I went to Geraldson Community Farm for a tour arranged by a meet-up organizer. The person who took us around was extremely knowledgable about the farm and organic farming in general. He took his time showing us around despite the fact that they were getting ready for their fall festival. He answered all of our questions and did a good job of educating us city folks. If I lived closer, I would participate in their share purchase program or volunteer and get a reduced rate on a share. The major growing season, according to our guide, is November — May.

A great place to buy seasonal organic vegetables, Geraldson Community Farm is a showcase for sustainable farming. Their goal is to get people to buy locally and eat seasonally. The Geraldson family wanted to sell their land in 2005 but with the stipulation the land had to remain in agriculture. The county of Manatee bought the land and leased it to Florida West Coast RC&D, who have now run it the past three years. They have an amazing selection of seasonable veggies. I got spinach, red cabbage, carrots, kale and arrugula which I turned into a fantastic meal. They are open Wed. 3 – 6 and Sat. 11 – 2 for members to come and buy produce. The Local Food Buying Club costs $ 25 for non-members and $ 20 for members of Geraldson Farm, Gamble Creek Farm and Florida West Coast RC&D. It’s open pretty much every day to volunteers who wish to come pick, plant or wed. Contact Linda Peary or William Harris.
