cheap and good eating, not a local but we make a point to stop by here when we travel through the area.

I am still not sure what a spiedie is even after sampling it but it just tasted like really salty meat. We had the ribs and they were pretty good. The fries were also decent. The ‘dinner roll’ that came with the rib plate was really just a hot dog bun. It was even sliced. So that was a little strange. Overall it was an ok place but I don’t understand the high rating it has received. If you are thinking of having the spiedie and have never had it before, ask for a sample.

On the way back driving from Canada to NYC we came upon this place off of the I-81 South. This is not fancy place but they deliver great marinated cubed chicken or pork. We had the chicken spiedie with Chipotle sauce. The 6 inch sub is packed. Onion rings and French fries were crispy and not greasy. Staff is very friendly and the cost for 2 adults with a kid under $ 20. Will stop again on our next trip.

I love, love, love their food! I havent had a bad meal yet and ive been going here for years. The staff is friendly, the food is great and they are fast so an hr lunch is plenty of time to grab one of their many speidie sandwich selections! My only complaint is the size of the restaurant, because they are so good it is often very crowded with minimal seats available, so plan on eating in your car on a cold or rainy day. There is additional seating outside which is perfect for warmer weather though. Bottom line the food is so good i really dont care about the seating or in this case the lack there of. My family and I get their speidies at least once a week if not in store we get their marinated speidies to go. My youngest boy loves their rack of ribs and they are quite tasty but in truth the speidies are the best around and i cant seem to order away from them. I would definately recommend this restaurant as a pit stop and if you havent tried them you are missing out. But beware the speidies are highly addictive!

Love the taste of these spiedies. Not as dry as the other big name in town. But not too wet either. My only issue is that waiting to pick up your order — it’s just so cramped & the kids taking your order can be less than sharp.

I love the Spiedie and Rib Pit, their ribs are to die for. I craved their ribs when I was pregnant so I ate their often, I highly recommend this restaurant. My husband loves the chicken Spiedie subs. They are also reasonably priced!

Gotta say. I’ve been impressed by the local flair and the slang. Now I know what a Spiedie is. :-) Seriously though we’ve stopped by based on high reviews on Unilocal and as usual it’s right on the money. The Spiedies were great. Chicken fresh and tasty and not overdone as most places serving chicken kabobs or the like. I can’t give it 5 stars though since the burger my son got initially was in his words burnt but they replaced it with the one he thought was great so he wasn’t disappointed. Overall a great roadside place.

I’ve lived in Binghamton my entire life and had never been here, I don’t know why! I had the chicken spiedie sandwich that had onions, peppers and provolone cheese. It was amazing! I was hesitant on ordering spiedies from a restaurant because I’ve had bad experiences in the past, but they were super tender and flavorful. The other half of my sandwich was even good cold.

Followed everyone’s advice and stopped here on the way through Binghamton. The Greek chicken spiedie on pita was great! Spiedie meat is a treat! Fries are nice and crisp, onion rings are good but the order was small. Overall a great place to stop!

So, driving through the middle of New York, we decided to stop in Binghamton. What in the world could we eat in this city– a city where I can’t even pronounce or say the name? And to that, I turned to Unilocal(where would I be without you!!!). And thus, it directed us to Spiedie & Rib Pit. Now, as I’ve learned, a spiedie is a Binghamton speciality. I’ve been pronouncing it «speedy” — who knows if that’s correct, but whatever, it’s fun. We stopped by here– and it’s literally a hole in the wall. It reminds me of a truck stop/convenience store. It’s a simple set-up– go up to the counter, order, they call your order and then you find a seat to chow down. The place was packed when we went– families, truckers, old people, young people– all these people who want a spiedie. I got the chipotle chicken spiedie– it came out on a grilled thick pita, with juicy pieces of chicken. It was piping hot, slightly oily, and delicious. However, a little spicy for me– my mouth was kind of on fire afterwards(I didn’t think it would be that spicy!). He got the spiedissimo– also a thick grilled pita with juicy chicken provolone cheese, peppers, and onions– his was delicious as well. We highly enjoyed our spiedies and it was a great dinner(cheap too!). I see why this place is always packed. When in Binghamton, do as Binghamton people do– and get yourself a spiedie!

Perhaps had it not been for all the glowing reviews, I would have walked in here with no preconceptions and walked out with a four star experience. We tried the Greek chicken spiedie. I tried the pork spiedie. We had some fries. But nothing here wowed me. And I typically give extra points for regional foodstuffs you can’t get in other places. The roll was especially underwhelming. But when the pork was eaten without the roll it was almost impossibly salty to get down. Perhaps the S&R Pit was having an off day. It’s a mighty convenient stop for getting a quick meal when heading from upstate down to Scranton, PA. So I’m hoping to get another chance to pop in here. However it may be a tough sell for the rest of the family.

