Best free natural history museum I have found. Great couple of hours for the whole family! Must stop if in town.

Pretty standard research university natural history museum although a bit small for such a large and wealthy(30,000 students, 1 billion dollar endowment) institution. The have a really cool footprint exhibit where you can make tracks of all kinds of critters in a sand box. They also have a beautiful exhibit of moccasins. This is Colorado so the emphasis is fossils(paleontology) and native American history(anthropology). I would have like to have seen more geology(minerals and rocks) considering the rocky mountains and the incredible geologic history of Boulder valley.

There are 2 floors in this museum with about 4 – 5 exhibits in the museum, most of which tie together so I’m not sure they can be called separate exhibits. The nice part about the exhibits is that all the information pertains to the area: dinosaur bones found in Colorado, Native Americans and their history pertaining to Colorado, etc. Don’t go in expecting a huge museum full of exhibits but you can definitely spend about an hour, maybe 2 at most there. They do have lovely children’s sections and a little café on the bottom floor.

Can’t say how much we enjoyed the museum since it was locked up tight At 10:30 am on a Thursday. :(. Wasn’t until a couple of hours later we saw the news about how rare this storm is an how the campus was closed. Received 3 e– mails from a concerned employee that I diissed their fine little museum. Sorry. We don’t get this much rain in a year in San Diego. Hope everyone is ok.
