I am not certain why Haru only has 3.5 stars. I first tried this restaurant when restaurant week started and Haru was participating. From that point, I just went back because the food was so damn good. The sushi is beyond fresh. The ambiance is fresh, modern, contemporary, romantic. The restaurant size is relatively large, located in Copley. The location is great. Parking is by chance. The service has always been good, never a bad moment where I had to complain or anything. The seabass is too die for. Highly recommended!

Ambience and décor are nice. Food is below average. Semi soggy tempura. Over-cooked filet mignon. Average service.

Good food but expensive and very awful service. A waiter never helped us at the sushi bar. Sushi chef brought us food because she felt bad we were waiting so long. We had to ask a manager to get the check and when the waiter brought it back he didn’t even acknowledge us.

So, I’m a fan of this place when it’s my birthday month because you get to use a $ 20 birthday certificate(checkout their website for the certificate). With that certificate sushi all of sudden seems pretty affordable and that much more yummy. Overall, there’s a big emphasis on fusion rolls and dishes, and the seasoning is a bit bland. The fish is okay, and the rolls are a bit expensive. For sushi goers, I’d go straight for the a la carte nigiri and sashimi. It’s not the best place in Boston for its price, but if you’re around the area it’s not bad and there’s plenty of space inside.

Fish here is still great! The special rolls are tempting, but the simple raw cuts are the real star of the show. Try the ceviche, chirashi, or sashimi items. The rice here is also cooked and seasoned to perfection.

We stopped by this Back Bay Japanese restaurant for a Saturday lunch. The place was empty. The décor was typical, clean and dark. Our waiter was very nice. There was a good deal for lunch. Two of us ordered bento boxes and one of us ordered sushi rolls. The bento boxes were good. Everything was well prepared and above average. The service was attentive. Nice experience. I would go back.

OK experience – a little disappointing this time around. Our server wasn’t the best– didn’t remove wine glasses that were unused, take empty plates or refill our waters. Rolls are on the pricey side, so I only go for the $ 20 birthday now.

I brought a group of young adults here on a trip. One of them had never had sushi before, but was willing to give it a try. The server was kind. Not very excited about someone’s first sushi experience, but helpful, nonetheless. The best rolls were the Boston Uncommon and the Back Bay. We also sampled the duck spring roll with the plum sauce. Excellent. I would return here when I had a good amount of money that I wanted to spend on sushi, as the rolls are kind of pricey.

Service was friendly and snappy. Atmosphere is nice. The menu overall was fusion with some core traditional. Overall the seasoning was rather bland. Ceviche was not very vinegary and the miso on the cod was rather plain. The fish on the sushi was pretty good but the rice was not great but ok. The tempura was decent. The sake selection was pretty good but no shochu. There was a normal«sushi dinner» but no omakase. Overall, a «good» Japanese restaurant by Boston standards but average from a NYC.

I find Haru to be reliable and solid every time I go. Yes, it’s not Oishi, but I don’t want to pay $ 30 for a roll every time I want some reusable Sushi in a good atmosphere. Also: the Boston Uncommon roll. I heart you forever. And ever. Love, me.

When I selected Haru for lunch, my expectations were low. There are a few Haru’s in NYC and all are equally mediocre. I wanted a quick sushi lunch and knew, at the very least, I wouldn’t get sick. I was seated at the sushi bar and had: Miso Soup Spicy Tuna Roll Spicy Scallop Sashimi One of their specialty roll which was spicy The food was okay, basic and boring. The service was poor. The waiter would disappear for long periods of time even though the restaurant was almost empty. I ordered a cup of green tea but never got it. When I was ready to pay my bill, the waiter was no where to be found. I ended up flagging down one of the other waiters who looked more than a little annoyed to take my credit card. All and all an expensive, mediocre meal with lousy service.