Great find on a road trip back from Rochester to NYC. It’s right off the highway which makes it the perfect«pit» stop for the 6 hour drive. I saw the good reviews on Unilocal and decided it would be a better place to stop than the usual go to’s in the area. Let me start by saying the photos on Unilocal don’t make it look as appealing as it is. The flavor well makes up for the presentation. From the moment you pull into the parking lot smoke is wafting from the building and you can smell the amazing pit smell! That alone would have drawn me in even if I hadn’t been planning a stop. The flavor on the chicken is insane! We both got the chipotle chicken spiedies and they didn’t disappoint. There was hot sauce on the table — Not needed! The spiedie was spicy yet still extremely flavorful. You can taste all the extra flavors of the pit in every bite. Please stop here! Even if it’s out of the way a stop is well worth it!

AWESOME pit stop on I-81 for us. We will be coming here for years to come! The food is fantastic and it gives you a great taste of the Southern Tier’s specialty: Spiedies! Spiedies, for those of you who don’t know, are delicious small pieces of marinated chicken or pork that are put into a sandwich — preferably on char-grilled pitas(as they are served at this restaurant). The Spiedie is a Southern Tier/Binghamton specialty and this place aces them. Our favorite was the caprese chicken spiedie on a pita. The caprese are super flavorful with delicious spiedie marinade, bruschetta topping, and awesome pesto sauce. The Buffalo chicken and the blue cheese spiedies were also good. Can’t wait to try more next time we visit! Unilocal Check In at this place also offers you a really yummy cookie(we got the sugar cookie with sprinkles and highly recommend it). Their ribs are also great sounding, but unfortunately they were sold out on our first visit. My husband is psyched to check them out next time. =) We are fortunate(or unfortunate?) enough to travel on I-81 pretty regularly as we go between Roc & family/friends in NYC(or almost anywhere else that’s both south and on the eastern seaboard). We are always looking for a good place to stop that isn’t a chain. This place is great & we’ll be stopping here for years to come!!!

My heart is breaking knowing that I’ll probably never swing by this place ever again. We were headed back from Canada and this place was right off the highway. If I lived even remotely close, I would make it a point to come here frequently. Spiedies(chicken or pork) are pretty much shish kabobs/tikkas. You can get them in a roll, pita, or salad. We ordered the chicken spiedies — in a roll and in a salad. Everything was so delicious!!! The chicken was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The staff here was so friendly. The wonderful woman taking our order explained the menu to us and gave us samples of the chicken, even though there was a long lunch time line. Our food came out in under 5 minutes… and then devoured in under 5 minutes. If you’re in the area make sure you stop and eat here!!!

Some other reviews list the Greek spiede as the holy grail of sandwich here. I just can’t seem to get past the traditional chicken spiede the minute I walk thru the door the smell of the chicken cooking on the open flame grill. So freaking good!

Traveling to Norfolk from Syracuse and it’s lunch time. I pull off the Interstate to Unilocal search. Spiedes & Rib Pit. Whaaa? Behind the counter, in a mobbed little spot, the friendliest woman in New York asked if it’s my first time.” Yes”… She explains spiede and brings me samples! Think kabob. Superb. They sell tubs of spiede meat, marinade and spice blend, some of which is going home.

Stopped at this hidden gem on a road trip from Virginia up to Albany, New York. My dad went to SUNY-Oneonta, so when on 88 we will usually stop at Brook’s BBQ, but lunchtime cravings hit when we were passing through Binghamton and Spiedie’s certainly satisfied! Recommended by a family friend who is a cop, which I find normally is a solid indicator of easy going quality. Dad enjoyed his Greek spiedie and I got the Chipotle, which really wasn’t all that spicy, but I would still order it again on a heartbeat. The chicken was moist and the pita was grilled/charred just right with seasoning. I am sure the 12″ sub versions are perfectly good too, but that pita really worked. If you go at noon during the week you will stand in line with all the locals, but not for too long. Some covered seating outside was great on a summer day. Easy stop off the highway and limited seating and space inside, this is a good option for takeout. If you like suggestions from the show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, this place is for you!

