*LOVE* this place :-D Open 24/7, food, coffee and FREEWI-FI! A full-time student’s dream come true. I agree with Henry that parking is the only bummer but that’s something you have to deal with in any downtown area. Hint Hint to the owners, open one up in Auburn Hills for Oakland University/Oakland Community College students — you’ll make a killing!

A little snobbier than I like my coffee places to be, but hey, it’s in Birmingham… don’t go to Rome and expect everyone to speak English. I can deal with that part, but here more than any place else, I’ve seen people having very audible conversations– sometimes personal and completely inappropriate– as natural as if they were in their own living room. I’m sorry, did I miss the part where simply having a cell phone or blue tooth headset meant you were automatically important? I thought that was done with 15 years ago. No one wants you pacing up and down the aisle while on the phone like your some business tycoon, nor do they want to hear about your ex girlfriends. Get a clue, get some class, and either take the phone conversation outside or speak a discrete volume. Yeah, I know, that’s not exactly keeping with an actual review of Java Hutt, but it can ruin your experience there in a hurry. D-bags and people looking for attention litter this place. My apologies for the normal patrons for having to endure this. I’ve had some interesting coffees here, and the place is pretty cute inside. Go there around final exams and you won’t get a seat until 3am. And as always, if you’re actually going there to work, be safe and bring a set of head phones. The place isn’t what I would call small, but it’s closed quarters all around. Parking can be a pain in the ass. The 24 hour thing is a big bonus if you want to get some work done, but fear going home to work might lead to further distractions. I’ve personally never eaten there, but some their little appetizers coming out looked tasty. I will probably give them a shot the next time I go back.

I love the Java Hut. It reminds me of the days when I would meet friends here in high school.

Ahh Javahut how I love you for being open 24⁄7(seriously) and free wifi. its also fun to do work, meet up with old friends, and listen in on all the random people who come in and give their theories on life. Tons of outlets and lighting is good. You can choose what kinda table you want to be at and just do your thing. It was open on Xmas day!!! I was shocked and the people working there are really nice even if its a holiday at 3am. The spinach dip is good, drinks a bit above normal, salsa not so fresh, soup is okay, etc. I don’t even need the food. the 24⁄7 sells this place to me.

I love Java Hutt. I’d forgotten how much I loved it since I was gone. I came today for a Soy Chai with a friend, and I’m always pleased by the atmosphere, the home style cups, the free wi-fi, the power outlets, the lighting, and really everything about it. I’ll be back every time I’m home, and I’m sad I don’t still live in the area.

Good ol’ Java Hutt, it’s got a checkered history and equally spotty record of ownership. It’s changed forms so many times over the last ten years, but — aside from its brief stint as a coffee shop-slash-cell phone store(no, seriously) — the formula hasn’t changed. It’s the only 24 hour coffee place in town. That scores points. It’s got free wi-fi. That scores points. It doesn’t use stupid names or forced Italian to denote cup sizes. That scores points. The prices are pretty decent. That, also, scores points. There’s no parking, except for the city-provided street parking which is pricy and almost always full, though the meters do shut down at night, and in the summertime the parking garage one block west is great because the first two hours are free, and it’s a pleasant walk. And the place is always packed with kids — high school kids, college kids, everyone uses it as a hangout. Partly because it’s just a good place to go, partly because it’s one of the only open places in town past 9pm. You’ll get a rather eclectic cast of characters there in the small hours. On the whole though, if you’re in the area, it’s not a bad place to meet up with folks or kill some time.

Heyo! I went here to meet up with fellow Unilocaler Dave B. I frequent this place often. It’s a nice midway point between me and some other people I cowork with. This place is crowded at all hours with students studying. It’s a 24-hour joint. Here are some things to get you by… Tip #1: Don’t bring any outside food or drink under any circumstances. You will get your hand slapped. Tip #2: Park in the parking garage and get the first 2 hours free. After that, it’s about a dollar an hour. There is no private parking. Tip #3: They have a not-so-known-about sandwich selection that’s delicious. Order one. I dock it a star for too many students and no free parking. When you go there, say hi to James when you’re there. He’s been there since the beginning.

This Java Hutt is okay, but I’ve been spoiled by Ferndale. Dont get me wrong, the staff is super, foods good, everything on the business end is fine. The customers in the place is what kills this location. You got high school kids that use this as a major gathering spot. Definitely college students come into the place. Its just that the high school kids are brats and the older folks(21+) are just snobby. I do have a complaint about their front door. When its cold and someone opens the door to the place, the wind rushes in somethin’ fierce. Management needs to do something about that.

I think I live here. After 7pm on any day it will be packed to the brim with students. The free wireless and plenty of outlets is a huge perk to this place. It tapers off at around midnight. It can get ridiculously loud. If you want to pick up a future doctor or lawyer this is the place to go(though there are way more medical texts out than law stuff). Oh… and it’s now 24 hours. Let me explain something to you non-natives out there. There are 4 major colleges/universities in the Detroit Metro area, with a total student population exceeding 75,000… and there is ONE24HOURCOFFEEJOINT. Gah! How does that even happen??? The baristas don’t recommend anything out of the case other than the brownies. And the mochas are ridiculously good. The tea selection is scant, though. I also don’t like that they use styrofoam cups and don’t have a recycling option(though they post why they use these cups over paper — better for the environment — I am not convinced, especially when I see a garbage can filled with styrofoam). I always try to ask for a «here» cup, but it’s like they aren’t even listening.

Java Hutt is back, after a brief incarnation as Mobile Lounge. It is no longer 24 hours during the week, but is open all night during the weekend. According to my inside source it might become a 24 hour place again in the near future, which would be wonderful. Interesting baristas, ok coffee drinks, this places is really about the atmosphere.

Wow, this place is 24 hours! Too bad I didn’t discover it when I was doing the bulk of my studying when I lived in the metro Detroit area. I didn’t stay up very late studying/reading my last few years there because my day started so horribly early in the morning. Looks like it’s a decent place to study though, with lots of other student types. So, I can’t say I did much studying there, but did hang out there a few times. There’s couches & coffee tables set up by the counter, then towards the back, tables & chairs that are a little easier to study at, if that’s the reason you’re there. It’s near the movie theater, so it’s convenient for hanging out after you see a movie. Oh yeah, it’s a very local«chain», with the other location being in Ferndale, which I may have set foot in once. Didn’t frequent the Ferndale location because one of my good friends had something against that place, so we never hung out there. Oh yeah, & this is all based on my experiences there over a year ago, so hopefully it hasn’t changed too much. Located on Old Woodward south of Maple/15 Mile in downtown Birmingham. There’s street parking or garages(with very narrow spaces) nearby.

what can I say about java hutt, I love that it is open 24 hours, and not too far away from where my parents live. I love that I can go there to catch up with an old friend no matter what time it is. I love that it can get crowded late at night. And, I love the quirky people that you see there. This is a good place. It started my love for coffee houses.

When I was homesick for Oakland(CA) and its plethora of cozy coffeehouse alternatives to mega-Starbucks, I was thankful there is a Java Hutt in Birmingham. I went a couple late weeknights and the place was packed with a diverse college-aged crowd. The espresso drinks were delish and ambience chill. My only complaint is the lack of electrical outlets, it’s definitely not laptop friendly but free wi-fi is a definite plus.