All in all, Haru has pretty good sushi, though it’s quite pricey(…or Back Bay standard, you decide). I’ve been here for dinner and it’s okay — the hand rolls are average and the specialty rolls are pretty pricey(protip: sign up – and remember to redeem — the birthday certificate). More often, I order takeout(that can get expensed) — the agedashi tofu holds up really well during takeout orders though(it doesn’t get soggy!)

Haru used to be good but now it is pretty shoddy. Rolls are fine, nothing special at all. Appetizers and entrees are bleh. Service is bad(specifically, the take out service). They always forget to put wasabe and ginger with the rolls, even if you specifically ask them to. We only went because we received a gift certificate. The first time, the unagi was burnt and way overcooked. The shrimp termpura had tons of breading, very little shrimp. The sushi was not particularly fresh or remarkable. Then they kept sending us home without wasabe and ginger. We asked specifically the next time and didn’t receive any. Then called the manager. He barely acknowledged the issue, asked for our phone number, and said he would take care of it next time we came in. Next time, absolutely nothing happened — except the wasable and ginger was missing again. We will not be going back. Trust me, you are much better off ordering from Fugakyu in Brookline or going to Snappy Sushi on Newbury! So sad — I used to love going to Haru in NYC. The Boston location has lovely décor but that is about it.

Do not come here. Sushi is ok. Service is terrible. I was craving sushi and decided to try something different than my favorite local spot. I went in the afternoon, and my girlfriend and I were the only patrons. We were ravenous, and so counted every second that the service took. It took 10 minutes for service to get to us, and it took 35 minutes for us to get our rolls. The empty restaurant was still staffed with at least seven employees including managers who were teasing and playing with each other right in front of us. Simply unbelievable. Do not come here.

The reason for this last minute dinner get-together? My friend’s birthday certificate for $ 20 was expiring the next day. Our plan of action? Hit their Happy Hour for a selection of bites, then fill in the edges of our appetites with something from the regular menu that cost more than the birthday 20. We 3 ended up getting stuffed for $ 16 apiece: String Bean Tempura $ 4 Fish Tacos $ 7 times 2 Short Rib Buns $ 8 Lobster Gyoza $ 8 Salmon Avocado Roll $ 6.25 Eel Avocado Roll $ 7.50 Bluefin Crab Corn Fritter $ 8 The String Bean Tempura was lightly crisp, but a touch bland till I squeezed some lime over it and dipped it into the seasoning provided. The fish tacos were unexpectedly, yet not surprisingly(since Haru is a Japanese restaurant with raw fish offerings after all), raw. The short rib buns arrived in a count of two, and were pretty good though I greatly prefer the pork belly version found available else where. The Lobster Gyoza was a thin skin stuffed chock full of the meat. The fritters were small and crispy — okay, but not quite as satisfying as the gyoza. The rolls were as good as could be expected. So yes, get the Lobster Gyoza here.

Haru shines in its fun specials and happy hour deals. I came in for a Galentine’s Day dinner a few years back because they had some kind of special going on, and I had a great time although the food was not all that memorable. Flash forward to present day, where I was itching to use my $ 20OFFBIRTHDAYCERTIFICATE before it expired at the end of my birthmonth. Talk about an amazing perk! Anyway, I figured I’d get decent, not spectacular, food, but for $ 20 off it’d be worth it. Boy was I mistaken! I ordered the Sushi & Sashimi entrée and the fish was so so so fresh, flavorful and tender. Heaven in my mouth! $ 28 gets you 6 large pieces of sashimi(tuna, yellowtail & whitefish), 4 large pieces of sushi(salmon, tuna, red snapper, shrimp), a California roll and a GIANT eel/cucumber hand roll. I figured I wouldn’t be able to finish it all so I’d have leftovers, but instead I devoured the whole dish and thoroughly enjoyed each bite. I’m telling you, for whatever reason I really was not expecting the sushi to be all that great. And I was wrong, very wrong. So much so that I’m wondering if I should head there for lunch today to try out their bento boxes. If you have any misgivings about Haru, I recommend giving it another shot. You might just be pleasantly surprised. I know I will be back! And if nothing else, sign up for the birthday list so you can get $ 20 of free food, no strings attached!

