiet, & cozy feel. I was greeted upon entering & sat quickly, my server was excellent & friendly, I’m horrible w/names so unfortunately I forgot his. I started w/coffee which was good, nothing like my Spanish coffee but enjoyable none the less. I ordered a Greek style omelet that had spinach, oven fired tomatoes, & feta chz, it’s served w/ur choice of bread, my choice-English muffin & includes a small fresh fruit cup… Everything was delicious, perfectly made, & w/great presentation! I also had the pleasure of enjoying a croissant w/an apple butter sauce compliments of the house & yummmmmy! It was the perfect end to my meal! Overall, I enjoyed my first time here, it was fresh, delicious, & service was top-notch! Prices are comparable to other breakfast/brunch places like, egg & I, first watch, brunchery, & such… so it’s another place to add to the mix ;)

Met up with a group of friends here the day after Christmas. While the server was very friendly, I was really disappointed by the food. I was originally going to order the sesame chicken salad(?), but was informed that the kitchen was out of chicken, which our server blamed on the fact that it was the day after Christmas. He said that the main chef was actually out restocking groceries at that moment. Mind you, it was probably about 12:30pm then and I think this place is open at 9am daily. I ended up going with the hummus & veggie wrap, and got the hummus on the side like I do at many other establishments. For the price I paid($ 10 – 12), my entrée was definitely not worth it. It was basically a wheat wrap with some raw veggies inside. And the hummus was unlike any I’ve ever had. It’s supposed to be roasted garlic hummus, but was a green texture, not smooth and wasn’t particularly appetizing. Our server told us later, when we asked, that their hummus is actually made of raw chickpeas, freshly hand-peeled. I guess it wasn’t my thing. I’ve been to many vegan/vegetarian places and I’ve never had hummus that was quite like this. My friends ordered the turkey Panini and the Portobello Philly cheese sandwich and a slice of cheesecake, but both also seemed pretty unsatisfied with their orders. We sat outside the porch for a while catching up, and I think around 2−3pm is when I saw the cooks coming in carrying an assortment of produce/groceries. I don’t want to be too harsh, but I would hope that a restaurant is better prepared than to have the main cooks going out in the middle of the day to gather ingredients. Maybe we caught them at a bad time, or I didn’t order the right items, but I was disappointed by this visit overall.

My family visited this bistro on December 21th and we had a very nice waiter but he had no help. He sat us he made coffees he got everything and besides that he was the one that ran the register. It’s a shame this place could be really a nice little place but they need help. They were out of regular coffee and milk and had run out of cheddar cheese too. It was not so great before and since this management took over I thought it would improve but this is the third time I’ve been and it get worse. The desserts are very dry too. They were short on help out of everything and no management available. The chef is also the manager and they don’t have any help.

There are only two places in Brandon that I truly enjoy eating at well actually 3 and this is one of them. The menus are configured and the ingredients are always fresh. They make thier own sundried tomatoes and the quiche is delicious. They make everything from scratch even the salad dressings. I am truly surprised that it is not packed.

Love this place. Food is very very fresh, atmosphere is very quiet and peaceful. Great way to start the day. Ordered chicken fajita omelette. It was stellar. Girlfriend ordered openface veggie burger breakfast sandwich. Also amazing. Coffee is wonderful. If you’re looking for a quiet little spot, this is it. My kind of place for sure.

Extremely disappointed. Came here with a friend and she ended up with gum in her coffee. Not hers by the way. The waiter took a while to get back to the table with no one else in the café. Food arrived and she received inedible French toast, ice cold. I ordered the spinach, feta and sun-dried tomato omelet and it had an abundant amount of pepper. Definitely our last visit.

This restaurant is getting better every time we come out. The menu is constantly changing every week, which you have to build your trust in, but the food is executed so well, and with style. It’s like the chef actually has a passion for the food, he cares. There are a few small kinks here there, but for a smaller newly re-imaged restaurant, overall, it’s a diamond in a town,(Brandon) with terrible food choices. This is the only place I have yet to find with organic local food choices and chef inspired dishes… Everything else is just another chain really… Bleh. We had the chicken tacos… Awesome! The bacon wrapped shrimp… awesome, especially with the slaw! The stuffed chicken… amazing, cooked perfectly and exquisite flavor.(Yes, I said that) Buddy brew local coffee… Great coffee, but needs a little onsite perfecting. Jai alai in a can… They need some additional beer choices, but the ones they have are local and good Chocolate torte and cheese cake… Pretty good, Tasty for home made, 4 out of 5 Chef Curtis even came out and explained many of the dishes, and shared some of the other home made sauces and side dishes. Oh my god… You gotta try the barbecue sauce… We are ranking it the best we have had, so good for a sweet bbq. Definitely the one place we have found to frequent in Brandon for lunch and dinner.

Terrible service. Forgot that they didn’t take our order. Got one of our group’s orders completely wrong. Took forever for everything. They just kept claiming they were short on staff. The manager is also a chef, there was only one waitress. I even had to ask for syrup to put on my french toast. The manager claims that next time my group goes, the meal is on them. I don’t think we’ll go again, though.

