Not bad. My experiences with this place have always involved being with a large group of friends. Large interior with lots of seating that’s more than adequate if you like/don’t mind live country or classic rock cover bands playing in a smoky atmosphere. It is what it is… a honky-tonk/roadhouse hybrid.

My buddy and I wanted to shoot a few games of pool and he suggested The Back Nine. Friday night, 8:00, we had to pay a cover of five dollars each. We left at 9:30, two songs into the band’s set, and the guy at the door wouldn’t refund my cover charge which is ostensibly to pay for the band. I dont think that is right. If I was there while the band was there, I expect to pay a cover but I do not expect to pay a cover to be there before the band plays. Maybe if I had asked to speak to a manager about this it would have been refunded but I didnt have time for all of that. When my friend asked the bartender what beers he had on draft the bartender just pointed to the tap handles. When my friend said he coulndt read all of them, the bartender read them off like he was auditioning for an old school micromachines commercial. They had a fine beer selection on draft that they should have been proud of. My friend had Fat Tire and I had Good People Pale Ale. Both were priced at $ 4 each which I think is a fine price. The owner did switch the TV to the Braves game quickly when I requested it. For that, I thank you. I have had much better experiences at the former Fox and Hound and at Pub261. I havent been to The Back Nine in five years and it will probably be at least that long before I go back.

This is my go to wind down bar when I got off work bartending. George, Chris, and Bill are great guys and they work hard to make sure the experience at the bar is an enjoyable one. Definitely stop in to see what the night’s antics are as well as who is playing on stage. They are constantly working to bring top-notch groups to Lee Branch to perform and if they aren’t up to par then they are sent packing. This is a great bar to hang out with friends, dance, and/or shoot pool. They do allow smoking in the bar after a certain time so be aware of that, but I honestly think that is part of the bar culture and something that I miss when I am in larger cities. Whenever I am in the Birmingham area, I make sure to stop in, say hi to everyone, and have a few beers and shots.

I want to give it 3 stars because of the smoke BUT it’s nice to have a more open dance floor with darker lighting, large tables and a decent bathroom to use. AND now they have Razzmatazz band in the house. Wait staff is attentive but stick to beer or non mixed drink.
