Quencher Tavern

A true old-​school Southie neighborhood hole-​in-​the-​wall.
Seems like every time I write a review these days, it’s to mourn the passing of some landmark old-​school place that’s been open since my grandfather’s era. «The Q» won’t rate on most Bostonians’ list of bygone institutions like the Hilltop or Anthony’s Pier Four, but if you grew up in South Boston’s City Point or spent much time hanging out there, you will mourn its passing. Seems the owners couldn’t pass up a chunk-​of-​a-​million-​dollars offer from the folks behind Somerville’s The Painted Burro, who plan to use the Quencher’s liquor license to open another upscale Mex joint in Downtown Crossing.
The room and the prices weren’t fancy. It was the kind of joint with Keno, a Sambuca and Cuervo chiller /​dispenser up front, and regulars who spent so much time there the stools were molded into the shapes of their behinds. The only food was the occasional Tupperware tray of complimentary cheese and crackers that got passed around. But it was the kind of friendly, ultra-​casual neighborhood place that served as a social hub for the surrounding blocks, much the way small-​town pubs in England and corner bars in Buffalo do. They’re not making them like the Quencher anymore; when these old joints close, they don’t get replaced. RIP.

Hearing rumors that this place is closing — boo! hiss!!! I don’t think I’ve been to this place and NOT gotten involved in a sing-​along of some sort. A true South Boston neighborhood dive bar — but fear not, they have always been welcoming of this Brighton girl. Thanks Quencher for some great (late) nights, some of which I cannot remember, free popcorn, and endless amount of laughs!

Treked here on Sat of the great blizzard of 2013! Had to get out of the house for some brews and this is where I ended up.
If you open the textbook on Southie dive bars you would see Quencher’s. Cash only, dimly lit and smelly bathrooms… Honestly this is a fun place to hang out, play the juke box, Keno and pound drinks. They do serve food but I only managed to get some crinkle cut fries to help the beers go down.
I also love the bartenders. The crotchety lady kept correcting me when I would order a Molson Canadian. I would order by just saying «I’ll have a Canadian», and she would respond with «You want a Molson!?!» She must have corrected me six times at least. The male bartender was styling with his shorts, ankle socks and golf shirt.
I will be back.

I walked in here for the first time in my 34 years a couple of weeks ago. I went to elementary school one block away, and I played on youth hockey teams sponsored by this place. It’s a typical old school tavern, cleaned up a little for the newer residents in the area.

This place is fabulous if you are looking for a friendly face behind the bar, cheap drinks and interesting people watching. They have elios pizza, keno and cheese puffs in styrafom bowls. I love it!!! Great Southie joint where you don’t feel like you’re going to get kicked out for not being a local. Cheryl is awesome!

My sister turned me on to Quenchers this summer and of course it was our first stop after picking me up from Logan. People there are awesome! Love the bartenders Jay, Cheryl and Kim! Jäger Bombs and Mcgillicuddy shots, YES!!!

New to the neighborhood and went in here on a Tuesday night. Cheap drinks and wicked nice bartender. He was making us laugh the whole time we were there. Played a few rounds of Keno and chatted with the others at the bar. Good time overall. Wouldn’t want to be in there when it is crowded though. Great hole in the wall.

The best diver bar ever! The bartenders are what make this place! Cheryl is hilarious she always gets the crowd going… the jukebox is great too and usually where you end up meeting new people… they make a mean chicken finger!

My favorite dive bar in Southie. The beers are cheap, people are funny especially the bartender Cheryl, she always has crazy props behind the bar to make you laugh. It’s never to crowded and they have a good jukebox!

Super small bar, great bartenders! Good place to go and fill the place up with a few friends.

Solid Southie bar… on the smaller side, and off the beaten path so it doesn’t get the really heavy traffic of the other, bigger places. This place has not been remodeled lately, but it is classic and clean inside non-​the-​less. One of my prefered watering holes in the area.
Beers are reasonably priced, jukebox and during the day the locals that hang out here are very friendly.
Definitely a worthwhile stop.

Great neighborhood bar — drop after work for a couple on your way home. Features include a jukebox, scratch ticket machine, Keno, and TV. Domestic beers at $ 2.75 a good deal.
