Very bland and greasy food. Ordered a chicken and rice dish and there was a lot of small bones in the chicken pieces. Not a lot of taste to it. The appetizer was missing at delivery. Will not order from here again!

Went to this place for lunch buffet. The food was bland… Didn’t look very appealing either. I told the person at front desk about how food is not tasting the way it should. He replied«yes, we know. Our chef doesn’t uses all the spices». Well, Indian food is defined by all various spices. Was the 1st& last visit for me!

The only reason this place is open is because of the location. The food is terrible. The buffet consisted of old, stale food. The food was not warm and the Naan bread was terrible. This is by far the worst Indian foodI have EVER had. The worse part was that I left my spoon covered in my napkin and upon arriving to my table there was another used spoon set out for me. So basically the cleaner left me a used spoon. When I told him he apologized and said he thought that was mine. Not acceptable. If I didn’t know better I would’ve ended up using someone else’s spoon. Eww. There are better options in Birmingham for Indian food.

My coworkers and I eat here at LEAST once a week. I’d never had Indian food before this place because I’m quite the picky eater, but one time at this buffet and I was *hooked*. My favorite things are the chicken tikka masala, curry chicken, and the friend bakura bread. The tandoori chicken is also AMAZING and smoky and tender. They also do carry out, so don’t worry if you have a short lunch break and can’t stay to eat! The to-go plate they offer has the full buffet as an option, just stuff your foam container as full as you can with different things and it’s still the same $ 9.85 price. I’ve become quite familiar with the staff, and they’re all great. The waiter always has a smile on his face. I always feel welcome and I always leave completely stuffed and satisfied. This is definitely my go-to place for lunch – better than any other option on campus. And at $ 9.85 for lunch and ~15.00 for dinner, it’s more than affordable. If you work or are a student near the UAB area, you should DEFINITELY stop by! Give it at least one chance, and I guarantee you’ll become a regular – just like I did :) Seriously, if you haven’t tried this place, you just don’t know what you’re missing!!!

Sitar is a good Indian restaurant located conveniently to UAB and downtown. The atmosphere is good for groups as well as couples. There always seems to be sufficient seating in the evenings. The waiter service was quick and our waters were filled whenever needed, without having to request. I was with a large group this time and we ordered vegan dishes. They accommodated us well. The food arrived within a reasonable amount of time. Mostly standard dishes, and the spices were appropriate, although not extraordinary. We did find a good, somewhat sweet dish, called Vegetarian Patia, which I’ve never seen at other places: sour mangos with lots of vegetables. I would order it again. There were no vegan deserts available on the menu. I liked the restaurant and the dining experience. It is not remarkable food, but good and at a normal price for this sort of cuisine.

No spoon for my rice pudding. Sad to eat with the knife or the spoon given in the rice bowl. Beer menu whisked away to an empty table after my order. What about my 2nd beer? Asked for the menu to order another beer, and I pointed to the empty table, I think he was going to the kitchen to retrieve the big menu. Alas. The appetizer portions some were toasted, née deep fried to blackness. Hmm, if I saw this on the lunch buffet, it wouldn’t be touched. Chef doesn’t give a rats as. The naan in the combo plate, unseasoned, where’s my butter? Food rushed out, app, bam, soup, bam, then main. Little concern for the solo eater. I think this a lunch place, your mileage may vary.

I love this place! It’s close to UAB campus and hospital. So it’s perfect for students and employees for lunch and dinner. Their prices are average for an entrée during dinner $ 11 – 18. But the flavors are delicious. Right when you walk in there is a burst of spices that you smell, and you can’t help but get hungrier than you already were. Service is friendly. Don’t have anything bad to say about this place. It’s great.

Went to Sitar a few times and couldn’t wait to write a review. Lunch buffet is delicious and full of varieties. Weekends are good for buffet. I am with a Vegan group(not a vegan though) and we tried their dinner a couple times… Chana masala, Chana Palak and Vegetable biryani are spot on. My friends enjoyed it and we keep coming back every month to make a visit. I have tried their chicken tikka masala… Tandoori chicken and Chicken Biryani… All delicious and gave me a taste of Indian food… My palates are craving Sitar food often… and i would definitely recommend it to anyone else. The level of spice is good and not too hot… that’s how i like it.