Sumatra is our favorite«hidden gem» in Brandon! I love their emphasis on locally sourced, organic produce and have vegetarian and vegan options for every meal. For brunch, their omelets are lovely and the bananas foster french toast is a treat. Dinner is always a special affair — earlier this week I had perfectly seared cod on red quinoa with whole sun-dried tomatoes. Dessert and wine options are excellent — try the flourless chocolate torte! The coffee is the best we’ve had in Brandon. I love supporting this awesome, delicious and locally owned restaurant!

This place has reopened under new management. It is awesome. It appears to be ran more efficiently. It has been remodeled and there have been some menu changes. Actually the menu changes on a weekly basis. Although, I miss those golden hash potatoes, I like the new menu changes. The French Toast has now become Bananas Foster French Toast. I thought I might just lick the plate. The food was so good that I came back the next day. They gave me a banana bread cake as a complimentary dessert. Of course, it was delicious. Best of all, they use fresh organic ingredients. This may become my new weekend staple for brunch.

Really amazing little spot in the Tampa area! The food is an excellent and approachable mix– from lots of delightful vegetarian options to chicken Florentine! The quinoa and avocado salad is SPECTACULAR– by the way. This is the kind of food that I am constantly in search of(fresh, sort of Californian in style) and as far as the Tampa area is concerned– Sumatra Bistro is the only place to get it. The remodel adds a nice updated touch! Also, let me just say that the server Toni is PHENOMENAL! She is thoughtful in her approach as a server and very knowledgeable about the menu, the process in the kitchen, and pretty much every little odd and end of Sumatra bistro. Also, she makes a MEAN caramel latte and is basically a bright little ray of sunshine. I’ve come back multiple times just to see her and chat, and it seemed like other patrons had a similar experience(just based on the way that they chatted and laughed with her). As one of the consistent faces of Sumatra bistro in the past couple of years– she really shines and makes the adorable little café what it is.

The place is small and nothing to brag about in ambiance. I like the fact that this is like the only place that serves organic and vegetarian dishes. I cannot say it wasn’t a little dirty the last time I was there. Really it seems like they are just short on staff but I assume that business isn’t booming so no need for too many people on-they just need to be a little more on top of it.

Pretty good — one of the best tomato basil bisque’s I’ve ever had. The salad was very fresh, and my panini was also quite good. I didn’t care for the salad dressing though, it was really, really thick, and kinda just globbed out onto my salad. Very busy place and took awhile, which was fine because we didn’t have anywhere to be. Our waitress was great and checked on us frequently, I’ll visit again soon.

A friend and I stopped here for lunch before hitting the mall for some retail therapy. It was must ok, neither one of us were impressed. I ordered a panini and it was fair, personally I would have preferred a panini from Panera. He ordered the potato pancakes and did not enjoy them at all. Loaded with so much onion that was all we could taste.

I used to get massages at the spa next door, and they would always promote Sumatra. They would serve little tasty pastries while you wait. I always just assumed the café was super expensive, but surprise… it’s reasonable! It’s a little hidden, but a cute restaurant. There is outdoor and indoor seating, but both areas are not that big. We had a party of 6 and had to combine tables. That just shows how small the place is, that they usually only cater to smaller parties. Small doesn’t mean anything against them, though. There was one server for the whole place, and she did a great job addressing every customer’s needs. She seemed rushed, yes, but still took the time to engage in friendly conversation with us. My niece was with me, and our server was teaching her Spanish words like«gracias» and«muy bien.» She gave my niece a small sample cup of soup without us even asking. GREAT service! AND the food matches the service! Full breakfast and lunch menu with variety. The usual breakfast food, plus a you-don’t-see-it-everywhere potato pancake. I would’ve tried that if I wasn’t already craving a sandwich. My Sumatra Signature panini(turkey, bacon, avocado, spicy aioli sauce, served with a side salad w balsamic vinaigrette dressing) was delicious! Everything tasted fresh. The sauce wasn’t too spicy or too mild. Everyone at my table agreed their choices were just as satisfying. Obviously, we had to order something for dessert if we’re at a local bakery. Being stuffed from our lunch, though, we tried something small and decided on the chocolate chip cookies. Simple, but scrumptious! Two cookies warmed for a quick 10 seconds, and voila! Ooey, gooey, chocolate goodness. My friend even said it was like a commercial as you gently break it and watch the melted chocolate come apart. My only qualm about Sumatra is that I had wish I had tried it all those years living in Brandon. I live 40 minutes away now! BOO!

Stopped in for an awesome, healthy, organic lunch for about the same price as a Subway. Great service, great fresh food. They have a full menu to include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desserts. Beer and wines are also available as well as assorted teas and coffees. I shall return!

I was looking for a non chain sidewalk café type of place that had coffee and some yummy lunch where I can also enjoy the presence of my puppy, and be able to use my lap top. Also, a place not too busy, and not pricey. This place is it. I only had a peppermint mocha and slice of lemon cake, but it was still quite yummy. The menu is full of healthy options including breakfasts, soups, sandwiches and salads, and different types of selections mostly under $ 10. That’s great. I wish I tried those but that’s okay, I will be back. Especially since the plates that I did see looked good, and the people who had them really liked the food, plus huge servings. I called them before hand to make sure they accepted dogs, and they did. They watched my dog while I stepped away to the bathroom, and I was able to view the inside which was quite pretty, homey and modern. Very nice breath of fresh air. I often don’t picture that often when I come to brandon. I picture tons of chain places and traffic. Fun place check it out. Thanks Unilocal, you lead me in the right direction!
