One thing that I have noticed is that almost every vintage audio repairman has an air of snobbishness about them but, this guy pairs it with dickishness for a winning combo.
I used his needle/​cartridge request form, which is «designed to help you provide us with all the information necessary to find the exact replacement needle for you. Please fill in all information carefully, more is better! We will Email you back with pricing and availability shortly after receiving your request.»
I provided him my model info, and wrote him a straightforward email with some simple questions and a willingness to give him money and In the additional information section, I asked him if he also sold replacement idler wheels and what was the best cleaner to use on the plastic case so as not to harm the finish. and he replied back with a condescending email telling me he can’t sell or release specialized service information, data and replacement or appearance parts and then suggested that I «revisit» the Internet, possibly searching Google and/​or eBay, or maybe craigslist for more information.
WTF? A request to buy a replacement needle/​cartridge (which he offers for sale), a replacement idler wheel and a question about what cleaner I should use, is specialized service information? Or was it wrong of me to ask him to sell me parts that he offered for sale?
Clearly this curmudgeon is stuck in the same era as the equipment he repairs because he doesn’t realize that he’s (at the time) the number one ranked search result on Google when I typed in record player parts and repair and service. I’m not even sure he does any of those things because he clearly doesn’t want to sell parts or even really provide a service.
Maybe I missed something in my undergrad business classes or in years of management in both sales and service departments. Maybe the infinitesimally small niche market of vintage record player restoration is doing so well in this economy that he can afford to rudely turn away business. I don’t know the answers to those questions but, I do know that you should heed both his advice and mine and «revisit the internet» to find another place to give your business to.
