Too Timid

I’ve been ordering from TooTimid since I was 18. Even as a young adult this site has been the only place where I feel comfortable and trust what I’m buying. It’s great that it doesn’t feel like some sleezy guy site, and all of their items have extensive details which helps me choose a new style easier. 7yrs later I’m still happy with them, and I’d recommend them to anyone who’s initially shy about this stuff.

Okay I give this 4 stars because if you are a newbie to the world of sex toys, this is a great place to start. It is very boutique-​ish, and I think many people who have reservations about things like this will feel comfortable here. It is targeted to middle aged women and perhaps couples. I walked in and liked the place, but new immediately it was not what I was looking for. I asked the counter person if they had what I was looking for, already knowing the answer, and she said no, it was not that sort of place, but gave me helpful advice in other possible shops in the area.
In summation, I think most people would feel comfortable having their first sex toy shopping experience here, and I would recommend it. There are no lurking skeevy dudes in a porn section (there is no porn section from what I saw) leering at you, there is no wall of bongs, and you do not have to fight your way through a bunch of novelty penises hanging from the ceiling to get to the counter. Everything is neat, clean and presented attractively. However if you are looking for more adventurous things beyond «my first vibrator» another shop is a better bet (and if anyone finds what that is, I’d love to hear it!).

Twat?!? I’ve been in a sex toy shop and didn’t review it? Clearly this is a vast oversight on my behalf.
Now, I’m not likely to shop at Too Timid that often, mostly because I am, in fact, not remotely Timid. This is the sex store for discerning women who aren’t fans of sex stores. Not to say it’s bad, clearly it isn’t. My star rating is vastly based on my opinion for my patronage, and since three stars mean «A-​OK» and that’s how I feel, well…
I, presonally, thought this place was too stark. While I enjoy the boutique feel, I think they could have accomplished that with more product and interesting displays.
I do LOVE that there is only a display item, and that your toy of choice is hidden new in a box and has not been quite literally man-​handled and the service here is quite stellar.
I do think the prices are a tad bit high and, as I said, the selection is limited, but it does have the right look and feel for it’s sheshe Newbury Street location and it’s is definitely FAR superior to it’s neighbors just down the street.

Ok firstoff this place should have a better rating than the schlockfest that is CondomWorld. Second off, I feel like some sort of brazen hussy, as opposed to my fellow Unilocalers, nothing about this store intimidated me at all (aside from say, the prices)
It’s a sex toy store. If you are embarrassed about shopping for sex toys to the point where you feel awkward about approaching the staff with questions, do it online where you will have a larger selection, user reviews, and less anxiety.
Otherwise, this is a good shop. They would’ve gotten 5 stars, but they sell jelly products, which is way lame. For those not in the know, jelly products harbor bacteria like ew, and should only be used with condoms. Other stores like Babeland or Good Vibrations either eschew jelly products completely, or post big warning signs about inferior materials. It’s possible that if you were to try to buy something at Too Timid that was made out of the offending material, they would tell you that, but in my opinion, shops geared towards women shouldn’t sell sex toys made with material that is unhealthy (for the record, Jelly products are porous, can’t be disinfected, and often contain latex for those of y’all with latex allergies).
ANYWAY, the store itself is totally going for that Babeland/​Good Vibes feel. It’s well lit, very boutiquey feeling, toys have floor models which are laid out to be examined (one complaint, some were broken, others had dead batteries), and there’s no obnoxious blow up dolls in sight. The staff was super friendly, knowledgeable, adorable and personable so that was a big plus.
A smaller book/​condom/​lube selection than Good Vibes, but a much larger toy selection (even discounting the Jelly products). I didn’t notice any serious fetish gear (aside from a strap on, but to me that’s something that is really more utilitarian than fetish oriented). This could in fact be because the name –is– Too Timid, which could imply that the store really is catered more towards hetero/​vanilla sex type stuff.
I really hope that this store survives. Me and the esteemed Peter G were the only customers in there the whole time we were there, which sucks. Boston has a serious lack of sex toy stores in general, let alone good ones.

Too Timid: This is exactly how I am when it comes to setting foot in an adult bookstore. I guess that’s why they call it the blues… err… i mean… Too Timid. This is an adult store that focuses on the sensual desires of women rather than the visual fetishes of men.
Too Timid is NOT an adult bookstore… although, adult books are sold there. Instead, I would call Too Timid a funky glass dildo and lube store.
I had a giftcard… so I got lube. The guy working was very approachable. The place was wicked clean. The dildo’s look like glass reefer pipes. (Yeah, i said «reefer.»)
It was a pleasant experience, and nothing to be uncomfortable about.

Things I’m looking for as a young woman going into an adult store:
1) Bright lighting… check
2) Unsketchy clientel… check
3) Friendly, non-​threatening sales staff… check
I would say it’s kinda like the Sephora of adult toy stores. There’s testers for the lotions and potions and you can check out the wiggling and jiggling things too. Prices were reasonable as well. I agree with other Unilocalers that their website is great, especially for those who want to be more discreet. BTW-​my shopping bag was a non-​descript pink shopping bag so I could wander down the rest of Newbury Street without funny looks.

This store is very clean, neatly organized, and nicely laid out. It is a smidge uncomfortable that things aren’t out, you have to ask for them. I was debating whether or not to bother but then the helpful salesman let me know if I saw something I wanted to could get it myself from the cabinet below. OK, things are looking less awkward!
The checkout process was smooth and not awkward (even though it was with a guy). He was very friendly and super helpful.