Stopped by to use my $ 20 birthday certificate – what an awesome perk! We ordered 4 sushi rolls: Vegetable Tempura, California, Rock Shrimp Avocado, and Avocado. The total was $ 21.87 and I couldn’t have been happier to see a $ 1.87 bill after the birthday coupon! Overall, each of the rolls was very good. All were 6 pieces with the exception of the Veggie Tempura, which was 5. Between two small women, we easily ate all 4 rolls and probably could have eaten a 5th between us(but we resisted). I think the Rock Shrimp Tempura was my favorite as it had a slight sweetness to it that I couldn’t place, but really enjoyed. Definitely good sushi, but I’m not sure if it’s good enough to regularly make the trek into the city for. When we arrived at 5:50 for a 6PM reservation(on a Thursday) there was no one else in the place, so our food came very quickly. The atmosphere is upscale and aesthetically interesting, but the service(as other commenters have mentioned) leaves something to be desired, hence only 4⁄5. Our waiter was very prompt with everything, but had a total lack of warmth or personality. We’ll come back when we have more birthday coupons.

I’ve definitely had better sushi in Wisconsin, which I feel like shouldn’t be a thing. Service is good, space is cool, but I just was not impressed with the quality/taste of sushi at Haru. I started with the Lobster Gyoza which were not very flavorful at all. They were far too fishy, and pretty bland. Plus they were really hard to eat because of their size. For my main course, I ordered the Hime, which is a Maki entrée of the Spicy crab mango roll, Tuna avocado roll and Shrimp tempura roll. All for a(pretty steep) $ 22.25. They all tasted okay, but nothing I would come back for. The dipping sauce that came with the Shrimp tempura roll may have been my favorite part. It made the combo very delicious. The Spicy crab mango roll was too sweet, and the tuna avocado roll was good, but not great. This review would be 2 stars if you did not get as much sushi for your money. $ 22.25 still seems like a lot for 3 basic rolls, but the rolls are HUGE. If I was staying in the area again, I would not hesitate to come back however I am in no rush to try Haru again.

I’m a big fan of Haru. Ate there last night with a friend and it’s always a classic go-to sushi place of mine. The selection of sushi is pretty decent — and I love the Rock Shrimp Tempura appetizer. Not as tasty as mouth-watering as Douzo or Red Lantern, but reasonably priced and still yummy enough to keep me coming back. The atmosphere is great, and I love their seasonal cocktails… as well as happy hour!

Came here on a sat night and was told it would be a 5 min wait which ended up being a bit more than double that time but not a big deal. The items on the menu were a bit pricey but it’s a nice restaurant. I tried the fish taco trio, Boston uncommon roll and the Chilean sea bass entrée. The food was presented pretty nicely when it finally arrived since it took a while. The sea bass was really good but the Boston uncommon roll was a bit bland to me, I didn’t get any taste or flavor from the fish. The fish tacos had good amount of fish in them but the tacos are on the smaller side. They messed up on one of my friend’s order but was able to fix it right away.

It’s getting frustrating that every decent sushi spot in Boston requires a reservation. Haru is the perfect restaurant to grab last minute sushi, and Haru’s quality is decent and acceptable. The restaurant is located at a prime spot at the back of the Prudential Center. The décor is just like every other Haru but it is more spacious and comfortable than the other Harus. The hostesses are welcoming and you’re seated immediately regardless or early or late arrival. The portions are small — especially the sashimi — but the fish is pretty fresh. The edamame dumplings are yummy and are pretty unique. Nothing here is a standout, but everything is solid and satisfy my sushi cravings. By the way, the hot sake here is a must have. Sushi + sake = perfect meal!
