Heartland Health Care Center-Bloomfield Hills

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. A relative was placed in this facility after a stay in the hospital after breaking her ankle. She also has dementia. Never was happy with this place. I feel she was never given enough physical therapy. After a while she was placed on the 2^nd floor. I hope no one ever places a family member here. Once there I feel she did not get the care she needed and deserved. She fell and broke her arm when she was in the TV room. Where was any of the aids who should have been over seeing the people when they were in this area? She also fell
out of bed 3 times and fell out of her wheelchair at least 2 times if not more. So where was all the help that should have been watching these people? I can tell you standing around the desk talking and laughing. There were times my relative would call for help and wait forever for anyone to come. I would go try to get someone and be told her aid wasn’t available. God forbid another aid that was just standing around doing nothing would help! I also came up one evening and heard two of the aids talking about my relative and laughing about her, how unprofessional is that? Made quite a few complaints, but with nothing being resolved! Please don’t put any loved one in this facility!

Do not. I repeat-​DO NOT bring your loved one here. There are only three aspects of this facility that deserve commendation — the physical therapists, occupational therapists, and social services. Unfortunately, the other aspects of the facility make it far from worth it to come here for rehab.
Upon arrival, our family was given no general information on the facility, including facility rules and the intended plan for the coming weeks of my father’s stay. We were not given any information on who his doctor would be, who his nurse practitioner would be, or where anything was in the facility. It’s an extremely outdated building with a rank smell (SNFs should never have a smell).
What we quickly came to learn is that the nursing staff only makes things more complicated and frustrating for residents and families. It’s like pulling teeth to find out where things are in the building and getting information about where things are so that the families can at least get what patients need themselves. It took 30 minutes for an aide to bring water to my father. They do not change linens daily, even if there are stains on the sheets. They do not heed dietary restrictions. They are rude to families and amazingly lazy. Families should be paid instead of needing to pay because we essentially do the jobs of the nurses and aides when visiting.
And finally-we’ve seen several instances of blatant neglect. Nurses ignore room calls. They do not periodically survey the halls to find out if patients need assistance (I called one evening and was told that surveying the halls once an hour was too demanding for them). We’ve seen patients sitting outside of the nurse’s station calling for help with no one coming for half an hour. We attempted to take pictures of neglect taking place, only to be chased down by the head of nursing and told that they would call the police. Clearly they know that neglect happens every day here and do not want to be implicated for it.
We are transferring my father to the Oakland Heartland, which is considered to be a much better SNF and we are hopeful that it will live up to its good reviews.

i had surgery at Henry Ford and afterwards was sent to Heartland. i could have gone to other places but being in the hospital I was in no condition to do research. It was an awful place for me to be. I’m 57. Had abdominal surgery. All I did is stay in bed all day. Ate horrible food. Very minimal amount of therapy. I left weighing 103 pounds (I’m 5’8″) and could barely walk. They did more harm to my body than the bowel obstruction surgery did. The night staff were wretched. A number of young women who simply stood around the nurse’s station and talked and laughed all night… ignoring patients’ calls. I’m aghast at how much money they collect. Never send a loved one there regardless of age.

This place is horrible!!! My mother has been a resident since February 2014. This place is full of uncooperative staff!!! There are maybe two aides there that have compassion and are caring with the patients. I spend a lot of time there visiting because I don’t trust their care. I have made so many complaints and nothing gets resolved. The staff there is so lazy they are not concerned about the patients, the nurses are rude, I don’t know how they got a degree or even if they do have one, they can’t take a blood pressure properly and are not familiar with their patients have no clue what is their health issues are and they don’t care! They are just pill pushers and don’t do a very good job at that either. It takes an hour to get pain meds. Really…not acceptable. The residents sit around in soiled diapers for hours, they are left in bed until noon, and the call buttons for assistant are always on the floor so the patients can’t even reach it to call for assistance. If they don’t like their meal you have to pull hair to get something else for them to eat… they will let you go hungry! No one follows up with medical requests or test results… always having to call them back… this place is just exhausting for the patients and the family!!! HALF THERE BEDS ARE EMPTY IN THE PLACE AND THEY CAN’T MANAGE TO GIVE PROPER CARE… HOW SAD! DO NOT PLACE YOUR LOVED ONE IN THIS FACILITY. I have regretted this decision since the 2^nd day she was there. As soon as I can find another facility she is so out of there.
