We have been shopping at J&L for many years. You will not find a more competent staff. They have the answer to any gardening question. I have attended a few of their classes, and they are also wonderful. I wish I could give them a five star rating. We particularly love to support local businesses. Our problem with J&L is that several times, we have purchased plants and trees labeled incorrectly. The most egregious was the purchase of what we thought was an Elberta peach tree. It turned out to be some sort of peach bearing white fleshed fruit. I contacted J&L via email about the problem, and later I went into the store and talked directly to the manager. His tactic was simply to stare at me and say nothing. I was very disappointed. I expected more forthrightness from them. On a smaller scale, we have also purchased a few plants labeled as cucumbers only to learn too late that they were really zucchini. I love J&L and their employees, and we plan to continue to shop there, but we have stopped buying fruit trees, and we are careful to inspect plants to ensure that they are really what they claim to be. I have always believed that the ace in the hole for a small business is to provide great customer service that the big stores don’t offer, but J&L loses on that one.

I often wonder if the owner realizes that a younger generation has moved into Davis County and supplying more variety of dwarf or japonica plants is the future and what they sell is in the past. Just like the changing age demographics. As I observe the variety of shrubs very few grow slow or stay small. The sign they have with the pictures among the shrub department are as old as my first born. A 5’x4’ spirea; which is the rule not the exception here, is going by the wayside like the baby boomers. I asked an expert why they don’t have more of a selection and his hasty, grumpy, set in his way demeanor answer was because we don’t. I asked why again and he became even more grumpier and said because we don’t and never will and their was no need for me to ask again. Wow… talk about a hater of young people or a hater of small plants. Either way neither me or any dwarf plant had expected a response like that one. Hate to say it if they don’t evolve with the next generation Tri City Nursery in Kaysville will steal their thunder because like the new trend in succulent gardens, shrubs that stay small are much better than shrubs that turn into hedges. Someone once said about a colorado blue spruce… when you buy it it looks as cute as a puppy, but once it gets big, it is as big as a saint bernard. Stop selling plants that turn into saint bernards and start selling more plants that stay cute as puppy. And what is even better than a cute puppy is a happy, bubbly, employee. Maybe selling cute puppies will make the employees happy and bubbly. Let hope.

The variety of plants they carry and the amount of stock they have is outstanding. I would much rather spend my money here than a big home improvement store not only because I’d rather support local shops but their plants seem much healthier and they have a much larger variety.

SUPPORTLOCAL!!! J&L is great. The owner-looking guy that stands in the main area answering questions is a huge resource of knowledge. He’s helped us over the years on every bug and goofy leaf issue we’ve ever had. J&L is great. Support them by buying there.

Visited J&L on Memorial Day for a couple plants for a high shade area in my yard. We’d had trouble finding plants that could handle 90% shade at Home Depot or Lowes. J&L was fairly busy being Memorial Day but they had tons of parking and lots of space in the building and the yard so it wasn’t cramped. There were lots of employees around to help as well. We got some advice on what would work in our space and we’re really happy with the results so far. More employees were there after checkout to provide plastic to protect the car and help load. Wasn’t sure if I was supposed to tip or not so that was a bit awkward. J&L also have a cool guarantee that if you plant with their fertilizer, they guarantee thier plants for a year. We also needed sprinkler parts while we were there and they had good options inside. The only reason for four stars is the price. We’d been looking at Home Depot and Lowes at Japanese Maples and there prices were almost ½ the prices at J&L. You obviously pay a premium for selection and for the advice you can get from the staff. If you need something simple, go to Home Depot, if you need some help, these guys are great.
