This was one of those experiences that seems like a bad dream, only you just are not waking up to find it was only a dream. We were out fishing in the Braidwood area and the fishing was terrific. Trout were practically jumping in the boat. Weather turned bad and we decided to stay overnight at a local motel which seemed like a good idea at the time. Not expecting a Marriott or Hyatt or Hilton, this place was just horrible. Funny enough, their claim to fame is that this hotel was actually used in the film Planes, Trains, and Automobiles with John Candy and Steve Martin. The sign out front also referenced new rooms. Don’t let either reference fool you into staying here. Spider webs everywhere in every possible corner of the room, all across the ceiling, and despite the spider webs, there was still a large free moving bug that the girls needed me to kill. The carpet was filthy and just nasty, but that was better than the floor in the bathroom. The corners in the bathroom alone had several layers of caked on dirt, and it was more than disgusting. The shower walls had mold in multiple places as did the shower curtain in a handful of places. Not sure what the brown stains were all over the side of the bathtub, and not sure I want to know. The mattresses were probably the worst I have ever experienced and judging from the feeling, were probably decades old. The lock on door barely worked and you could see the outside hallway through the cracks in the door from the inside of the room. In fact, the bathroom door wouldn’t stay shut at all. It was warped and heavily caked with paint which prevented it from closing. Never mind the layers of cigarette ashes behind the nightstand in what was supposed to be a non-smoking room. This place smelled horrible and that was the better part of the overall experience. Nasty! If I could give it negative stars I would. You’d be better off sleeping outside or in your car.
