Every time I make an appointment at Tivon I see Marcia(pronounced Mar-sha) and I’ve never been disappointed. I end up paying around $ 32 plus tip for a wash, cut and style. Several reviews have touched on the receptionists rudeness and she can be a little off putting but Marcia has always been polite and friendly. I have gone from very short hair to past my shoulders an I’ve received compliments on each style she’s done.

This place is not open when they say they are going to be open. I have stopped by two times to pick up hair products, both were times that the website and phone message said they would be open. They were closed both times, once on a Saturday for a wedding(note on the door) and once on a Monday at 5:45pm(hours are advertised as open until 6pm). Frustrating! Waste of time and gas.

Shouldn’t have come here. I came for a simple trimming of my ends because they were drying out, and I was overcharged for such a simple job. It was $ 32 for something I could have done myself :/I was really unhappy with the service at the front desk, but was too timid to just walk out because I felt it’d be rude(I had called in earlier to make an appointment). The receptionist didn’t look up once at me while I was at the counter! When I came in, she didn’t say hello or guide me on what I should do, so I was left looking confused at the counter. She didn’t acknowledge me until I said, «Uhm, hi?», and even then she didn’t look up. While still looking at her computer she asked what I was there for. I told her I had an appointment for the«express cut» and she told me to have a seat while pointing to a waiting area with some chairs(note that she still had not looked up from her computer at this point). The woman who was scheduled to cut my hair(she didn’t introduce herself) seemed a little nervous when she came out to get me. Long story short I was charged $ 32 for something I was told would be $ 25(the express cut), and the woman who cut it didn’t even style my hair for that extra $ 7. When I asked the receptionist why I was being charged extra her response was, «Blow-dry. $ 32.» Really? This place is very unprofessional and inexperienced. Having given 3 salons in Blacksburg a chance and being disappointed with all of them my conclusion is — don’t bet your luck here. Wait ’til you get back to your hometown and can be in the hands of people you know.

The stylist was very friendly and took the time to understand my hair and what I was looking for. I was pleased with the trim… but disappointed with the cleanliness of the salon. I couldn’t help but notice that pretty much every surface could use a good dusting or cleaning. If the stations aren’t wiped down, how long has it been since the brushes have had a good cleaning?!

HORRIBLE. DANGEROUS. That’s what I would use to describe this place’s skin services. There were no reviews on facials prior to me going there, so I was really nervous. I’m writing this review so no one has to go through what I did. When I first called the receptionist was a total jerk, so that started things off on a bad foot. I went in and the place looks like it’s pretty run down once you get past the front desk and head into the«relaxing facial area» which smelled like smoke. When I went into the room I saw a stain on the sheets. I should have known to turn around but I had one small bump on my face that I really wanted to get rid of. I laid down on the bed and she put my hair in this nasty smelling towel and twisted my neck. She then proceeded to put a scrub on my face which only covered a small area of my face. Then she put three masks on my face(wow never had that done at a spa… pretty sure after the second mask you’re skin isn’t going to absorb it or it will just undo what you just did… for instance she put a oil absorbing mask on then right after a hydrating mask that she later said was not oil free… awesome). The lights were on the whole time and she kept leaving to talk outside. She didn’t look at my face under the bright light, so pretty much I paid for something I could have done at home, but done much better. Then she did my eyebrows. She asked me if I wanted to do the tops of my eyebrows and I said no. She started to do it anyway and I thought maybe she was putting a special cream on to pluck the top… nope she pulled it off and off came the hair with the skin. I now have skin missing above my eyebrows. My derm said I got the same results I would have gotten if I got a bad chemical peel. Then she said looks great and sent me on my way. I looked in the mirror and was horrified. I came back and she said oh its not bad and put a water bottle on my face that I guess was supposed to be like ice. I will never in a million years go back to this place. To top things off they tried to argue with me about getting my money back. Now I not only have rainbow shaped scabs above my eyebrows, but my face is oily and peeling at the same time. Not to mention that bump is STILL there. Who knows what could have happened if she actually tried to pop it. Perhaps she doesn’t do that because she doesn’t know how and will just further scar your face.

I have been going to Tivon for years and have only been disappointed once, but that was because my regular hair stylist was not there. Teal knows exactly what to do with my hair, whereas most hairstylists don’t. Before leaving my appointment one day, I decided to get a manicure. The nail tech was super nice and my nails looked gorgeous after I left. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone I know in the area. I’m going to miss Teal and this place when I move. Everyone who works there is a total sweetheart.

They’re skilled and pleasant. I had a minor allergic reaction to the wax, so if you’ve got sensitive skin you might want to go elsewhere or ask them if they’ve got more than one kind of wax.

Good solid BS. We had the bridal party done here and they worked hard to make everyone look lovely for the wedding. Treated my 89YOMIL like a queen with manicure and pedicure and the pricing was great.(I am from NYC/NJ you can’t get a bad haircut for under $ 50 let alone a good one.)

Love this place, go there every time… I especially like Ashley and Amy. Both actually took the time to understand and examine my hair(which I have lots of, but it’s extremely fine, so I need lots of help with volume and layers). The haircuts grow out really well, and I love how my bangs come out — that’s always an issue. I haven’t tried coloring there, so I can’t really vouch for that, but I say give it a try if you need a cut while down at Virginia Tech. Also, they have free bang trims in between cuts, and 25% off all products for customers on the 15th of every month. It’s the place underneath Buffalo Wild Wings, and for $ 35 before tips it was definitely worth it!