In my opinion, people that take Methamphetamines are a bit… well… a bit Spiedie. Don’t you think so? People who take them don’t pump gasoline, they use Methanol. They like to beat up random innocent people even though it’s unmethical. They often get broken ribs in these fights but they don’t feel a thing because of the LSD. They toss their leftover pills and their bits of broken ribs in the«Spiedie & Rib Pit.» Which is how this rather gruesome eatery got its convoluted name. What to get: Greek Spiedie In Pita, extra Greek dressing. What else: Laid. Welcome to Binghamton. There is no eatery that is more Binghamton than this one. There is no eatery that is even comparably Binghamton, not even close, not even in the same stratosphere of Binghamtonishness than this one. But unlike many other local legends, it’s actually really, really amazing. At first, I thought it wasn’t. Another overrated local«bastion». Achieving infamy for quirky mediocrity. That’s because I came here on the morning of my first ever Binghamton Concert and ordered a «regular spiedie» which was Chicken on bread, bland, dry, tasteless, pure boredom. It did nothing for me except dry me out in advance of what would be a phenomenal and memorable concert with over 100 in attendance, which for me is special, especially in a town I’ve never visited before. But the next time I drove through Binghamton(and I often do, since it’s right on my favourite path to New York City from my current residence in Buffalo), I gave it another try with a friend, and we went for the«Greek Spiedie», and suddenly everything became clear. The Greek Spiedie is served in an overdone, charred Gyro-pita, which tastes similar to the pita at Mike & Tony’s in Pittsburgh. It’s heaven in bread format. The Spiedie itself is off-the-charts-delicious. Combining the succulent juicy well-marinaded Greek chicken with feta and salad, and then all drizzled in delicious, oily, greasy, hypersalty, Greek dressing that absolutely makes the sandwich. Well, no, the bread makes the sandwich, but the dressing makes it that much better. It’s hard to imagine that the chicken that goes into this pita is the same chicken that was in the standard Spiedie. So I cannot recommend more emphatically that you skip the regular Spiedie and all the other kinds of Spiedie, and get the Greek Spiedie. Basically they are all just Chicken Kebabs, white-people-style, and not particularly great(because they’re adorned with white people things like melted cheese and mushrooms), except for the Greek Spiedie which is so good, it belongs right up there on the top list of the best Greek food and the best Chicken Kebabs in the country. It’s one of the best I’ve had. Oh and don’t get me wrong with the«white people things» reference. It’s not meant to insult you, I apologize if it does. I mean, I’m white, or rather, my mother’s family is and I sort of am. And I love white people food, probably more than a lot of people do. But in some cases, something exotic and amazing(the Greek Spiedie) is very bland when prepared other ways(in my humble opinion), such as typically American ways, with Diner influence, Sub Shop influence, or Italian American influence. So that’s basically what I mean, but why say all that when you can just say«white people things» and offend everyone? So please try the Greek Chicken Spiedie. One thing though: It’s so salty(which I like, but yeah), that it will leave you literally dehydrated. So don’t get any bright ideas and eat one before a concert! Especially not a Greek Spiedie before singing. I found out the hard way, and if you’d like to find out the hard way, I’ll give you my number later and I can promise it will be the very very hard way. The Spiedie. The best thing to eat in Binghamton. One of the best things to eat in NY State. One of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten. Everyone I’ve taken here to try it, fell in love with it. Come here. Get a Greek Spiedie. Then send me a postcard thanking me. Over and out. By the way, I don’t like playing cards that are not red and not clubs. They’re a little«Spady» for me. If you have 5 alphabetized cats, A through E, and you’ve spayed the first four, please make sure you’ve «Spayed E» before you leave. And don’t swallow too much«E» while you’re swallowing LSD, because then, like my friend did, you’ll soon find you’ve «Spewed E.» He had consumed so much of it that he not only spewed it, he «Peed E.» Ew. He was pretty ecstatic about it though.

I went with a Greek Spiedie in a pita combo(fries and a drink). No it’s not a person, it’s a meal! De-liscious. Tasty chicken, real crumbled feta. Fries were forgettable. My only real complaint is they can do a better job keeping the ketchup and hot sauce bottles clean. They do accept credit cards. Friendly people, small place, fine flavor.

Driving straight through from Philadelphia to Niagara Falls, I Unilocaled for food along the highway with little luck. My brother who had attended college in Syracuse told me the highway was a bit of a wasteland, but he did remember Spiedies. WOW! Finger-licking good sandwiches for a great price and a unique food experience. We couldn’t have been more pleased with the place. Nice staff too and you could see everything being whipped up fresh in front of you. Seemed like they had a lot of variety and some great homemade type things in their fridge like side salads and bread puddings — but we had to eat and run. We were actually a bit disappointed that our return trip didn’t time right for us to stop in again!
