Color me not impressed. Here for the first time and the food is less than desirable. Got a veggie plate to suffice my lunch hunger, and half the food is going to be left on the plate. Granted, it was affordable, it’s still not worth not being pleased with what I am indeed paying for.

I hate to put down a local business in Bluff Park but the staff is so grumpy. Seriously I can’t handle it. An all new front of house staff and maybe a few changes to the menu would really make this place. That said the fried chicken and fried catfish are both great. The sides and deserts are both good too. It’s a 4 star place but I had to drop them down to three for how rude the front of house staff is. It’s the little things that are gonna be the reason I won’t be back. Really though I want this place to succeed. They just need to try a little harder.

For the price, cafeteria style dinner just doesn’t get much better. It’s southern cooking, with as much grease as anyone wants (country fried steak, tilapia, killer m&c). You can also get a more modestly fatty meal (beef stew, black eyed peas, turnip greens). No frills, no problems, and the setting is beautiful, up on a high ridge in the Alabama hills.

Consistently excellent food, in a deliciously updated Southern style. Fried chicken is the best I’ve had in Birmingham. Exceptional fried catfish. Rich, tasty baked ham. Meats rotate daily. And the veggies are to die for: black-eyed peas (happily not overcooked!), turnip greens, Mac n cheese, etc., prepared skillfully by a young chef whose grandma taught him how to do it right. Limited seating, always comfortably filled. Great find!

In need of a quick meal, I ran by the diner this evening. Not only did I have a «to go» dinner in minutes, but it was healthy and delicious. While I don’t always give the diner 5 stars, the baked fish was just that good tonight. Well done, diner.