This place is awesome. Portions are the best I’ve seen in Birmingham in the indian restaurants I have tried. The food is always consistent and delicious. When I go to eat Indian I am not looking for atmosphere or how long it takes to pay, and I have never had an issue with the service here as I have read in other reviews about all 3 of those points. I always enjoy a good meal and the food is what sells me on this place. This place is on point for me and I will always return with a smile, happy tummy and leftovers!

Plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. Good service. Not much of an atmosphere seems more like a takeout/lunch spot. You can customize your spice level from no-Extra hot. The extra hot is very spicy like sweat dripping from your forehead spicy.

I understand you don’t have to be Indian to sell Indian food. But it’s not even Indian food. What’s wrong with calling it Nepali food because that’s what it is. I guess there aren’t enough ethnic people in Birmingham to counter the authentic Indian food claim. Just my two cents.

I ate here when I was visiting Birmingham a couple weeks ago. The reason for my visit was because we have a Sitar restaurant here in Houston. The food was absolutely mind-blowing and incredibly authentic. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Mughlai, Keema Matar and Raita. First of all the Chicken Tikka Mughlai was absolutely amazing. The way those mushrooms tasted in the sauce was divine… It just put me in slow motion because I couldn’t savor it long enough. The Keema Matar was totally different than I expected(the dish I get at the other Sitar is prepared very differently) and, although I liked the Chicken Tikka Mughlai better, it was stilled amazing. The lamb was mild but the spices didn’t overpower it. Absolutely perfection. Next time I’m in Birmingham I’ll definitely be visiting again.

I checked out the lunch buffet, and I enjoyed it. If you like Indian, come try it. If you’ve never had it before, maybe you should check out another place first, for it was good but not the best Indian in Birmingham. Good location, but they could use a little face lift, outside and inside, to attract more business. I’d go back, but only if I couldn’t make it to Taj.

Best Indian Food in Birmingham I recommend the lunch buffet because you can try a lot of different things and you can see what you want instead of just ordering off of the description. Also, this place is super vegetarian friendly! Friendly service and a clean restaurant make this a must visit. It can get a bit crowded around lunch due to the UAB crowd, but I’ve never gone and not been able to find a table straight away.

Being Indian I am very critical when I go to Indian restaurants. The food was awesome. The service could have been better but the food makes up for that.

This place is great! I started going to the Sitar in Tuscaloosa back in college and was excited to see a location in Birmingham. The chicken tikka masala is a staple for me, pair it with the garlic naan and you’ll be set for a wonderful meal. The garlic naan is coated with either butter or gee, just makes my mouth water thinking about it. The chicken tikka masala has a creamy tomato flavor that I just can’t get enough of. When ordering most dishes they give you the option on how spicy you want your dish.(Ex. Mild, Medium, Hot or Indian Hot.) The Indian hot is great, but be cautious if you’re not use to extreme spice. Overall, I really enjoy Sitar and have recommended it to many people.

Great lunch buffet. I really liked that they had the vegetarian and meat dishes separated and labelled. Nice staff and good downtown location.

Really great Indian good in the US is sometimes hard to find. Having read the reviews and seen the issues with the lunch buffet, I chose instead to hit up their dinner hour to satisfy my «curry» craving. After taking a sip from my Kingfisher(the glass had a chip, so they got me a fresh one) and nibbling on a poppadom, I opted to order the«House Specialty» which is a few different dishes under one. Starting with soup(which was extremely hot!) that had a cheesy veggie sort of flavor, my mains all arrived. A lamb curry, a veggie of some sort, a leg and thigh tandoori, naan bread and a massive pile of rice. I had asked for medium(a step more spicy than mild) and it was tasty enough. I managed to polish off all of the lamb and the sauce, half of the naan bread and about a quarter of the rice before I was truly stuffed. It was good, but not great. Two big problems… First was that the payment portion of the transaction took a long while. The very nice lady running the register was also responsible for taking phone orders and she had to run back to the kitchen twice to get stuff straight. Paying my bill took ten minutes of waiting. Second was that I could listen to a very loud discussion /argument going on in the kitchen. In Hindi.(Well, it might not have been Hindi. They speak a dozen languages in India, none of which I understand at all.) Distracting and annoying. Street parking is easy. It’s free after 6:00PM.