This was my first trip to Too Timid. It was almost like a sex toy museum. It was very upscale inside and not sketchy at all. The toys, lubes, books etc were all set up with mostly just 1 item on display that you can pick up and check really check and getting a real idea of what the toy is or the texture and scent or the lube/​lotion. Some of the items seemed very reasonable priced and yet some seemed very pricey. But then that is sometime just the items and not the shop.
I totally think if you are going to go to this type of establishment, this is the one to go to. It is comfortable to walk around and really spend time in there checking everything out and not feel a creepy vibe that you can feel at some other places.

FINALLY– a dildo that looks like a remote control for the jetsons. a dildo that you buy out of a box that HAS NOT BEEN OPENED AND SCOTCH-​TAPED BACK TOGETHER. a dildo in a store so clean that you can touch things WITHOUT fear of contracting syphilis upon contact.

I thought it was concept of upscale sex retail is a good one, because far too many places are cheap and rundown. So I was refreshed at the selection and quality of this place. I would like to think of this place as the sex shop equivalent to kmart, like oh I just ran out of lube, need to go to Too Timid.
But the things that I’m personally looking for I most likely would find on their website.

Too Timid is a great company. They’re all about confidentiality and classiness. I dig it. Other Unilocalers know (ask marc c, leigh ann, ricky, jen h, roni, etc etc) I can be a little raunchy to say the least. I’m pretty open and bla bla bla. I loved walking into Too Timid. Though I agree, you can miss it, I also think most places on Newbury St are like that. Its really clean and the lighting is great. The staff was professional and helpful. Their set up is clean and organized with every tester fully batted up so you can feel, with your hands people!, how intense or soft or whatever everything is. =)

While they are pricey, we learned that they are actually cheaper than Condom World. This place is like sex toy central. Yeh it is catered towards women, but DAMN this place is hot to trot!

Too Timid is a really simple, user friendly type of shop, which is clearly geared towards the ladies. They offer a ton of massage stuff, lotions, powders with feathers and foofy things. They have a vast selection of lower to higher end «personal massagers». The staff seemed nice, but didn’t really move from the counter while we were in there, and I have to say that they probably would have had more sales if they had been interacting with our bachelorette party of eight more, as only three of our party walked out with purchases.
My only suggestion besides talking more with the customers is really to make sure that the sample bottles of lotion and lubes aren’t drippy (ew!) and that all the displays work.

I love sex stores! Call me a perv or a dirty old man but they just make me happy. Who wants to buy condoms and lube at cvs where the selection is nil and everyone looks at you like you’re a huge slut. I usually head over to Good Vibrations in Brookline for my lube and condom needs and the occasional sex toy but I happened to be in Back Bay with some friends who have worked at sex stores and we decided to take a break from margaritas and head over to see what this new sex store was all about.
First of all, why would you call a sex shop «Too Timid: A Romance Company»?
Don’t get me wrong. Romance is a lovely thing. I’ve been known to wine and dine. I’ve been known to woo, seduce and flatter. Yet when I think of a Romance Company… a i-​vibe or a rabbit does not come to mind. Maybe anal beads on a rather frisky day but I digress.
Second of all, they did not have that great a selection which is bad enough in of itself but it also made the store look rather barren and pathetic.

the sales people i’ve encountered have been fantastic! imformative, friendly, easy to talk to. not sketchy at all. they have real, genuine knowledge so don’t feel bad about asking them a question or 10. by the way, the guy i met there was the owner of the company itself. friendly as hell. the second time i went in, the girl was sweet as pie!
sure, the products are more expensive then, i don’t know… the sex shops in chinatown. but they’re quality. i’d rather pay a bit more for a sales people with knowledge about the product, a comfortable/​non-​sketchy place to shop, and QUALITY!
i bought some cootchie cream (yes that’s the real name) and got the best shave of my LIFE!
this store isn’t designed to be trashy. sure i’ll go into condom world once and a while for kicks and giggles. but here i know i’m getting a quality product from trustworthy people who not only know their shit, but want to make you comfortable as well.

i went here again today for gifts for my mothers birthday. the salesgirl was super helpful in finding a gift that wouldn’t scare my mother, would make her laugh, and she’d get use out of. she was very knowledgeable about the other products i purchased.
i know i said before i’d go to condom world for kicks and giggles but now i can’t even see myself doing that! too timid has spoiled me!

This place looked interesting. I hate going to a shop for… things… and getting creepy looks from a some weirdo who keeps trying to brush past me in the aisle. So, I think that a store that’s focused on ladies would be perfect, but this one is not. Yes, it is clean and open and has a nice atmosphere, but I agree on the male working there. I hate to be all sexist, but if this place is supposed to be about making me feel comfortable, why is this guy who knows nothing about being a gal sitting there? I felt very uncomfortable as I talked to a friend of mine about the selection with this stranger hanging out in our conversation. The products they carry are only the… mmm… how do I explain this… it’s like the carry all the normal product lines… but only the de-​sexualized ones… That’s fine you know, I understand it, but there was actually nothing that I wanted there and a surprising number of things that were just gross to me.

Update: I found out that this store has only been open for a couple months and is hiring more staff. So, I decided to give it another shot. There was a girl working there who was helpful and friendly. I like their packaging: a discrete bag that they will tape shut for you in case you want a little more privacy. There was no discernable order to their lubricants. I actually can’t really understand the organization to the store… it doesn’t seem to be laid out by brand or material… maybe it’s laid out by type of item? Maybe. Anyway, still nothing that I’m interested in.
