This nonprofit organization does a couple cool things: 1. Annual FREE film festival in Chinatown gateway park 2. Monthly classes on homebuying and how to get a mortgage 3. Quarterly classes on money management and homebuyer personal finance hacks/tips 4. Walking tours of Chinatown Details on the programs they offer: 1) Films at the Gate: the film festival shows vintage kung-fu and martial-arts movies, and the event was founded to bring back the experience of watching kung-fu movies in Chinatown after urban development closed down the old Chinatown theaters. Usually occurs in August or September each year. Check local newspaper and for details and each year’s lineup. You can bring take-out and sit with friends and enjoy free movies! Teens from their youth program sell popcorn and soda. I have gone for the past 3 years and met couples who met or got engaged there. So, you never know… 2) First Time Homebuyer Class: this is offered in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. Sign up via their website. The class is broken up into sessions on Realty, Credit, Mortgage Lending, Home Inspection, Home Insurance, and Real Estate Law. The teachers walk you through best practices for consumers, laws that protect you from housing or credit discrimination, and how to look for«affordable homeownership» lotteries(deed-restricted townhouses and condos for low– to moderate-income homebuyers). 3) ACDC has given classes in English and Chinese on home insulation/weatherization and how to find those money-saving programs, and how to file taxes as a homeowner vs. a renter. These topics vary seasonally so check their website for more details. 4) The Walking Tour is great for people interested in city planning or Boston history. They talk about the cultural and built history of Chinatown, how the Big Dig affected Chinatown, the murals and landmarks, trivia, guide to how to eat dim sum, etc. Plus, they are called ACDC. ACDC!!!
