Elfinam called to say my computer had been hacked and then had a high pressure sales pitch I received a call from Elfinam Technologies which left a message that my computer had been hacked. On September 16th I called back and was told that because I had previously used their service they were monitoring my computer and that it had been hacked. Foolishly I took the bait, and let an Elfinam Tech, Jim Carter or something like that, take remote control of my PC. They ran a scan, which showed all sorts of extraneous stuff on my computer and in red letters showed purported hacking from Russia. So I panicked and bought Elfinam’s product. When I wanted to back out they said they had recording of my commitment, so I chose and foolishly signed for a lower cost option, which came out to $ 278.98. My son, employed as an IT manager at a major company said there was no reason to do this and I should wipe my computer clean and change all my passwords. I did the first by reinstalling Windows 7 Pro, which wiped the rest of the disk clean, and then reinstalling my programs, such as MS Word, and changing my passwords. Efforts to reach Elfinam to resolve this have been unsuccessful even ‘though two toll free numbers exist for them; i.e. 1−888−202−2105 and 1−888−265−7816. The latter is the number I was given to call back for this work. The former isn’t answered and on the latter I just get a series of clicks rather than a ring. So it seems to me I’ve been dealing with what at best is a questionable organization and perhaps even criminal. The moral — don’t bite on any ‘phone calls offering to fix your computer. Stick with the software manufacturers. ie Microsoft, Apple etc.
