State MBTA Station – Blue & Orange Line

Honestly? It’s a bit of a mess and the panhandlers by the 7 – 11 are a major nuisance. But it’s a great location and perfectly located for a quick transfer to anywhere in the city.

Have you ever felt that you were going in circles and can never find an ending? And when you do, you’re like seriously??? That could have been SO MUCH easier.
That’s how I feel about this station sometimes. It might be accessible and quicker than the green line sometimes, but the connection to the blue line always trips me up because it’s not clearly signed/​labeled.
At least Gov’t Center has adequate signage…

A one star review for this station on the Blue line as the signage is simply God-​awful. For us tourists, good luck figuring out what’s what and where’s where. And I have ridden a dozen other Metro’s in the world, so I know.
State Station is a transfer between the Blue Line (where it is between Aquarium and Government Center) and the Orange Line (between Downtown Crossing and Haymarket). I couldn’t tell you about the entrances or exits as I was simply here to change from one train to the other.

I take the orange to or from work often enough to be used to it as this station an be confusing at first with several different street access points. I would say first timers should be ready for a mix of suits during business hours and some crazy people all other hours of the day, haha.

Why am I writing a review of a T stop? Good question! The MBTA just opened an entrance to State Street right in my office building and I am so happy I could sing! Perfect timing, as it was pouring when I got out of work and today was the one day I didn’t bring an umbrella. Who didn’t need to walk across the street and go home looking like a wet dog? This guuuuuy! It’s bright and clean (for now), and the MBTA official even gave me a lovely greeting as I came down the stairs (not a lot of people use this entrance I suppose, or probably even know about it). Best shortcut ever!

Yeah sure, people have an issue with all trains, is that really a surprise? No one is happy these days with much of anything. I however, have no qualms with State Street. It’s my end destination to get to work and takes me right back home about 8 hours later. I take the Orange Line part of it but in the past I have been on the Blue. Maybe I’m used to it or just to be expected and not surprised about different issues people talk about. To me, its not really a huge deal. Should they have Charlie Card boxes on the «secret» entrances to the station, yes. Do I need that box, no. Helpful though perhaps to others.
No true complaints, it’s the T.

The blue line portion of state st station is so depressing. Its like being in a cave. Apparently that s the look theyre going for? They have been doing construction for a long ass time, i think trying to elongate the platform so they can add another train car to the blue line.
The layout of the station as a whole is just poor. So you get off the blue line (switching to orange line) walk down some stairs, walk toward the orange line then back up more stairs and walk down an extremely long corridor to get to the southbound orange line platform. You are sure to miss at least one train while walking down this long stretch. Normally i wouldnt care but you go deaf a the orange line is approaching.
When switching from orange to blue its not bad… you get off the orange, go up the stairs and youre at the blue outbound. Its just really weird going from a finished looking station to a bat cave.

OH HOLY GOD. Worst. Service. Evar.
Seriously. They’ve been trying to keep it on the DL, but MBTA actually stands for «Mediocre, Busy, & Tardy: Always.»
This is my work stop (for now). Getting here isn’t usually a problem, not counting when they stall with the doors wide open for no apparent reason. It’s when I’m wanting to go home that things get ugly & I feel like screaming.
Sometimes I think the train would arrive faster if I were pushing it. I’m not cocky, I’m just super badass like that.
Anyway. Tonight was by far the worst experience at State I’ve had so far. I left work about thirty minutes early. Well, I should have just stayed at work & actually gotten paid for those thirty minutes, because I wasted that part of my life standing around in State Station. Just a few facts before I go any further:
1.) Number of orange line trains to Forest Hills I saw pass by: 7
2.) Number of orange line trains to Oak Grove I saw pass by: 3
3.) The one day the weather finally seems nice & I decide to wear a lighter jacket, I get RAINED on. What the hell is that, really?
Now I’d like to mention that the 3 (that’s right: THREE!) Oak Grove trains I saw were so ASS F*CKING PACKED that I (along with quite a few others) could not squeeze on for anything. Ohhh, & here’s the «best» part: the people who DID manage to squeeze on? Half were people who had just walked up & cut a bunch of us (a**holes!), & half of them were men. That’s right… a bunch of MEN got on & left a bunch of us WOMEN waiting there. No wonder so many workaholics are single!
When I finally said «screw it» & pushed my way onto the fourth train (which was also pretty crowded), I noticed one more thing to piss me off: more than one example of skinny people taking up two seats. Wow. Care to explain that? Does your bony ass really need TWO seats? Get off my damn train & go eat a pack of hot dogs, kthx.
It’s not even worth it to complain. They’ve already got my money for this month anyway, I buy a monthly pass for crying out loud. I guess I’ve rambled enough about this dumpy station.
State Station is full of SUCKAGE. Negative eleventy billion stars. :(
